Horticultural perlite for roots that breathe
Are your plants suffocating in overly compacted soil? Excess moisture is the silent enemy of your houseplants.
Horticultural perlite transforms any substrate into an aerated and draining environment. These white granules of volcanic origin create essential air pockets around the roots, preventing asphyxiation and rot.
Why choose our horticultural perlite?
Optimal drainage: Water flows freely, no more waterlogged roots.
Substrate aeration: The roots breathe and develop vigorously.
Unparalleled lightness: Lightens your pots without sacrificing stability.
Total durability: Does not decompose, effective for years.
Inert and pH neutral, perlite adapts to all your plants without altering the balance of your substrate.
Give your roots the oxygen they deserve.
Description
The essential element for drainage and aeration
Our horticultural perlite is aexpanded volcanic mineralUltra-light and sterile. Added to any substrate, it immediately improves drainage and creates the air pockets that roots need.
Its porous structure allows excess water to pass through while maintaining slight humidity around the roots. The substrate remains looseand structured over time.
Benefits
Drainage:prevents the substrate from becoming waterlogged
Ultra-lightweight:significantly reduces the weight of the pot
Sterile:parasite-free, disease-free, odor-free
Permanent:does not deteriorate, lasts for years
Versatile:for all species, all substrates
Use
Add20 to 30%of perlite to your base substrate. For plants very sensitive to overwatering (succulents, cacti), increase the amount to50%Also ideal as a drainage layer at the bottom of the pot.
Recommendations
Hoya potting soil: already enriched with calibrated perlite, perfect for Hoya plants that are sensitive to excess water.Universal substrate: the base to be amended with perlite to personalize your mixtures.
Aerate your substrates, free up your roots.

Everything you need to know Horticultural Perlite - Perlite for plants
What is horticultural perlite made of?
Perlite is a natural volcanic rock, primarily composed of silica.
Heated to over 900°C, it expands like popcorn and forms those characteristic white granules. This expansion creates an alveolar structure that traps air while allowing water to circulate.
Unlike vermiculite, which absorbs moisture, perlite promotes the rapid drainage of excess water.
A completely inert material, it provides neither nutrients nor chemical modifications to your substrate.
How do I use perlite in my substrates?
Incorporate 10 to 30% perlite into your base substrate by mixing evenly.
This proportion creates a balance between moisture retention and drainage. Tropical plants thrive in 15-20%, while succulents and cacti prefer 30-40%.
Lightly moisten the perlite before mixing to reduce dust and facilitate homogeneous incorporation.
Avoid compacting the substrate after repotting, as this will negate the benefits of aeration.
Why do my plants need perlite?
Roots need as much oxygen as water to function properly.
In a compacted substrate, air cannot circulate and the roots gradually suffocate. This root stress manifests as yellowing leaves, slowed growth, or brown and soft roots.
Perlite creates permanent air spaces that allow roots to breathe even after watering.
Without adequate drainage, even moderate watering can cause stagnation that is fatal to your plants.
The perlite is rising to the surface of my pots, what should I do?
This phenomenon is normal because perlite is lighter than water and the wet substrate.
During watering, the granules tend to float and then settle back to the surface. This does not affect their effectiveness in the existing mixture.
To limit this inconvenience, cover the surface with a thin layer of substrate or decorative moss.
Avoid excessive watering, which creates a significant mixing effect in the pot.
What substrates can be used with perlite?
Perlite is ideally suited to all organic substrates that tend to compact.
Mixed withCalathea potting soilIt improves drainage while preserving the moisture needed by tropical plants. With theMonstera SubstrateIt optimizes aeration for aerial roots.
Simply avoid mixtures with more than 50% perlite, which would retain too little moisture.
What is the difference between perlite and vermiculite?
Perlite drains, vermiculite retains: two opposite and complementary functions.
Perlite allows water to drain quickly and maintains substrate aeration. Vermiculite, on the other hand, absorbs moisture like a sponge and releases it gradually.
Choose perlite for plants sensitive to excess water: succulents, cacti, Hoya, Sansevieria. Opt for vermiculite for plants that are heavy water users or to maintain humidity in summer.
The combination of the two creates a balanced substrate that drains well but does not dry out too quickly.
The essentials regarding Horticultural Perlite - Perlite for plants
What is horticultural perlite?
Therehorticultural perlitePerlite is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral, obtained by high-temperature expansion of obsidian rock heated to over 900 degrees Celsius. This growing-grade perlite comes in the form of small, lightweight, porous white beads that are completely inert and sterile, also commonly referred to as plant perlite. Its stable mineral composition and neutral pH make it the most versatile potting amendment for improving drainage in any indoor substrate, without risk of pests or decomposition.
Properties and role of perlite in the substrate
Thereperlite for plantsIt creates permanent aeration spaces between the substrate particles, allowing roots to breathe freely between waterings. It accelerates the drainage of excess water, reduces the overall weight of the pot by up to 25%, and prevents the substrate from compacting over time. Unlike vermiculite, horticultural perlite does not retain moisture: its sole purpose is to drain and aerate, and it does so effectively for several months without any loss of performance.
Which plants benefit from horticultural perlite?
Hoya and epiphytic plants:an aerated substrate close to their natural tropical habitat
Succulents and cacti:Rapid drainage to prevent root rot
Monstera and Araceae:roots that breathe freely between waterings
Sowing and cuttings:sterile and well-draining environment for all young roots
Plants sensitive to overwatering:natural protection against root asphyxiation
Perlite or vermiculite: what's the difference for your houseplants?
Perlite drains and aerates without retaining water, making it ideal for plants that prefer a dry substrate between waterings. Vermiculite retains moisture and releases it gradually, better suited to species that appreciate consistently moist soil. For tropical plants sensitive to overwatering, horticultural perlite is the safest choice, generally used at a rate of 20 to 30% in the mix to ensure effective drainage without completely drying out the substrate.
