In its natural Colombian habitat, this epiphytic Anthurium lives in the shaded undergrowth of tropical rainforests. It is therefore naturally adapted to filtered light, never receiving direct sunlight. Indoors, too much direct light discolors and irreparably burns its precious blistered foliage, while insufficient light slows its growth and diminishes the characteristic texture of its leaves.

In summer, keep it slightly away from the windows to avoid direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. In autumn and winter, you can move it closer to the window to compensate for the decrease in natural sunlight.

Anthurium Luxurians is toxic to cats, dogs and young children, due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals in all parts of the plant.

These microscopic crystals, present in the leaves, stems, and sap, cause immediate and intense irritation of the mucous membranes upon contact or ingestion. This is a natural defense mechanism common to the entire Araceae family, to which Anthurium luxurians belongs.

If ingested by an animal or child, the most common symptoms are oral irritation, swelling of the lips or tongue, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting. These symptoms are usually moderate to severe and disappear within a few hours, but a medical or veterinary consultation is recommended as a precaution.

What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?

Place the Anthurium Luxurians in a high place or in a room inaccessible to animals and young children. Even simple contact with the sap can irritate sensitive skin: remember to wear gloves when repotting or pruning.

The leaves of Anthurium Luxurians most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

1. Carefully remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary to loosen the root ball without pulling on the stems.
2. Gently loosen the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them. There's no need to rinse systematically: the main goal is to give them more space.
3. Place a layer of substrate at the bottom of the pot, position the plant upright, then fill with substrate without burying the crown.

During autumn and winter, from November to February, significantly reduce or stop fertilizing. This is a period of dormancy during which the plant produces few or no new leaves.

Water Anthurium Luxurians when the substrate has dried out completely, approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 12 to 15 days in winter. Use room temperature water.

How do I know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger into the substrate to a depth of 2 to 3 cm. If the substrate is dry, it's time to water. If it's still damp, wait a few more days.
