About

Roots that can finally breathe

Excess water is the number one enemy of your plants. Clay pebbles create a protective barrier that drains away excess water and allows air to circulate to the roots.

Lightweight, durable, and 100% natural, these expanded clay pebbles can be used at the bottom of pots or as decorative mulch. They regulate moisture without ever decomposing.

Why choose our clay pebbles?

  • Optimal drainage: Water flows freely, no more roots stagnating in moisture.
  • Root aeration: The spaces between the beads allow oxygen to circulate.
  • Infinitely reusable: A rinse is all it takes to use them from one repotting to the next.
  • Versatile: For drainage, mixed into the substrate or as an aesthetic mulch.

Made from clay fired at high temperature, they are free of any chemicals.

Give your plants the foundation they deserve.

Description

The drainage layer that each pot should have

Our clay marbles are made ofnatural expanded clayporous and lightweight. They create a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot which prevents the roots from sitting in excess water.

Their porosity also allows them to absorb and slowly release moisture, creating abalanced root microclimateReusable after simple rinsing.

Benefits

  • Drainage:prevents water from stagnating in the pot
  • Reusable:Rinse and reuse with each repotting.
  • Lightweight:lighten the pot without sacrificing drainage
  • Natural:expanded clay, without chemical additives
  • Versatile:drainage, hydroculture, surface layer

Use

Ask3 to 5 cm of marblesat the bottom of the pot before the substrate. In hydroponics, use the clay pebbles as the main substrate, rinsing them every few minutes.2 to 3 weeksReuse after cleaning with water.

Recommendations

Universal substrate: combine clay pebbles and universal substrate for a complete and well-drained repotting.Liquid fertilizer: supplement with regular nutrition after repotting.

The foundation of any good repotting, simple and natural.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Clay pebbles

What are clay balls made of?

The clay balls are made from pure natural clay, without chemical additives.

The clay is shaped into balls and then fired in a rotary kiln at over 1000°C. This extreme temperature causes the clay to swell and creates thousands of micro-cavities inside, hence their lightness and drainage capacity.

Their honeycomb structure retains just enough moisture to create a favorable microclimate without ever becoming waterlogged.

Unlike gravel, they do not alter the pH of the substrate and remain stable for years.

How to use clay pebbles when repotting?

Start by rinsing the marbles to remove manufacturing dust.

Pour a 2 to 5 cm layer into the bottom of the pot, depending on its depth. This layer prevents the substrate from clogging the drainage holes and creates a buffer zone where excess water can drain away.

Next, add your substrate on top. Never place a saucer filled with stagnant water under the pot, as this will negate the drainage effect.

A common mistake is packing the marbles too tightly. Leave them loose so that air can circulate freely.

Which plants benefit most from clay pebbles?

All potted plants benefit from good drainage, but some are particularly sensitive to it.

Tropical plants like Monstera, Philodendron, and Anthurium hate having their roots in stagnant water, despite their need for humidity. Succulents and cacti require excellent drainage to prevent rot.

Calathea and Maranta appreciate the regulated humidity provided by a layer of beads on the surface.

Only semi-aquatic plants like Papyrus do not need it since they tolerate having their roots in water.

My substrate remains waterlogged despite the clay pebbles, what should I do?

The problem rarely comes from the marbles themselves, but from how they are used.

First, check that your pot has drainage holes. Without drainage, water will accumulate in the layer of pebbles and rise by capillary action. Also, make sure the potting mix isn't too compact or too rich in peat, as this retains excess water.

Another common cause is overwatering. The clay pebbles slow down waterlogging but do not compensate for chronic overwatering.

If the pot has no drainage holes, use the clay pebbles in pure hydroponics, without substrate.

Can clay pebbles be mixed directly into the substrate?

Yes, and it's even recommended for some plants that like very aerated soil.

Incorporate 10 to 20% clay pebbles into your substrate to lighten the mix and create permanent air pockets. The roots will colonize these spaces and have easier access to oxygen.

This technique is particularly suitable for Hoya, Anthurium, and orchids. Combine this method with ourHoya potting soilOrAnthurium potting soilalready formulated for drainage.

Avoid this mixture for plants that prefer constantly moist soil, such as ferns.

What is the difference between clay pebbles, perlite and pozzolana?

These three materials improve drainage but with distinct properties.

Clay pebbles are the largest and are mainly used at the bottom of pots. Their size prevents the potting mix from seeping through and clogging the drainage holes. Perlite, which is finer, mixes with the potting mix to aerate it without creating large air pockets. Pumice, of volcanic origin, is heavier and stabilizes the pots of larger plants.

For complete drainage, use clay pebbles at the bottom of the pot and perlite in the substrate.

Our enriched substrates already contain the necessary perlite, simply add the marbles as a drainage layer.

The essentials regarding Clay pebbles

What are clay pebbles for plants?

THEclay ballsThese are small spheres of natural clay fired at high temperatures. Lightweight, porous, and 100% inert, they are used as a drainage layer at the bottom of pots or as an amendment to indoor growing media. Also called hydro-beads or expanded clay, they do not decompose and retain their drainage and aeration properties for several years of continuous use. Their porous surface allows them to absorb and release water gradually, creating a natural micro-reservoir around the roots.

Properties and role of clay balls in the substrate

Placed in a 3 to 5 cm layer at the bottom of the pot, theexpanded clay beadsThey insulate the roots from the stagnant water that naturally accumulates at the bottom of a pot without drainage, thus preventing root rot, a problem that affects many houseplants. When mixed in, they aerate the potting mix and reduce its gradual compaction with watering. Indefinitely reusable after rinsing, they represent a sustainable investment that also reduces the overall weight of the pot by up to 20%.

Which plants benefit from clay pebbles?

  • Orchids and epiphytes:drainage layer to prevent stagnant water
  • Ficus and large plants in deep pots:pot relief and drainage
  • Hydroponic and semi-hydroponic cultivation:reusable inert mineral substrate
  • Calathea and plants sensitive to overwatering:natural protection for the bottom of the pot
  • Terrarium and vivarium:drainage layer for enclosed humid environments

Clay pebbles or gravel: which should you choose for the bottom of the pot?

Gravel is heavy, non-porous, and ineffective for regulating the pot's moisture. Clay pebbles, on the other hand, are lightweight, porous, and sterile, providing excellent drainage and natural insulation between the potting mix and excess water. For an effective pot base that protects roots without adding weight, clay pebbles remain the go-to solution used by experienced gardeners for decades.
