About
Alocasia 'Sabrina', the aroid with velvety foliage like a living work of art
Alocasia 'Sabrina' is a tropical houseplant from the Araceae family, native to the humid forests of Southeast Asia. Sometimes nicknamed the "velvety elephant ear" or "satin Alocasia", this cultivated variety stands out for its large arrow-shaped leaves with a slightly velvety underside and contrasting veins, botanical characteristics that make it immediately recognizable among other Alocasias.
The foliage of the Alocasia 'Sabrina' displays a deep, almost matte green on the top side, with light veins that draw a precise geometric network on each blade. Each new leaf slowly unfurls from the center of the rosette, gradually revealing its size, in a botanical spectacle that rare plant enthusiasts appreciate every day. Its sculpted silhouette and striking presence make it a centerpiece in any carefully decorated interior.
Our Alocasia 'Sabrina' is available for delivery: add it to your collection and receive this exceptional plant directly at your home, carefully packaged to travel safely.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Alocasia 'Sabrina'
What light exposure is best for my Alocasia 'Sabrina'?
Alocasia 'Sabrina' prefers bright, indirect light, protected from direct sunlight.
In its natural habitat in the tropical undergrowth of Southeast Asia, it receives light filtered through the canopy. Indoors, an east- or west-facing window is ideal. In summer, a light curtain protects the foliage from burning.
In winter, move it closer to the window to compensate for the reduced natural light. Avoid north-facing rooms, where insufficient light slows growth and dulls the foliage.
Important tip 🌿Prolonged lack of light is indicated by stretched stems and smaller, less colorful leaves. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for houseplants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Alocasia 'Sabrina' toxic to pets and children?
Alocasia 'Sabrina' is toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.
Like all Alocasia plants, it contains calcium oxalate crystals in its leaf tissues and stems. If ingested, these microscopic crystals cause severe mechanical irritation to the mouth, throat, and digestive tract.
If ingested, the most common symptoms are: burning and swelling of the mouth, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, and vomiting. These symptoms are rarely severe but require prompt veterinary or medical attention.
What precautions should you take?
Place Alocasia 'Sabrina' out of reach of young children and pets that might chew on its leaves.
With a few simple placement precautions, this plant can safely coexist in a home with children and pets.
Why are the leaves of my Alocasia 'Sabrina' turning yellow?
Alocasia 'Sabrina' leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by overwatering, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-coloured spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
Alocasia 'Sabrina' may also lose one or two lower leaves at the start of winter dormancy: this natural behaviour in rhizomatous Alocasias should not be confused with a cultivation problem.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
When and how should I repot my Alocasia 'Sabrina'?
The Alocasia 'Sabrina' is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out through the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
After receiving your Alocasia 'Sabrina', wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering repotting: the plant needs to adapt to its new environment before undergoing this procedure.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently loosen the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Alocasia 'Sabrina'?
Fertilize Alocasia 'Sabrina' every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's dormant period.
Properly dosed fertilizer promotes:
denser, more vibrant foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resilience.
Alocasia 'Sabrina' is a heavy nutrient consumer during its active growth phase in spring and summer: its large leaves require a regular supply of nitrogen to maintain their deep green color and vigor.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry soil: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Alocasia 'Sabrina'?
Water the Alocasia 'Sabrina' when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.
Unlike other tropical plants, the Alocasia 'Sabrina' has underground rhizomes that store water: excessive and frequent watering causes them to rot much more quickly than a plant with conventional fibrous roots.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes the roots to rot.
How do I propagate my Alocasia 'Sabrina'?
Alocasia 'Sabrina' is propagated by dividing the rhizomes or separating the pups, ideally in spring during the annual repotting.
Rhizome division or pup separationAt the time of repotting, examine the base of the plant: you will often find small secondary rhizomes or pups (small bulbs) that come off easily. Cut them cleanly using our stainless steel pruning shears for a clean cut that limits the risk of infection.
Take a well-formed pup or a rhizome section bearing at least one visible bud.
Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 3 to 6 weeks. The sign of success is the appearance of a new leaf from the bud: wait for this signal before transplanting into a permanent pot.
The essentials regarding Alocasia 'Sabrina'
Alocasia 'Sabrina': identity and origin
Alocasia 'Sabrina', known by the scientific name Alocasia cv. Sabrina, is a cultivated variety of the Araceae family, originating from the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia. Nicknamed the "velvety elephant ear", it stands out for its large arrow-shaped leaves with remarkable graphic foliage, featuring light-colored veins contrasting against a deep, almost matte green background.
Alocasia care: light, watering and substrate
Alocasia prefers bright indirect light, at least 1 meter away from an east or west-facing window. The substrate should dry out thoroughly between waterings to prevent rhizome rot, a characteristic sensitivity of this family. We recommend our universal substrate enriched with biostimulants, formulated to ensure optimal drainage and continuous root oxygenation.
Where to place your Alocasia for dense and vigorous foliage?
Light: bright and indirect, an east or west window is ideal.
Temperature: between 18 and 26 °C, away from cold drafts.
Ambient humidity: maintain above 50% to prevent brown leaf edges.
Frequently asked questions: why do the leaves of my Alocasia 'Sabrina' turn black at the edges?
Blackened or browned edges on Alocasia 'Sabrina' leaves are primarily caused by excess water at the roots or rhizomes. If the substrate is thoroughly dry, then check the light levels: a lack of light weakens the plant and promotes these symptoms. In a heated apartment, ambient humidity below 50% dries out the leaf edges: our Care Pack helps maintain the necessary humidity level. Finally, a nutrient deficiency can worsen the situation during the growing season.
