Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Butterfly plant clips x10 - Butterfly plant support clips - Support clips - Plant support clips

What material are these butterfly clips made of?

These clips are made of sturdy plastic with an integrated spring mechanism.

This material was chosen for its resistance to ambient humidity and repeated watering, unlike metal clips which can rust when in contact with water.

Their controlled flexibility allows sufficient pressure to be applied to hold the stem without crushing it, even on tender young shoots.

Avoid exposing them to prolonged direct sunlight, which could weaken the plastic in the long term.

How do I properly position the clips on my plants?

Place a clamp every 15 to 20 centimeters along the stem, starting from the base.

This regular spacing distributes the weight of the plant and prevents unsupported sections from sagging or twisting towards the light.

When installing, be sure to leave a slight gap between the stem and the clamp to allow for the natural thickening of the trunk.

Never attach a clip to a node or budding area, you risk blocking the emergence of new leaves or aerial roots.

Which plants benefit most from this type of staking?

Climbing and semi-climbing plants make the most of these clips: Monstera, Philodendron, Pothos, Syngonium and Hoya in particular.

These species naturally develop aerial roots that seek support. By guiding them vertically, you stimulate the production of larger, more deeply lobed leaves, as in their natural habitat.

The clips are also suitable for plants with fragile stems such as some Begonias or Alocasia which need temporary support.

On the other hand, they are not well suited to plants with very thin stems such as Tradescantia, where a flexible wire would be more appropriate.

My pliers are leaving marks on the stems, what should I do?

Marks usually appear when the clamp is too tight or positioned too long in the same spot on a growing stem.

The stem naturally thickens over time, and a clamp that initially fit well may become compressive after a few weeks.

Inspect your supports monthly and loosen or reposition any clips that appear to be pushing the stem in. Place them slightly below a node rather than directly on top of it.

If marks are already visible, remove the relevant clip: the plant will heal naturally, but the mark will remain on that section of stem.

Which supports should these butterfly clips be used with?

These clips adapt to most supports: foam stakes, transparent stakes, hoops and even natural branches.

For optimal aesthetic results, combine them with ourtransparent tutorswhich visually disappear into the foliage.

On aarch tutor for HoyaThey allow the long vines to be guided without damaging them during shaping.

Avoid stakes with a diameter that is too large, as this would prevent the clamp from closing properly around the stem and the support simultaneously.

How does this differ from Velcro fasteners or classic ties?

Butterfly clips offer instant and repositionable hold, whereas Velcro ties or strings require more handling.

Their main advantage is pressure distribution: the flared shape avoids the single point of contact that can shear soft stems. The thin ties, even flexible ones, concentrate the tension over a few millimeters.

Velcro fasteners remain excellent for thick stems or complex trellising where pliers cannot fit.

The ideal solution is to combine the two: butterfly clips for standard sections, Velcro for delicate joints or special shapes.

Theseplant support clipsThey attach to the support and hold the stem without excessive pressure thanks to their open shape. Butterfly clips or Velcro ribbon: which should you choose to guide your plants?

Velcro is better suited for securely and permanently attaching thick stems to a support. For fast-growing climbers, the 10-pack of butterfly clips offers more flexibility and speed than hand-cut Velcro.
