Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Amber Love Begonia

What light exposure is best for my Amber Love Begonia?

The Amber Love Begonia prefers bright indirect light, ideally within two meters of a well-exposed window.

In its natural environment, the begonia grows under forest cover, filtered by the canopy. It therefore appreciates plenty of brightness without ever receiving direct rays, especially in summer. An east or west exposure is perfectly suitable.

In summer, move it slightly away from the window or place a sheer curtain in between if the exposure is south. In winter, move it as close to the window as possible to compensate for the drop in natural light.

Important tip 🌿Direct sunlight wilts and permanently burns the coppery foliage of the Amber Love Begonia, which does not regenerate easily. For low-light rooms, our grow light for indoor plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.

Is the Amber Love Begonia toxic to pets and children?

The Amber Love Begonia is considered toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.

Like most begonias, it contains irritating compounds, particularly soluble oxalates, which are mainly concentrated in the tubers and roots. If ingested, these substances can cause mouth irritation, nausea, vomiting, or excessive drooling.

In cats and dogs, even a small ingested amount can be enough to trigger unpleasant digestive symptoms. Toxicity is generally considered moderate, but a veterinary consultation is necessary if symptoms appear.

What precautions should you take on a daily basis?

Place your Amber Love Begonia out of reach of curious pets and young children. A wall shelf or a tall piece of furniture are simple and effective solutions.

With a few placement precautions, the Amber Love Begonia can coexist perfectly in a home with pets and children.

Why are the leaves of my Amber Love Begonia turning yellow?

The leaves of the Amber Love Begonia most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is usually caused by too much water, which can lead to the roots beginning to rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small pale spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

The Amber Love Begonia is particularly sensitive to moisture sitting around the base of the stem: if the lower leaves turn yellow first, check that the base of the stem is not sitting in overly compacted soil or a saucer that hasn't been emptied.

Important tip 🌿It is perfectly normal for one or two old leaves to turn yellow from time to time. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the new growth.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, choose our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and safe for the plant.

When and how should I repot my Amber Love Begonia?

The Amber Love Begonia is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots grow out through the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

After receiving your Amber Love Begonia, allow it 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate before considering repotting. This period allows it to gradually adapt to its new light and humidity environment.

Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our premium potting mixes made in France, designed for drainage, aeration, and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compact, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Begonia Amber Love?

The Amber Love Begonia should be fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative resting period.

Properly balanced fertilization promotes:

  • denser, more vibrant foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and greater plant resilience.

The Amber Love Begonia particularly benefits from potassium and phosphorus, which enhance the characteristic coppery color of its asymmetrical foliage.

👉 For best results, we recommend our concentrated liquid fertilizer for tropical plants, which is easy to dose and delivers quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry soil: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How to properly water my Amber Love Begonia?

Water the Amber Love Begonia when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.

How to know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.

Unlike many tropical plants, the Amber Love Begonia does not tolerate water on its leaves: always water directly at the base of the plant to prevent spots and fungal diseases on the copper-colored foliage.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.

How do I propagate my Amber Love Begonia?

The Amber Love Begonia can be propagated by stem or whole leaf with petiole, ideally in spring or early summer when growth is active.

Stem propagationTake a healthy 8 to 10 cm stem with at least one node and two leaves. Use our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut that limits the risk of infection.

  1. Cut cleanly below a node, remove the lower leaves and let the cut dry for 30 minutes before planting.
  2. Place the cutting in our clear pots to monitor root development, filled with a light and moist growing medium.
  3. Place the cutting in a bright area away from direct sunlight, at a temperature of at least 20°C, with high ambient humidity.

You can also place the cutting on live sphagnum moss, which maintains constant moisture and promotes rooting. For transplanting, use our all-purpose growing medium enriched with essential components.

Important tip 🌿The first roots generally appear in 3 to 5 weeks. The cutting is ready to transplant when the roots are 2 to 3 cm long.

The essentials regarding Amber Love Begonia

Bégonia Amber Love: identity and origin

The Bégonia Amber Love, a hybrid from the Begoniaceae family, is a variety selected for its rich copper and golden tones. Derived from hybrid lineages developed from strains from Southeast Asia and tropical America, this house begonia stands out for its characteristic asymmetrical foliage, with amber highlights that change depending on the ambient light. The Begoniaceae family includes more than 2,000 listed species.

Bégonia care: light, watering and substrate

The Bégonia appreciates bright indirect light, ideally within two meters of an east- or west-facing window. Allow the substrate to dry out thoroughly between waterings: this begonia does not tolerate excess moisture well. Always water at the base, without wetting the leaves. Use our universal substrate enriched with biostimulants, light and well-draining, for healthy root growth.

Where to place your Bégonia for vibrant copper foliage?

  • Light: bright and indirect, east or west window.
  • Distance from window: 50 cm to 1.5 m maximum.
  • Temperature: between 18 and 24°C, away from drafts.
  • Insufficient light: our full-spectrum grow light effectively compensates for the lack of natural light in autumn and winter.

Frequently asked questions: why are the leaves of my Bégonia Amber Love covered in spots?

Spots on the leaves of the Bégonia Amber Love are most often caused by direct spraying on the foliage or excess stagnant moisture. This begonia is particularly sensitive to fungal diseases when water remains in contact with its asymmetrical leaves. Always water at the base, maintain good ventilation and avoid overly cold locations. Wait 2 to 3 weeks after delivery before repotting, to allow the plant to acclimate peacefully.
