Like all members of the Araceae family, it contains calcium oxalate crystals present in all parts of the plant: leaves, stems, and rhizome. These microscopic crystals cause immediate and painful irritation of the mouth, throat, and digestive tract if ingested or if they come into prolonged contact with mucous membranes.

If ingested, the most common symptoms are excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, vomiting, and local swelling. These reactions are rarely serious but require prompt veterinary or medical attention if there is any doubt.

What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?

Place your Alocasia Zebrina in a high spot or in a room inaccessible to pets and young children. It is also recommended to wear gloves when repotting or pruning to avoid skin contact with the sap.

1. Carefully remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary to loosen the root ball without pulling on the stems.
2. Gently loosen the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them. Take this opportunity to separate any secondary rhizomes.
3. Place a layer of substrate at the bottom of the pot, position the plant upright, then fill in without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water moderately to help the potting mix settle around the roots. Avoid overwatering for two weeks after repotting, as the freshly handled rhizome is more susceptible to rot.
