About
Philodendron Gloriosum: the tropical velvet that transforms any interior
The Philodendron Gloriosum, a rare houseplant from the Araceae family, is native to the humid forests of Colombia, where it naturally grows on the ground as a creeping plant. Unlike the majority of climbing Philodendrons, the Gloriosum is a terrestrial species whose stoloniferous stem grows horizontally, producing one leaf at a time with mesmerizing slowness.
Its foliage is one of the most spectacular in the world of houseplants: large cordate leaves in a deep velvety green, crisscrossed by contrasting creamy white veins that form a precise and elegant network. This satin texture, almost tactile, has earned it the nickname "green velvet" among rare plant enthusiasts. Each new leaf of the Philodendron Gloriosum unfurls slowly from a pinkish spathe, an appearance always eagerly awaited by collectors.
Our Philodendron Gloriosum in a 12 cm pot is available for delivery, ready to join your collection. Order it today and receive it carefully packaged at your home.

Everything you need to know about Philodendron Gloriosum - 12cm Pot
What light exposure is best for my Philodendron Gloriosum?
The Philodendron Gloriosum prefers bright indirect light, ideally filtered by a sheer curtain or provided by an east- or west-facing window.
In its natural Colombian habitat, it grows beneath the dense canopy of tropical forests, which gives it a good tolerance for moderate shade. However, a prolonged lack of light results in noticeably slower growth and smaller leaves.
In summer, keep it away from south-facing windows after 10 a.m. In winter, move it closer to windows to compensate for the reduced natural light. An east-facing orientation is ideal year-round for this species.
Important tip 🌿Direct sunlight permanently burns the Gloriosum's velvety leaves, leaving white or brown patches that cannot be removed. For low-light rooms, our natural light grow light for houseplants faithfully mimics natural light without harmful UV rays.
Is the Philodendron Gloriosum toxic to animals and children?
The Philodendron Gloriosum is toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.
Like all Philodendrons, it contains insoluble calcium oxalate crystals in all its plant parts (leaves, stems, roots). These microscopic crystals cause intense mechanical irritation of the mucous membranes when ingested or upon prolonged contact.
In the event of ingestion, the most common symptoms are inflammation of the mouth and throat, excessive salivation, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting. These symptoms are generally temporary but should be taken seriously, especially in young children or small animals.
What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?
Place your Philodendron Gloriosum out of reach of pets and young children. A shelf or tall piece of furniture is the simplest and most effective solution.
With proper placement precautions, the Gloriosum can safely coexist in a household with animals or children, provided it remains out of their direct reach.
Why are the leaves of my Philodendron Gloriosum turning yellow?
Philodendron Gloriosum leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
As Philodendron Gloriosum is a slow-growing terrestrial species, it is particularly sensitive to a growing medium that remains waterlogged between waterings: always make sure the pot has good drainage and that water never stagnates in the saucer.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
When and how should I repot my Philodendron gloriosum?
The Philodendron Gloriosum is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out through the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
Generally, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
Note that the Gloriosum has a stoloniferous stem that grows horizontally: choose a pot that is wider than it is deep to give it the lateral space it needs to develop naturally.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, and make sure it has drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in around it without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Philodendron gloriosum?
Fertilize the Philodendron Gloriosum every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative rest period.
Properly balanced fertilization promotes:
denser, more vibrant foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resilience.
As a slow-growing terrestrial species, the Gloriosum benefits from nitrogen and micronutrients to support the development of its large heart-shaped leaves and maintain the intensity of their contrasting veins.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry soil: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Philodendron Gloriosum?
Water the Philodendron Gloriosum when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How to know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.
As a terrestrial plant with a creeping stem, the Philodendron Gloriosum does not tolerate excess moisture at the base: always ensure that water drains freely through the drainage holes and never let it sit in the saucer.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than too much, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Philodendron gloriosum?
The Philodendron Gloriosum is propagated by stoloniferous stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in full vigor.
Place the cutting in a warm place (22 to 26 °C) with bright indirect light. Keep the substrate slightly moist without ever letting it become waterlogged.
Rooting in live sphagnum moss is particularly recommended for the Gloriosum: this medium retains moisture without becoming saturated, which is ideal for this species sensitive to excess water. When transplanting, use our Philodendron substrate enriched with biostimulants.
Important tip 🌿The Philodendron Gloriosum usually takes 3 to 6 weeks to root. The first sign of success is the appearance of a new leaf from the node, indicating that the roots are well established and functional.
The essentials about Philodendron Gloriosum - 12cm Pot
Philodendron Gloriosum: identity and origin
The Philodendron Gloriosum, whose Latin name is Philodendron gloriosum, is a rare houseplant from the Araceae family, native to the humid tropical forests of Colombia and Central America. Unlike most climbing Philodendrons, it is a terrestrial species with a stoloniferous stem that grows horizontally along the ground, producing one leaf at a time. Its large, velvety heart-shaped leaves, with contrasting white veins, reach up to 90 cm in their natural environment.
Philodendron care: light, watering and substrate
The Philodendron appreciates bright indirect light and careful watering, only when the top few centimeters of the substrate have dried out. An ambient humidity level above 60% promotes its growth. For a substrate perfectly suited to its roots, choose our aerated substrate for Araceae enriched with beneficial fungi, designed for the oxygenation and healthy growth of Philodendrons and Monsteras.
Where to place your Philodendron for sumptuous foliage?
Bright indirect light: east or west window, ideal all year round.
Ambient humidity: minimum 60% for well-developed leaves.
Stable temperature: between 18 and 26 °C, away from drafts.
Low-light room: our full-spectrum grow light effectively compensates for the lack of natural light.
Frequently asked questions: why is my Philodendron Gloriosum no longer producing new leaves?
The Philodendron Gloriosum is a naturally slow-growing species, even under optimal conditions: a new leaf every 4 to 8 weeks during the growing season is completely normal. If growth stops completely, first check the light, temperature (below 16 °C, the plant goes dormant) and the condition of the substrate. A very recent repotting can also cause a growth pause while the plant acclimates; allow 2 to 3 weeks after delivery or repotting before worrying. Regular application of liquid fertilizer from March to October actively supports the production of new leaves.
