About
Dracaena Sunray, the dragon tree with luminous, architectural foliage
The Dracaena Sunray, also known as the dragon tree, is a cultivated variety of Dracaena fragrans native to the tropical and subtropical forests of Central and West Africa, particularly Cameroon and Sudan. This houseplant with bright green and yellow striped foliage belongs to the Asparagaceae family and can grow several meters tall in its natural habitat. Our Dracaena Sunray is offered in a set of 2 plants, in a 17 cm pot, with a height of 70 to 75 cm: an immediately striking plant duo.
What immediately stands out about this dragon tree is its long woody stem crowned with a tuft of ribbon-like leaves with golden and chartreuse highlights, giving each specimen a palm-like, sculptural silhouette. Its ability to maintain its upright form, even indoors for many years, makes it a remarkably stable and long-lasting decorative plant. The Dracaena Sunray is also known for its natural tolerance to dry environments, a valuable trait in heated interiors during winter.
Order your set of 2 Dracaena Sunray plants today and bring this touch of African tropical flair into your home: delivered to your door with care, they will instantly transform your living space.

Everything you need to know about Dracaena Sunray - Dragon Tree - Set of 2 Plants - 17cm Pot - Height 70-75cm
What light exposure is best for my Dracaena Sunray?
The Dracaena Sunray prefers bright, indirect light, protected from direct sunlight.
In its natural African habitat, it grows beneath the canopy of tropical forests, which gives it a good tolerance for moderate light. However, insufficient light leads to a gradual loss of its characteristic yellow and chartreuse bands, with the foliage becoming uniformly green.
In practice, place it near an east- or west-facing window, about 1 to 2 meters away from the glass. In summer, a light curtain protects its leaves from the midday sun. In winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for the decrease in natural light.
Important tip 🌿Avoid moving your Dracaena Sunray frequently: like all dragon trees, it can lose a few leaves during sudden changes in light or temperature. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for indoor plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is the Dracaena Sunray toxic to animals and children?
The Dracaena Sunray is considered toxic to cats and dogs, and potentially irritating to young children.
Its leaves contain steroidal saponins, natural compounds that disrupt the digestive system of felines and canines when they ingest pieces of leaves or stems. This toxicity is recognized and documented by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals).
In cats, the most common symptoms after ingestion are vomiting, hypersalivation, and temporary weakness. In dogs, the reactions are similar but generally less intense. These symptoms are not fatal but require a prompt veterinary consultation.
What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?
Place your Dracaena Sunray out of reach of pets and young children, preferably on a high surface or in a room accessible only to adults.
With proper placement precautions, this dragon tree can perfectly coexist with your pets and children without any risk on a daily basis.
Why are the leaves of my Dracaena Sunray turning yellow?
Dracaena Sunray leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by overwatering, which can lead to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-coloured spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
For the Dracaena Sunray, it is completely normal for the lowest and oldest leaves to gradually turn yellow before falling off: this is a natural renewal process that is part of the plant's cycle and should not cause concern, as long as the leaves at the top remain green and vigorous.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
The Dracaena Sunray is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots emerge through the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
The Dracaena Sunray grows relatively slowly and does not need to be repotted frequently: a well-established plant can remain in the same pot for 2 to 3 years without any issues, provided it is fertilized regularly during the growing season.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, and make sure it has drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently loosen the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in around it without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Dracaena Sunray?
Fertilize the Dracaena Sunray every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's dormant period.
Properly dosed fertilizer promotes:
denser, more vibrant foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resilience.
The Dracaena Sunray is particularly sensitive to excess fertilizer: over-fertilizing can cause the leaf tips to turn brown, a characteristic sign of mineral salt buildup in the potting mix. Always follow the recommended dosage and err on the side of under-fertilizing rather than over-fertilizing.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry soil: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Dracaena Sunray?
Water the Dracaena Sunray when the soil has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How to tell when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the soil. If the soil is dry, it is time to water.
The Dracaena Sunray is particularly sensitive to fluoride and chlorine found in tap water: preferably use filtered water, rainwater, or tap water left to stand for 24 hours in an open container, in order to limit the appearance of brown tips on the leaves.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Dracaena Sunray?
Dracaena Sunray is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in full vegetative growth.
Stem cutting propagationSelect a healthy stem at least 10 to 15 cm long. With our stainless steel straight-tip plant snips, make a clean, sharp cut just below a node. Allow the cut end to dry for a few hours before placing the cutting.
Prepare your stem cutting and allow it to callus over in the open air for 2 to 3 hours.
Place the cutting vertically in our clear pots to monitor root growth, filled with slightly moist potting mix or directly in a glass of warm water.
Place the cutting in a warm, bright location away from direct sunlight, at a temperature above 18°C, and cover it with a clear plastic bag to maintain humidity.
Important tip 🌿Dracaena Sunray usually takes 4 to 8 weeks to root. The first signs of success are the appearance of new small leaves at the top of the cutting or visible roots if you are using a clear container or a glass of water.
The essentials about Dracaena Sunray - Dragon Tree - Set of 2 Plants - 17cm Pot - Height 70-75cm
Dracaena Sunray (Dracaena fragrans 'Sunray'): identity and origin
The Dracaena Sunray, with its Latin name Dracaena fragrans 'Sunray', is a cultivated variety of the dragon tree native to the tropical forests of Central and West Africa, notably Cameroon, Sudan, and Ethiopia. Belonging to the Asparagaceae family, it stands out for its ribbon-like foliage with long yellow and chartreuse bands running the full length of the leaves, giving it a unique sunny and architectural appearance.
Dracaena care: light, watering, and substrate
The Dracaena appreciates bright indirect light and tolerates moderate light, provided it is never exposed to direct sunlight. Water moderately, only when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, and it requires water low in fluoride to prevent the tips from browning. Our universal substrate enriched with beneficial fungi guarantees optimal drainage and balanced growth.
Where to place your Dracaena for vibrant and long-lasting foliage?
Bright indirect light: east or west window, 1-2 m from the glass.
Temperature: between 18 and 27°C all year round, away from cold drafts.
Placement stability: avoid frequent moves, as it is sensitive to sudden changes.
Frequently asked questions: why do the tips of my Dracaena Sunray leaves turn brown?
The browning of the tips of the Dracaena Sunray is caused in the vast majority of cases by water that is too hard or too rich in fluoride. This sensitivity is a botanical characteristic specific to Dracaena fragrans: prefer filtered water or tap water left to stand for 24 hours. Too dry air in winter, due to heating, can also worsen the phenomenon. If you have just received your plant, give it 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate before drawing conclusions about its health.
