About
Dracaena Marginata Magenta, the dragon tree with purple highlights
The Dracaena Marginata Magenta, also known as the magenta dragon tree, purple-edged dragon tree, or simply the magenta dragon tree, is native to Madagascar. Belonging to the Asparagaceae family, it can reach several meters in height in its natural environment, although indoors it grows more compactly, generally between 1 and 2 meters. Its slender growth habit and long, arching blade-shaped leaves, edged with an intense purple-magenta border, give it an immediately recognizable silhouette among house plants.
This set of two specimens in 17 cm pots offers a structured plant presence, ideal for decorating a corner, hallway, or contemporary living room. The magenta dragon tree has the remarkable ability to gradually lose its lower leaves, leaving only an airy crown at the top, creating a very decorative mini-palm tree appearance over time. Its two-tone colors, blending deep green and bright magenta, bring a unique chromatic touch all year round.
Order this duo of Dracaena Magenta today and receive two beautiful plants ready to transform your interior, delivered directly to your home.

Everything you need to know about Dracaena Magenta - Dragon Tree - Set of 2 Plants - 17cm Pot - Height 70-80cm
What light exposure is best for my Magenta Dracaena?
The Dracaena Marginata Magenta prefers bright indirect light, ideally near an east or west-facing window.
In its natural environment in Madagascar, it grows under the partial cover of other plants, which explains its tolerance to moderate light. However, for its magenta highlights to remain intense, a good dose of natural light is essential. The lower the light, the more its purple hues fade to a dull green.
In summer, move it 50 cm away from a south-facing window to prevent leaf scorch. In winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for the shorter days. An east-facing window remains ideal all year round.
Important tip 🌿The magenta dragon tree is particularly sensitive to cold drafts near windows in winter: make sure the window is well insulated. For dimly lit rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for indoor plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is the Magenta Dracaena toxic to pets and children?
The Dracaena Marginata Magenta is considered toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.
According to established botanical data, the dragon tree contains steroidal saponins, natural compounds found in its leaves and stem that cause irritation of the mucous membranes if ingested. These substances are particularly problematic for cats, in whom they can cause more severe poisoning than in dogs.
If ingested by an animal, possible symptoms include vomiting, hypersalivation, lethargy, dilated pupils in cats and, more rarely, coordination problems. These symptoms warrant a prompt veterinary consultation.
What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?
Place your magenta dragon tree in a room that your pets do not have free access to, or at a sufficient height so that it is out of reach. Due to its slender stature, placing it on a tall piece of furniture or in a closed hallway is often the simplest solution.
With a few placement precautions, the Dracaena Marginata Magenta can perfectly coexist with pets in your home with complete peace of mind.
Why are the leaves of my Magenta Dracaena turning yellow?
Magenta Dracaena leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
A particular characteristic of the Magenta Dracaena is its high sensitivity to fluoride in tap water and salt from improperly dosed fertilizers. If the tips of the leaves turn brown before yellowing, this is often a sign of water that is too hard or contains too much fluoride, rather than a root problem.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
The Dracaena Marginata Magenta is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots emerge through the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the substrate compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
The magenta dragon tree likes to be slightly snug in its pot: a container that is too large promotes water stagnation around the roots and increases the risk of rot, which must be absolutely avoided with this species.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, imperatively equipped with drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping it if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of substrate, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help the substrate settle. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Magenta Dracaena?
Fertilize the Magenta Dracaena Marginata every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's dormant period.
Properly dosed fertilizer promotes:
denser, more vibrant foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resilience.
The magenta dragon tree is sensitive to high concentrations of mineral salts: always dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended dose to prevent the leaf tips from turning brown, a characteristic of this species.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry soil: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Magenta Dracaena?
Water the Dracaena Marginata Magenta when the soil has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 20 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the soil. If the soil is dry, it is time to water.
Unlike many tropical plants, the magenta dragon tree tolerates fluoride-rich tap water very poorly: always prefer filtered water, rainwater, or water left to stand for 24 hours in an open container to reduce the characteristic browning of the leaf tips.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Magenta Dracaena?
The Dracaena Marginata Magenta is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring between April and June, when the plant's vitality is at its maximum.
Stem cutting with nodesChoose a healthy stem at least 10 to 15 cm long with 2 to 3 nodes. Cut cleanly just below a node using our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a precise cut without crushing the tissues.
Take the cutting by cutting cleanly below a node. Remove the lower leaves, keeping only the top 2 to 3.
Place the cutting in a warm location (22 to 25 °C), in bright indirect light, away from drafts. High ambient humidity speeds up root formation.
Rooting in water is possible and allows you to monitor root growth in real time. Once the roots reach 3 to 4 cm, transplant into our universal potting mix enriched with essential nutrients, well-draining and suitable for dragon trees.
Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the temperature and light. The first signs of success are the appearance of new small leaves at the top of the cutting, indicating that the roots are active.
The essentials about Dracaena Magenta - Dragon Tree - Set of 2 Plants - 17cm Pot - Height 70-80cm
Dracaena Marginata Magenta: identity and origin
The Dracaena Marginata Magenta, commonly known as the magenta dragon tree or dragon tree with purple-edged leaves, is an indoor plant native to Madagascar, belonging to the Asparagaceae family. In its natural state, this species can reach a height of 5 to 6 meters. Its most remarkable feature is its foliage of long, narrow blades, dark green in the center and edged with a bright magenta border, which gives it a strong visual presence and a natural architectural form.
Dracaena care: light, watering and substrate
The Dracaena appreciates bright indirect light to maintain the intensity of its magenta hues. It tolerates partial shade, but its colors fade significantly then. Water sparingly and wait until the substrate is thoroughly dry between waterings. The dragon tree is very sensitive to fluoride: prefer filtered or rainwater. For repotting, opt for our universal substrate enriched with beneficial fungi, ensuring optimal drainage and good root health.
Where to place your Dracaena for colorful and healthy foliage?
Bright light: east or west window, without direct midday sun.
Stable temperature: between 15 and 30 °C, away from drafts.
Strategic height: on a piece of furniture or on the floor, it naturally structures the space.
Dark room: our full-spectrum grow light compensates for the lack of natural light and preserves the purple brilliance of the foliage.
Frequently asked questions: why do the tips of my Dracaena's leaves turn brown?
The browning of the tips of the Dracaena Marginata Magenta is almost always related to the quality of the watering water. This species is particularly sensitive to fluoride and chlorine present in tap water, which accumulate in the leaf tissues and cause this characteristic necrosis at the tips. Use filtered water or rainwater to eliminate this problem. Too dry air or too strong fertilizer dosage can also cause the same symptoms on this plant. Wait 2 to 3 weeks after receipt before any repotting, to allow the plant to acclimate to its new environment.
