About
Calathea ornata: fine pink stripes like brushstrokes
The Calathea ornata is a member of the Marantaceae family, native to the humid forests of Colombia and Venezuela. Its elliptical leaves, almost black and slightly glossy green, are adorned with fine pink stripes grouped in pairs, which radiate from the central vein like delicate brushstrokes. As they age, these stripes fade to a creamy white, and the underside of the leaves takes on a purple hue. Supported by long, upright petioles, they give the plant a slender and very elegant silhouette.
Foliage: evergreen, glossy dark green with fine pink stripes, purple underside.
Light: bright and indirect, protected from all direct sunlight.
Watering: keep the soil slightly moist, use soft, non-hard water.
Pets: non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA).
Location: living room, bedroom, or bright office, with air that is not too dry.
Packaging: 1 plant in a 19 cm pot, 75 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.
A slender and refined silhouette, safe for your pets, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Calathea ornata - Pink striped Calathea - 19cm pot - Height 75cm
Is Calathea ornata dangerous to cats and dogs?
No, Calathea ornata is not dangerous to cats and dogs. The ASPCA, the leading American authority on animal toxicology, classifies Calathea as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. It is therefore one of the colorful houseplants that can be kept around pets without worry. If your cat nibbles on its long leaves, it is more likely to damage them, with a mild digestive upset at worst.
How big can an indoor Calathea ornata grow?
Indoors, a Calathea ornata grows to about 60 cm to 1 m tall, with a slightly smaller width, as it has a fairly upright growth habit. Its leaves measure about twenty centimetres and are supported by long petioles. Its growth is slow to moderate: it produces a few new leaves in spring and summer. We deliver it already tall and full, in a 19 cm pot, at a height of 75 cm.
What water should I use to water a Calathea ornata?
The Calathea ornata should preferably be watered with rainwater, filtered or demineralized water, at room temperature. It is very sensitive to the lime, chlorine and fluoride in tap water, which cause the tips of its leaves to turn brown. If this is not possible, leave tap water to stand overnight in an open watering can. Water as soon as the top of the soil is dry, until it drains through, then empty the saucer thoroughly.
Does the Calathea ornata need a lot of light?
The Calathea ornata needs bright but always indirect light, a little more than other Calatheas, to maintain the pink in its stripes. Place it near an east- or north-facing window, or 2 m from a south-facing window with a sheer curtain. In a dark room, its stripes fade and it grows slowly. Direct sunlight, on the other hand, burns the leaves, leaving dry and discolored patches. Filtered light is the key.
Why are the tips of my Calathea ornata leaves turning brown?
Brown tips on a Calathea ornata are almost always caused by too dry air or too hard water. During the heating season, humidity drops below 40% and the leaf tips dry out. Set up a humidifier or a tray of damp clay pebbles and keep the plant away from radiators. Switch to rainwater or filtered water. Too much fertilizer can also burn the tips. Cut off the dry parts with scissors.
Can you propagate a Calathea ornata from a cutting?
No, Calathea ornata cannot be propagated by cuttings: a cut leaf or stem will not produce roots. It can only be propagated by dividing the clump in spring when repotting. Remove the plant from its pot, gently untangle the roots, and separate sections, each bearing several leaves and a piece of rhizome. Replant them in light, moist potting mix, then keep them warm and humid until they establish.
How can you tell the difference between Calathea ornata and Calathea Whitestar?
Both Calathea ornata and Calathea Whitestar have light stripes on a dark green background, but their patterns differ. The ornata has very fine, regular pink stripes, grouped in pairs, on fairly small, glossy leaves. The Whitestar has longer leaves, streaked with irregular white and pale pink bands, different on each leaf. The ornata is a botanical species, while the Whitestar is a horticultural variety.
The essentials about Calathea ornata - Pink striped Calathea - 19cm pot - Height 75cm
Calathea ornata: characteristics and benefits
The Calathea ornata grows wild in Colombia and Venezuela, in the undergrowth of humid forests. It is instantly recognizable by its very fine pink stripes, arranged in pairs on either side of the central vein, on dark green, slightly glossy elliptical leaves. This graphic pattern has earned it the nickname "pinstripe calathea" among English speakers, the Calathea with fine stripes. The underside of young leaves is purple, a color that can be seen in the evening when the plant raises its foliage, like all Marantaceae. Its leaves are held by long, slender petioles, giving it a tall, vertical shape. Kew botanists now classify it in the Goeppertia genus(Goeppertia ornata), but it remains known everywhere as Calathea. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA.
Where to place the Calathea ornata? Light and location
The Calathea ornata needs bright indirect light to maintain a beautiful contrast: near an east or north-facing window, or set back from a south-facing window protected by a sheer curtain. Its 75 cm vertical silhouette is well suited to a living room corner, next to a sofa, or on a low stand in a bedroom. Absolutely avoid radiators, stoves, and cold drafts. Pair it with our other Calathea plants to play with contrasting patterns.
How to care for the Calathea ornata?
Watering: keep the soil slightly moist, use rainwater or filtered water.
Light: bright and indirect, without direct sunlight.
Temperature: 18 to 26°C, stable and away from drafts.
Humidity: around 60%, with a humidifier in winter.
Fertilizer: once a month from April to September, at half strength.
Why do the pink stripes of the Calathea ornata turn white?
It is normal for the stripes of the Calathea ornata to gradually change from bright pink to creamy white with age: the youngest leaves are the most colorful, while the oldest fade. If all the leaves lose their pink color, or if the new ones emerge dull, the plant is generally lacking light. Move it closer to a window, without direct sunlight. Stripes that turn yellow or brown, on the other hand, indicate sunburn or water that is too hard.
