About

Pumice stone: the secret to perfect drainage

Are your plants suffering from overwatering? 7/14mm pumice stone transforms your substrates into true havens for thriving roots.

This natural volcanic mineral creates essential air pockets in your soil mixes. Light and porous, pumice absorbs excess moisture while gradually releasing it according to your plants' needs.

Why choose pumice stone?

  • Unparalleled drainage: Prevents water stagnation which causes root rot.
  • Optimal aeration: The roots breathe and develop vigorously.
  • Water regulation: Absorbs and releases water gradually, like a mineral sponge.
  • Total durability: Never decomposes, reusable indefinitely.

7/14mm caliber ideal for aerated substrates and drainage layers at the bottom of pots.

Give your plants the foundation they deserve.

Description

The volcanic mineral that transforms any substrate

Our caliber pumice stone7/14mmIt is an inert, natural volcanic material. In 4L containers, it permanently improves the drainage and aeration of all your custom substrates, without ever degrading over time.

Its porous structure slightly retains moisture while creating essential air pockets. The roots breatheand remain healthy between waterings.

Benefits

  • Volcanic:natural, inert, chemical-free
  • Caliber 7/14:versatile for most species
  • Permanent :never degrades in the substrate
  • Drainage:prevents water compaction and stagnation
  • 4L:Generous volume for many homemade blends

Use

Add20 to 30%of pumice stone in your base substrate. For Anthuriums, Hoyas, or orchids, increase the amount to40%Rinse with water before use to remove fine dust particles. Compatible with all substrates.

Recommendations

Anthurium potting soil: already enriched with pumice for optimal drainage, the natural complement to this product.Hoya potting soil: add pumice to further customize the drainage of your Hoya.

Volcanic nature at the service of the most demanding roots.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Pumice Pumice Pomice 7/14mm - 4L

What is the composition and origin of pumice stone?

Pumice is a 100% natural volcanic rock formed during explosive eruptions.

Its honeycomb structure results from the rapid cooling of gas-laden lava, creating thousands of micro-cavities. This natural porosity gives it its exceptional drainage properties.

The 7/14mm caliber offers an ideal balance between exchange surface and air circulation in the substrate.

Unlike expanded clay beads, pumice has open pores that actually absorb water.

How do I properly use pumice stone in my substrates?

Incorporate 15 to 30% pumice stone into your substrate mix according to your plants' drainage needs.

This proportion ensures sufficient aeration without compromising the necessary water retention. For plants very sensitive to humidity, such as Hoya or succulents, increase this to 40%.

As a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot, spread 2 to 3 centimeters of pumice before adding the substrate.

Avoid excessive rinsing before use: the fine mineral dust provides beneficial trace elements.

Which plants benefit most from pumice stone?

Epiphytic plants and those originating from rocky environments love pumice stone: Hoya, Anthurium, orchids, cacti and succulents.

These plants have roots adapted to well-aerated substrates that dry out quickly between waterings. Excess moisture quickly causes them to rot.

Monstera, Philodendron and other aroids also appreciate a substrate enriched with pumice to stimulate their root system.

Only plants from humid environments, such as Calathea, prefer more water-retaining substrates with fewer drainage amendments.

What mistakes should you avoid when using pumice stone?

The main mistake is using too much pumice stone in a substrate for water-hungry tropical plants.

Excessive drainage necessitates very frequent watering, which depletes the substrate of nutrients. Always adjust the amount of water to the actual needs of each plant.

Do not confuse pumice stone and pozzolana: the latter retains less water and is better suited to outdoor gardens.

Also avoid compacting the substrate when repotting, as this would negate the aeration benefits provided by the pumice.

How can pumice stone be combined with other soil amendments?

Pumice stone combines perfectly with perlite, pine bark and coconut chips to create custom substrates.

Each amendment provides complementary properties: perlite for lightness, bark for acidity, coconut for water retention.

For an ideal Hoya substrate, mix pumice, fine bark andHoya potting soil enriched with biostimulants.

Thereliving sphagnum mossThe surface perfectly complements a draining substrate while maintaining ambient humidity.

What is the difference between pumice stone and clay balls?

Pumice stone absorbs water through its open pores, unlike clay beads which simply cause it to run off the surface.

This absorption capacity allows the pumice to create a buffer reservoir that regulates moisture. The clay pebbles serve only passive drainage without retention.

Pumice stone also remains lighter for the same volume and does not rise to the surface when watered.

For drainage at the bottom of the pot, both work. To improve a substrate, pumice offers a real advantage that clay pebbles cannot provide.

What is horticultural pumice stone?

TherePumice StonePumice is a natural, porous, and ultra-light volcanic mineral used as a drainage amendment in indoor plant substrates. Also known as horticultural pumice, it comes in irregular, sterile, and inert granules ranging from 7 to 14 mm in size, creating permanent and stable air pockets within the root zone. Its natural volcanic composition and neutral pH make it one of the most popular mineral amendments for sustainably improving the structure of any well-draining substrate.

Properties and role of Pumice in the substrate

Therehorticultural pomegranateIt combines the properties of drainage and slight water retention thanks to its internal micropores that absorb and gradually release water. Unlike perlite, which is exclusively for drainage, Pumice pumice retains a small amount of moisture on the surface of its pores, creating an ideal balance between drying and residual moisture. Its 7 to 14 mm grain size provides maximum root aeration without compacting or dissolving over time, even after 24 months of continuous use.

Which plants benefit from Pumice Pumice Stone?

  • Hoya and epiphytic plants:mineral-based drainage substrate close to their natural habitat
  • Cacti and succulents:Complete drainage to prevent root rot
  • Monstera in a mineral mix:Sustainable aeration for large tropical roots
  • Hydroponic and homemade ponics:mineral component for inorganic substrate
  • Orchids in coarse substrate:pumice as a drainage base for epiphytes

Pumice or horticultural perlite: what's the difference for your plants?

Perlite is exclusively draining and absorbs virtually no moisture, making it ideal for plants that require a substrate that dries out completely between waterings. Pumice retains a slight moisture in its micropores, giving it a dual role: drainage and gentle water regulation. For homemade mineral substrates like Pon or for plants that tolerate a little residual moisture, pumice remains the most versatile and stable volcanic amendment.
