About
Calathea Whitestar: white and pink splashes on every leaf
The Calathea Whitestar is a horticultural variety generally related to Calathea majestica, a species from the forests of South America. Its long, deep green paddle-shaped leaves are streaked with irregular white and pale pink bands that follow the veins. No two leaves have exactly the same pattern, and their purplish undersides add a touch of color in the evening, when the plant raises its foliage. Its upright and airy habit makes it a very bright Calathea, which lights up a corner of the room.
Foliage: evergreen, long deep green leaves streaked with white and pink, purplish undersides.
Light: bright and indirect, more generous than for a green Calathea, without direct sun.
Watering: slightly moist soil in spring and summer, soft water.
Pets: non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA).
Location: living room or bright bedroom, away from radiators.
Packaging: 1 plant in a 19 cm pot, 50 to 70 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.
Unique variegated foliage, safe for your pets, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Calathea majestica 'Whitestar' - Peacock plant - 19cm pot - Height 50-70cm
Is the Calathea Whitestar toxic to cats?
No, Calathea whitestar is not toxic to cats or dogs. The ASPCA, the leading American authority on animal toxicology, classifies Calathea as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. You can therefore place it in a room frequented by your pets. However, cats like to nibble on the long, moving leaves: in addition to damage to the foliage, swallowing a large quantity can cause mild digestive upset.
How big does an adult Calathea Whitestar get?
According to the Royal Horticultural Society, a mature Calathea Whitestar grows to about 60 cm tall and wide, sometimes slightly more in ideal conditions. Its paddle-shaped leaves can reach up to 30 cm in length. It grows moderately, especially during spring and summer. Our plant is delivered in a 19 cm pot and stands between 50 and 70 cm tall, already close to its adult size.
How to water a Calathea Whitestar in summer and winter?
In summer, water the Calathea Whitestar as soon as the top of the soil feels dry, usually once or twice a week, to keep the root ball slightly moist. In winter, let the top 2 or 3 centimeters dry out before watering, as the plant grows more slowly and is sensitive to overwatering. In both cases, use room-temperature rainwater or filtered water, and always empty the saucer after 15 minutes.
Does the Calathea Whitestar need a lot of light?
The Calathea Whitestar needs bright but indirect light, a little more than an all-green Calathea, because its white stripes do not produce energy. Place it within 1.5 m of an east or north window, or behind a sheer curtain to the south. Without enough light, it grows slowly and its new leaves are smaller. Direct sunlight, on the contrary, burns the most fragile white areas in a few hours.
Why are the white stripes on my Calathea Whitestar turning brown?
The white stripes of the Calathea Whitestar usually turn brown due to overly dry air or sunburn. Lacking chlorophyll, these areas are more delicate than the rest of the leaf and are the first to dry out. Increase the humidity around the pot, keep the plant away from radiators and direct sunlight, and water with soft water. The browned parts will not turn green again: cut them off cleanly with scissors.
When to repot a Calathea Whitestar?
Repot the Calathea Whitestar every 2 years, in spring, or when roots emerge from the drainage holes. Choose a pot with drainage holes that is 2 to 4 cm wider and a light potting mix, lightened with perlite. Handle the root ball gently, as the plant is sensitive to stress. This is also the time to divide it if it is very bushy: separate pieces with roots and leaves, then keep them warm and moist.
Calathea Whitestar or Stromanthe Triostar: how to tell them apart?
The Calathea Whitestar and Stromanthe Triostar are two variegated Marantaceae that are often confused. The Whitestar has large, deep green paddle-shaped leaves, striped with white and pale pink along the veins, with a purplish underside. The Triostar has narrower and pointier leaves, marbled with cream, green, and pink, with a very bright fuchsia pink underside. The Triostar also tolerates a little more light than the Whitestar.
The essentials about Calathea majestica 'Whitestar' - Peacock plant - 19cm pot - Height 50-70cm
Calathea Whitestar: characteristics and benefits
The Calathea Whitestar, sometimes spelled White Star, is a horticultural selection generally associated with Calathea majestica, a Marantaceae native to the humid forests of South America, from Colombia and Ecuador to Peru and northern Brazil. Kew botanists now classify this species in the genus Goeppertia (Goeppertia majestica), but it remains known everywhere as Calathea. Its oblong, paddle-shaped leaves measure up to 30 cm long. On a deep green background, they feature white and pale pink streaks that run from the central vein along the secondary veins, with a purplish underside. The Royal Horticultural Society gives it an adult size of approximately 60 cm high and wide, which matches our plant, delivered between 50 and 70 cm. Like all Calathea, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA.
Where to place the Calathea Whitestar? Light and location
The Calathea Whitestar requires slightly more light than an all-green Calathea, as its white areas do not contribute to photosynthesis. Place it within 1.5 m of an east- or north-facing window, or set back from a south-facing window fitted with a sheer blind. Its upright growth of 50 to 70 cm makes it ideal for the floor, on a plant stand or low piece of furniture, in a living room or bedroom. Keep it away from radiators and drafts. Pair it with our other Calathea to create a wall of contrasting foliage.
How to care for the Calathea Whitestar?
Watering: keep the soil slightly moist during the growing season; use rainwater or filtered water.
Light: bright and indirect, away from direct sunlight.
Temperature: 18 to 26°C, never below 15°C.
Humidity: around 60%, with a humidifier in winter.
Fertiliser: once a month in spring and summer, at half strength.
Why does each leaf of the Calathea Whitestar have a different pattern?
The variegation of the Calathea Whitestar is irregular by nature: the distribution of white and pink streaks varies from leaf to leaf, with some being very pronounced and others greener. This is what makes each plant unique. New leaves emerge rolled up, then reveal their pattern as they unfurl, often with pink hues that later fade. Good indirect light promotes well-contrasted leaves. Conversely, white streaks that turn brown indicate air that is too dry or sunburn, not a disease.
