About

Horticultural vermiculite: the lightweight ally for your substrates

Are your plants suffocating in a substrate that's too compact? Vermiculite transforms any mix into an airy environment where roots can finally breathe.

This expanded natural mineral has a unique layered structure that retains water and nutrients while creating essential air pockets. The result: a substrate that remains flexible, never waterlogged, where your plants develop a vigorous root system.

Why choose this vermiculite?

  • Optimal water retention: The leaves absorb moisture and gradually release it to the roots.
  • Sustainable aeration: Its structure does not compact over time, unlike other amendments.
  • Neutral pH: Compatible with all your plants without altering the balance of your substrate.
  • Horticultural quality: Calibrated particle size for homogeneous integration into your mixtures.

Used by professionals, this vermiculite is suitable for both repotting and cuttings.

Give your plants the substrate they deserve — add this vermiculite to your basket.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Vermiculite for Plants - Horticultural Grade

What is the difference between vermiculite and perlite?

Vermiculite retains water, while perlite promotes drainage. Vermiculite has a layered structure that absorbs moisture like a sponge and releases it gradually. Perlite, with its closed pores, allows water to drain quickly.

Use vermiculite for plants that prefer consistently moist conditions (Calathea, ferns). Opt for perlite for those that dislike overwatering (succulents, Hoya). Ideally, combine the two for a balanced substrate.

How do I dose the vermiculite in my substrate?

Incorporate between 10 and 20% vermiculite, depending on your plants' needs. For tropical species that prefer high humidity, increase this to 25%. For a more free-draining substrate, keep it around 10%.

Mix thoroughly to distribute the vermiculite evenly. Lightly moisten the mixture before repotting: this prevents the dry vermiculite from absorbing all the water from the first watering and makes handling easier and dust-free.

Which plants benefit most from vermiculite?

Tropical plants that thrive in consistently humid conditions particularly benefit from vermiculite: Calathea, Maranta, ferns, Anthurium, and Spathiphyllum. Their fine roots appreciate a substrate that remains moist without being waterlogged.

Vermiculite is also excellent for cuttings and germination thanks to its water retention capacity and sterility. Avoid using it in excess for plants sensitive to humidity, such as succulents or cacti, which prefer a substrate that dries quickly.

My vermiculite seems to be compacting over time, is this normal?

No, horticultural-grade vermiculite retains its structure for several years. If it becomes compacted, it's often due to excessive watering that settles the substrate, or to too high a proportion in the mix.

Water gently and evenly rather than with a direct jet. If compaction persists, your vermiculite may have been too fine. Use a medium to coarse grain size for repotting and reserve the fine grain size for cuttings.

What other amendments can be combined with vermiculite?

Vermiculite pairs perfectly with perlite to balance water retention and drainage. A classic ratio is 1 part vermiculite, 1 part perlite, and 3 parts base substrate. Add pine bark for epiphytes or coconut chips for added structure.

For a complete homemade substrate, combine your mix with ourLiquid fertilizerbecause vermiculite alone does not provide nutrients to plants.

Does vermiculite change the pH of my substrate?

Horticultural vermiculite has a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (7 to 7.5), which does not significantly impact the balance of your substrate when used in the recommended proportions. It remains compatible with the majority of houseplants.

For acid-loving plants like azaleas or certain ferns, compensate by using a slightly acidic base substrate or adding peat. Test the pH of your final mix if you are growing species that are particularly sensitive to this parameter.

The essentials regarding Vermiculite for Plants - Horticultural Grade

What is horticultural vermiculite?

Therehorticultural vermiculiteThis is a naturally occurring expanded mineral produced by transforming mica under intense heat exceeding 800 degrees Celsius. This lightweight and sterile amendment, also known as plant vermiculite or horticultural vermiculite, comes in golden flakes capable of absorbing up to four times their weight in water while remaining aerated. Its inert composition and neutral pH make it an ideal material for improving the water retention of any indoor growing medium.

Properties and role of vermiculite in the substrate

Therecultured vermiculiteIt acts like a natural sponge at the heart of the substrate: it absorbs water and nutrients during watering, then gradually releases them to the roots as the soil dries. This mechanism reduces water stress between waterings and maintains a stable and balanced root environment. It also improves the structure of the mix by preventing gradual compaction, while remaining soft and non-abrasive for sensitive young roots.

Which plants benefit from horticultural vermiculite?

  • Ferns and hygrophilous plants:maintaining a fresh and structured substrate
  • Calathea and Marantaceae:gentle water retention to combat water stress
  • Sowing and cuttings:Constant humidity for the rooting of young shoots
  • Orchids in mixed substrate:regular moisture application between waterings
  • Tropical plants that require frequent watering:sustainable and natural water balance

Vermiculite or perlite: what's the difference for your houseplants?

The question of vermiculite versus perlite often arises among gardeners who create their own homemade mixes. Vermiculite retains moisture and releases it gradually, making it ideal for plants that prefer a slightly cool substrate between waterings. Perlite, on the other hand, drains and aerates without retaining water, making it better suited to species sensitive to overwatering. For most tropical plants, combining the two results in a substrate that is both well-draining and moist, resulting in a balanced and long-lasting solution.
