About
Calathea Medallion: round leaves painted like medallions
The Calathea Medallion is a horticultural variety of Calathea roseopicta, a species from the Brazilian Amazon. Its wide, rounded leaves appear to be hand-painted: a pale green center crossed by the vein, a feathery dark green pattern, a silvery line, and then a green border. The underside, a velvety burgundy purple, is revealed in the evening when the plant straightens its leaves. Its dense, even, rounded shape makes it one of the most decorative Calatheas to place on the floor or on a low piece of furniture.
Light: bright and indirect to partial shade, never direct sunlight.
Watering: keep the soil slightly moist, use soft water, and do not overwater.
Pets: non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA).
Location: living room, bedroom, or bright bathroom, away from heating.
Packaging: 1 plant in a 19 cm pot, 75 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.
Exquisite foliage, safe for your pets, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Calathea roseopicta 'Medallion' - Medallion Calathea - 19cm Pot - Height 75cm
Is the Calathea Medallion toxic to pets?
No, the Calathea Medallion is not toxic to pets. The ASPCA, the American authority on animal toxicology, classifies Calatheas as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. You can therefore place it on the floor, at cat or dog height, without danger. Its large leaves sometimes attract playful cats: in case of heavy nibbling, a slight temporary digestive upset remains possible.
How large does an adult Calathea Medallion get?
An adult Calathea Medallion forms a rounded clump approximately 60 to 80 cm tall, including the pot, and nearly as wide. Its rounded leaves can reach 20 to 25 cm in length. It has moderate growth, bushier mainly in spring and summer as it produces new leaves from the centre of the clump. Ours is delivered fully grown and bushy, in a 19 cm pot, with a height of 75 cm.
How to properly water a Calathea Medallion?
Water the Calathea Medallion as soon as the top 2 or 3 centimeters of soil are dry, using rainwater, filtered, or rested water at room temperature. Pour the water at the base, without flooding the center of the clump, until it drains, then empty the saucer. In summer, this often means watering once a week. In winter, space out watering more, as cold, waterlogged soil will rot its roots.
Can the Calathea Medallion tolerate a dimly lit room?
Yes, the Calathea Medallion can tolerate a dimly lit room for a while, as it naturally grows on the floor of the Amazon rainforest. It looks good at a distance of 2 or 3 m from a window. However, in a really dark corner, its patterns become blurred and it stops growing. Direct sunlight is just as harmful: it burns the pale green areas of its leaves. Bright light filtered through a sheer curtain remains ideal.
Why are the leaves of my Calathea Medallion falling off?
Wilting or falling Calathea Medallion leaves are often a sign of roots damaged by overwatering. Check the root ball: if it is waterlogged and smells musty, let it dry and repot if necessary in fresh, well-draining potting mix. If the soil is dry, the plant is simply thirsty: water thoroughly. A cold snap below 15°C or a draft can also cause its stems to droop.
How to divide and propagate a Calathea Medallion?
The Calathea Medallion can only be propagated by division in spring, as its leaves and stems do not root as cuttings. Remove the plant from its pot, then divide the clump into two or three sections, each with several leaves and a well-rooted piece of rhizome. Replant them in a light, moist potting mix, cover them with a ventilated clear bag, or place them in a very humid, warm room with bright, indirect light.
Calathea Medallion or Calathea orbifolia: what’s the difference?
Both Calathea medallion and Calathea orbifolia have large, round leaves, but their patterns are completely different. Medallion features a multi-toned pattern, pale green in the centre, feathery dark green and silver-edged, with a burgundy-purple underside. Orbifolia has larger, silver-green leaves striped with dark green bands, with a pale green underside. Medallion also forms a more compact clump.
The essentials about Calathea roseopicta 'Medallion' - Medallion Calathea - 19cm Pot - Height 75cm
Calathea Medallion: characteristics and benefits
The Calathea Medallion is a horticultural selection of Calathea roseopicta, a Marantaceae from northwestern Brazil in the Amazon basin, where it grows close to the ground in humid forests. The species received the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit as a houseplant. The 'Medallion' variety gets its name from its broad, almost round leaves, whose pattern resembles a finely crafted medallion: a pale green center around the vein, a dark green area with feathery edges, a fine silver border, and then a solid green margin. Each shade blends into the next. The underside of the leaves, a velvety burgundy purple, appears in the evening when the plant raises its foliage. Kew botanists now classify this species in the genus Goeppertia (Goeppertia roseopicta), but it remains known everywhere as Calathea. It is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA.
Where to place the Calathea Medallion? Light and location
The Calathea Medallion likes bright filtered light or bright partial shade, 1.5 to 2.5 m from an east, west, or north-facing window. Its rounded, compact habit makes it perfect on the floor next to a sofa, on a low piece of furniture, or at the foot of a bed, anywhere its leaves can be admired from above. A bright bathroom provides the humidity it enjoys. Keep it away from direct sunlight, radiators, and frequently opened doors. Pair it with our other Calatheas to mix round leaves with striped leaves.
How to care for the Calathea Medallion?
Watering: slightly moist soil, never waterlogged, soft water.
Light: bright filtered light to bright partial shade, without direct sunlight.
Temperature: 18 to 27°C, never below 15°C.
Humidity: 50 to 60%, higher during the heating season.
Fertilizer: once a month in spring and summer, at half strength.
Is the Calathea Medallion difficult to grow?
The Calathea Medallion is not difficult to grow, provided three simple rules are followed. First: soft water, rainwater, or filtered water, as lime stains the tips of the leaves. Second: moist but never waterlogged soil, as its dense clump is susceptible to stem rot. Third: bright light without direct sunlight, away from dry heat sources. If given these conditions, it regularly produces new leaves in spring and summer and remains decorative all year round.
