About

Calathea zebrina: the zebra plant with large leaves

The Calathea zebrina, nicknamed the zebra plant, comes from the Atlantic forests of southeastern Brazil. Its large oval leaves, among the largest of the genus, are striped with light green and dark green bands that follow the veins, like a zebra's coat. Their surface is velvety and their underside purplish-red. Vigorous, it forms a generous clump and folds its leaves upwards every evening, like all prayer plants.

  • Foliage: evergreen, large velvety striped leaves, purplish-red underside.
  • Light: bright and indirect to partial shade, without direct sun.
  • Watering: soil always fresh, soft water, never standing water.
  • Animals: non-toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA).
  • Location: living room, bedroom or bright bathroom, sheltered from drafts.
  • Packaging: 1 plant in a 19 cm pot, 75 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.

A large and graphic tropical clump, safe for your animals, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know about Calathea zebrina - Zebra plant - 19cm pot - Height 75cm

Is Calathea zebrina, the zebra plant, toxic to cats?

No, Calathea zebrina is not toxic to cats or dogs. The ASPCA, the leading authority on animal toxicology, classifies Calathea as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Be careful not to confuse it with another “zebra plant,” Aphelandra squarrosa, or with the zebra Haworthia, which are different plants. A cat that nibbles on a lot of leaves may experience mild, temporary digestive upset.

How tall does an adult Calathea zebrina grow?

An adult Calathea zebrina generally reaches 60 cm to 1 m tall indoors, with a similar width and leaves approximately 40 cm long. It is one of the largest species in the genus. Its growth is moderate to fairly rapid in spring and summer, when the light and humidity are right for it. We deliver it already very full, in a 19 cm pot at a height of 75 cm, ready to make an impression.

How often should I water a Calathea zebrina?

Water the Calathea zebrina as soon as the surface of the soil feels dry, which is often twice a week in summer and once a week in winter, depending on the temperature of the room. Its large leaves evaporate a lot of water, so the root ball should never dry out completely. Conversely, standing water causes root rot: always empty the saucer. Rainwater or water with low mineral content helps prevent brown tips.

Can the Calathea zebrina live in a low-light room?

Yes, the Calathea zebrina tolerates a low-light room better than most Calatheas, as it naturally grows in the undergrowth. It looks beautiful 2 or 3 m from a window. In a really dark corner, its growth slows down and its stripes lose their contrast. However, it cannot tolerate direct sunlight, which discolors and burns its leaves. Bright filtered light remains ideal for it.

Why are the leaves of my Calathea zebrina turning yellow?

Yellowing Calathea zebrina leaves are most often caused by overwatering: the soil remains waterlogged and the roots suffocate. Let the surface dry before watering and empty the saucer. If only the oldest lower leaves yellow one by one, this is normal renewal. Yellowing accompanied by fine webbing on the underside of the leaves indicates spider mites: shower the plant and increase the humidity.

When and how to repot a Calathea zebrina?

Repot the Calathea zebrina every 2 years in spring when the roots fill the pot. Choose a container that is wider than it is deep and has drainage holes, as its rhizomes spread across the surface. Use a light, rich potting mix with added perlite, and water immediately after. This is also a good time to divide a large clump: separate sections with roots and several leaves, then replant them separately.

What is the difference between Calathea zebrina and Calathea warscewiczii?

Both Calathea zebrina and Calathea warscewiczii have velvety leaves with purple undersides, but their patterns differ. The zebrina has alternating light and dark green bands that follow every vein on its oval, flat leaves. The warscewiczii has a very dark green background with a light, ribbed pattern along the single central vein and wavy edges. The zebrina is from Brazil, while the warscewiczii is from Central America.

The essentials about Calathea zebrina - Zebra plant - 19cm pot - Height 75cm

Calathea zebrina: characteristics and benefits

The Calathea zebrina is one of the earliest cultivated Calathea in Europe: it was described at the beginning of the 19th century from plants brought from Brazil. It grows wild in the humid forests of the northeast, southeast and south of the country. Its nickname as a zebra plant comes from its oval and pointed leaves, about 40 cm long, striped with light green and dark green bands that follow the veins. Their surface is velvety, their underside reddish-purple. It is a vigorous species that forms a full, wider and bushier clump than most Calathea. It is non-toxic to animals according to the ASPCA. Kew botanists now classify it in the genus Goeppertia (Goeppertia zebrina), but it remains known everywhere as Calathea. Its flowers, small and white to purple, remain hidden at the base of the foliage and rarely appear indoors.

Where to place the Calathea zebrina? Light and location

The Calathea zebrina tolerates partial shade better than many Calathea: a moderately lit room, 2 or 3 m from a window, is enough for it. However, it shows its best colours in bright filtered light, never in direct sunlight. At 75 cm upon delivery and with a spreading habit, allow it an open floor space in a living room, bedroom or bright bathroom. Pair it with our other Calathea to vary the patterns and shades of green.

How to care for the Calathea zebrina?

  • Watering: keep the soil consistently moist, use soft water at room temperature.
  • Light: partial shade to bright filtered light, without direct sunlight.
  • Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, never below 15 °C.
  • Humidity: around 60%, especially during the heating season.
  • Fertiliser: every 3 to 4 weeks in spring and summer, at half strength.

Why does the Calathea zebrina close its leaves in the evening?

The Calathea zebrina straightens and folds its leaves at dusk, then unfolds them again in the morning. This movement, called nyctinasty, is common to the entire Marantaceae family, hence their nickname as prayer plants. It is controlled by a small swelling at the base of each leaf, the pulvinus, which changes in volume depending on the light. It is therefore a sign of good health. If the leaves remain upright or curled during the day, the plant is likely lacking water or humidity, or receiving too much sun.
