Calathea warscewiczii: the velvet of the tropical forest
The Calathea warscewiczii, nicknamed the velvet calathea, is a member of the Marantaceae family native to the humid forests of Central America, from Nicaragua to Panama. Its long, deep green leaves have a unique velvety feel and feature a light green herringbone pattern on either side of the central vein. Light: bright, indirect light to partial shade; never direct sunlight.
Watering: keep the soil consistently slightly moist; use lukewarm water.
Pets: non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA).

Everything you need to know about Calathea warscewiczii - Calathea velours - 19cm pot - Height 70cm
Is Calathea warscewiczii toxic to cats and dogs?
No, Calathea warscewiczii is not toxic to cats and dogs. The ASPCA, the leading American authority on animal toxicology, classifies Calathea as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. So you can place it in a home with pets without worry. A cat that chews on a lot of leaves might still experience mild, temporary digestive upset, and the damaged leaves will ruin the look.
How large can a Calathea warscewiczii grow?
Indoors, a Calathea warscewiczii generally grows to be 60 cm to 1.2 m tall and just as wide, depending on the light and humidity it receives. Its leaves can exceed 30 cm in length. Its growth is moderate: it produces new leaves from the center of the clump, especially in spring and summer. We deliver it already well-developed and bushy, in a 19 cm pot, at a height of 70 cm.
How to water a Calathea warscewiczii?
Water the Calathea warscewiczii as soon as the top 2 centimeters of soil are dry, keeping the root ball slightly moist without ever letting it become waterlogged. Pour water until it drains out, then empty the saucer. Use rainwater, filtered water, or water that has sat out overnight at room temperature if possible: lime and chlorine cause the tips to turn brown. Water about once a week in summer, and slightly less often in winter.
Where to place a Calathea warscewiczii in the house?
Place the Calathea warscewiczii in a bright room, 1.5 to 2 m from a window, away from direct sunlight that burns and dulls its velvety leaves. An east- or north-facing window is ideal, or a south-facing window protected by a sheer curtain. Keep it away from radiators, air conditioners, and drafts. A living room or bedroom with sufficient humidity is better suited to it than a cold entryway.
Why are the leaves of my Calathea warscewiczii curling?
Calathea warscewiczii leaves curling into horn shapes most often indicate thirst or overly dry air. The plant does this to reduce evaporation. Feel the soil: if it is dry deep down, water thoroughly. If it is moist, the air is the problem, often due to heating: increase humidity with a humidifier or wet clay pebbles. Too intense sunlight can also trigger this reflex.
Does the Calathea warscewiczii flower indoors?
Yes, the Calathea warscewiczii can flower indoors, which is rare among Calatheas. Its white to cream flowers are clustered in a short cone-shaped spike, whose bracts turn from cream-white to pink over time. Flowering mainly appears on mature plants, well lit, in a warm and humid environment, with a light fertilizer in spring. Cut the spike at the base once it has faded.
How to divide a Calathea warscewiczii?
Calathea warscewiczii cannot be propagated by cuttings: it is propagated by dividing the clump in spring at the time of repotting. Remove the root ball, then separate by hand or with a clean knife pieces containing at least two or three leaves and healthy roots. Replant each piece in light, moist potting mix, then keep it warm, in bright shade and in a very humid environment for a few weeks.
The essentials about Calathea warscewiczii - Calathea velours - 19cm pot - Height 70cm
Calathea warscewiczii: characteristics and benefits
The Calathea warscewiczii is a Marantaceae native to the humid undergrowth of Central America, found from Nicaragua to Panama via Costa Rica. It is nicknamed Calathea velours, or “jungle velvet” in English, because of the exceptional texture of its leaves: their upper surface is soft as velvet, while their purple underside is covered in a fine fuzz. The long leaves with wavy edges are very dark green, with a serrated light green band following the central vein like a fishbone. Another distinctive feature is that it sometimes produces flower spikes indoors, made up of cream bracts that turn pink. Kew botanists now classify it in the Goeppertia genus(Goeppertia warszewiczii), but it remains known everywhere as Calathea. Like all Calatheas, it is non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA.
Where to place the Calathea warscewiczii? Light and location
The Calathea warscewiczii likes bright filtered light or bright partial shade, 1.5 to 2 m from an east or north-facing window, or behind a sheer curtain to the south. At 70 cm tall upon delivery, it can be placed on the floor or on a stool in a living room, bedroom, or bright office. Avoid placing it near a radiator or a frequently opened door: dry air and cold drafts quickly damage its leaves. Pair it with our other Calatheas to create a jungle corner with varied textures.
How to care for the Calathea warscewiczii?
Watering: keep the root ball slightly cool; use soft water at room temperature.
Light: bright and indirect, with no direct sunlight.
Temperature: 18 to 27°C, never below 16°C.
Humidity: at least 60%, ideally with a humidifier.
Fertilizer: once a month from April to September, at half strength.
Should you mist the Calathea warscewiczii?
It is best to avoid misting the Calathea warscewiczii directly. Its velvety leaves trap water droplets, which leave light-colored spots as they dry and can encourage fungi if water sits. To provide the humidity it needs, place the pot on a tray of damp clay pebbles, group it with other plants, or place a humidifier nearby, especially in winter when heating dries out the air. If you still want to mist, aim for the air around the plant rather than the foliage.
