About
Provide your plants with an aerated and balanced substrate
Are your roots suffocating in a substrate that's too compact? Coconut chips and fibers create the ideal environment for healthy growth.
This blend combines two complementary textures: the coarse fragments ensure optimal drainage while the fibers retain just the right amount of moisture. The result: roots that breathe and thrive naturally.
Why choose this coconut blend?
Dual action: Effective drainage thanks to the fragments, controlled water retention thanks to the fibers.
100% natural: Derived from coconut, renewable and biodegradable.
Neutral pH: Compatible with all your indoor plants without risk of acidification.
Resistant: Decomposes slowly, retains its structure for several months.
Perfect for lightening your substrates or creating custom blends.
Transform your repotting by giving your plants the conditions they deserve.
Description

Everything you need to know Coconut flakes + coconut fibers
What is the difference between coconut flakes and coconut fibers?
Coconut chips are coarse pieces of 10 to 20 mm that create air pockets in the substrate, ensuring excellent drainage.
The finer fibers act like a natural sponge that retains moisture without creating a soggy area.
Together they perfectly balance aeration and hydration, something neither could achieve alone.
Avoid using only chips for plants that like constant humidity; the mix is specifically designed for this versatility.
How do I incorporate this mixture into my existing substrate?
Add 20 to 40% coconut chips and fibers to your substrate, depending on your plant's drainage needs.
This proportion makes it possible to significantly lighten a compacted potting mix without compromising its ability to retain nutrients.
Lightly moisten the coco mix before incorporating it to facilitate its homogeneous integration and prevent it from floating during the first watering.
Do not add more than 50% even for epiphytic plants, as you risk them drying out too quickly between waterings.
For which plants is this mixture particularly suitable?
Tropical and epiphytic plants love this mix: Monstera, Philodendron, Anthurium, orchids and Hoya in particular.
These species naturally possess aerial roots adapted to air and a light substrate in their native habitat.
Use a higher proportion (40-50%) for epiphytes and a more moderate one (20-30%) for plants with fine roots such as Calathea.
Avoid for succulents and cacti that prefer a mineral substrate with less water retention.
My coconut oil mixture seems to repel water, what should I do?
Dried coconut becomes hydrophobic and water slides off it without penetrating; this is normal behavior for this material.
Coconut fibers contain natural waxes which, once dehydrated, create this temporary barrier.
Soak your pot in a basin of lukewarm water for 15 to 20 minutes to completely rehydrate the substrate thoroughly.
Prevent this problem by maintaining a light, constant humidity or by watering more frequently in small amounts rather than large, spaced-out volumes.
What amendments can be combined with coconut flakes and fibers?
Since coconut is a neutral material without nutrients, always combine it with asuitable fertilizerduring watering.
Coco alone does not nourish your plants, it only structures the substrate and manages water.
For a complete substrate, mix in perlite for even more drainage, or...living sphagnum mossfor plants that require a lot of moisture.
Avoid adding sand, which would weigh down the mixture and negate the desired benefits of lightness.
What is the difference between perlite and vermiculite for aerating a substrate?
Coconut chips offer comparable aeration to perlite but with better water retention thanks to the associated fibers.
Perlite drains without retaining, vermiculite retains a lot but collapses over time, while cocoa balances the two properties in a lasting way.
Choose coco coir for tropical plants that like constant humidity, and perlite for those that prefer to dry out quickly between waterings.
Coconut also has the advantage of being biodegradable and renewable, unlike perlite, which is of non-renewable volcanic origin.
The essentials regarding Coconut flakes + coconut fibers
What are coconut flakes and coconut fibers?
THEcoconut flakesThese are fragments of coconut shell from the agri-food industry, valued as a natural and sustainable horticultural amendment. Combined withcoconut fibersMade from lightweight fibrous material extracted from the same shell, they form a complementary duo to improve the structure, aeration, and moisture retention of any indoor growing medium. This coconut coir mix for plants is a natural and eco-friendly alternative to peat-based components, the extraction of which is problematic for the environment.
Properties and role of coconut chips and fibers in the substrate
THEcoconut fibers for substrateThey retain moisture gradually and steadily, reducing the frequency of watering while maintaining a balanced root environment between applications. The more rigid and coarse coconut chips create permanent air spaces between the roots, improving drainage and preventing substrate compaction. Together, they can retain up to 8 times their weight in water and offer a lifespan of several months without decomposing quickly.
Which plants benefit from coconut chips and fibers?
Epiphytic orchids:Natural aerial substrate for photosynthetic roots
Monstera and Philodendron:balanced aeration and water retention for climbing plants
Hoya and Dischidia:coconut-based drainage mix for epiphytic plants
Sowing and cuttings:Light, moist substrate for young, fragile roots
Anthurium and Araceae:open structure close to natural forest conditions
Coco vs peat: why choose a coco-based substrate for your plants?
Peat is extracted from protected peat bogs, the exploitation of which releases CO2 accumulated over millennia, resulting in a significant environmental impact. Coconut chips and fibers are byproducts of the food industry, requiring no specific extraction from the natural environment. In terms of performance, coconut coir plant substrate offers comparable water retention to peat, with superior aeration and significantly slower decomposition, making it a sustainable and natural soil amendment.
