In its natural habitat, in the heart of the Andean rainforests of Peru, this giant Anthurium grows under the canopy, filtering the light through the foliage of the tall trees. It is therefore perfectly adapted to diffuse and constant light, never subjected to intense direct rays that would irreparably burn its large, velvety leaves.

In summer, a sheer curtain placed in front of a south- or west-facing window is enough to create ideal conditions. In winter, move the plant slightly closer to the light source to compensate for the natural decrease in sunlight, especially in apartments with poorly lit rooms.

Anthurium Regale is toxic to cats, dogs and young children, due to the presence of calcium oxalate in all its plant parts.

Like all members of the Araceae family, Anthurium Regale contains microscopic, needle-like calcium oxalate crystals called raphides. These crystals, present in the leaves, stems, and sap, cause immediate mechanical irritation upon contact with mucous membranes.

If ingested, the most common symptoms are severe oral irritation, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, nausea, and, in more serious cases, swelling of the lips or tongue. These symptoms are usually short-lived but should be taken seriously, especially in young children or small animals.

What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?

Place the Anthurium Regale out of reach of children and pets, either on a piece of furniture or in a room with limited access. Wash your hands after handling the plant, especially when repotting or pruning damaged leaves.

The leaves of the Anthurium Regale most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

• If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem usually stems from excess water causing the beginning of root rot.
• If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant often lacks light or fertilizer.
• If the yellowing is accompanied by small light spots, a dull appearance or fine webbing, it may be a mite infestation, common indoors, especially in dry atmospheres.

Repotting is necessary when:

1. Carefully remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary to loosen the root ball without pulling on the stems.
2. Gently loosen the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them. There's no need to rinse systematically: the main goal is to give them more space.
3. Place a layer of substrate at the bottom of the pot, position the plant upright, then fill with substrate without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water the plant to help the substrate settle around the roots and eliminate any air pockets. However, ensure that excess water can drain freely.Repotting is always a source of stress for the plant. Repotting every two years is sufficient to ensure healthy and balanced growth.

Anthurium Regale should be fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

During autumn and winter, from November to February, significantly reduce or stop fertilizing. This is a period of dormancy during which the plant produces few or no new leaves.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize Anthurium Regale in a dry substrate: this could burn its epiphytic roots, which are particularly sensitive to high salt concentrations.Water normally first, then apply diluted fertilizer 2 to 3 days later, when the soil is slightly moist. Water Anthurium Regale when the substrate has dried out completely, approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 12 to 18 days in winter. Use room temperature water.

How do I know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger into the substrate to a depth of 2 to 3 cm. If the substrate is dry, it's time to water. If it's still damp, wait a few more days.

As an epiphyte native to the Andean forests, Anthurium Regale tolerates periods of slight drought between waterings, but it is very sensitive to excessive waterlogging around its roots. Furthermore, it is particularly susceptible to the lime in tap water, which can cause whitish spots on its large, velvety leaves and a gradual yellowing of the leaf edges. Use filtered water or water that has been left to stand overnight before watering.

Important advice:When in doubt, it's always better to wait a little longer than to overwater. The fleshy roots of Anthurium Regale rot quickly if they get too wet, which is difficult to correct once established.

Anthurium Regale is propagated by division of clumps or by separation of basal shoots, ideally in spring, between March and April, when the plant resumes active growth.

Division or separation of wasteAnthurium Regale does not produce creeping stems or stolons, but over the years develops offshoots or natural divisions at the base of the main plant. These offshoots, once sufficiently developed with their own visible root system, can be carefully separated from the parent plant.
