What is horticultural perlite made of?

Perlite is a natural volcanic rock, primarily composed of silica.

Heated to over 900°C, it expands like popcorn and forms those characteristic white granules. This expansion creates an alveolar structure that traps air while allowing water to circulate.

Unlike vermiculite, which absorbs moisture, perlite promotes the rapid drainage of excess water.

A completely inert material, it provides neither nutrients nor chemical modifications to your substrate.

How do I use perlite in my substrates?

Incorporate 10 to 30% perlite into your base substrate by mixing evenly.

This proportion creates a balance between moisture retention and drainage. Tropical plants thrive in 15-20%, while succulents and cacti prefer 30-40%.

Lightly moisten the perlite before mixing to reduce dust and facilitate homogeneous incorporation.

Avoid compacting the substrate after repotting, as this will negate the benefits of aeration.

Why do my plants need perlite?

Roots need as much oxygen as water to function properly.

In a compacted substrate, air cannot circulate and the roots gradually suffocate. This root stress manifests as yellowing leaves, slowed growth, or brown and soft roots.

Perlite creates permanent air spaces that allow roots to breathe even after watering.

Without adequate drainage, even moderate watering can cause stagnation that is fatal to your plants.

The perlite is rising to the surface of my pots, what should I do?

This phenomenon is normal because perlite is lighter than water and the wet substrate.

During watering, the granules tend to float and then settle back to the surface. This does not affect their effectiveness in the existing mixture.

To limit this inconvenience, cover the surface with a thin layer of substrate or decorative moss.

Avoid excessive watering, which creates a significant mixing effect in the pot.

What substrates can be used with perlite?

Perlite is ideally suited to all organic substrates that tend to compact.
