About
Hoya aff. Vitellina, the velvety porcelain of the forests of Borneo
Hoya aff. Vitellina, sometimes called Hoya velvet wax plant or simply Hoya Vitellina, is an epiphytic vine native to the humid tropical forests of Borneo, belonging to the Apocynaceae family. This refined species, still little described scientifically, stands out for its fleshy leaves with a slightly velvety texture, a deep green enhanced by pearlescent reflections on the upper surface.
Its oval foliage, thick and slightly shiny, has a well-marked central vein that gives it an immediately remarkable sculptural presence. Like all Hoyas, this climbing plant produces tendrils and naturally wraps around its supports, adopting over time a dense and generous architectural silhouette. Each leaf seems carved from the material, with an almost waxy consistency that recalls the finest rare species of the genus.
Our Hoya aff. Vitellina is available for delivery: order it now and add this botanical rarity to your collection of indoor plants.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Hoya aff. Vitellina
What light exposure is right for my Hoya aff. Vitellina?
The Hoya aff. Vitellina prefers bright, indirect light, within 2 meters of an east- or west-facing window.
In its natural habitat in Borneo, this epiphytic vine grows beneath the canopy of tropical rainforests, with sunlight filtered through the leaves of tall trees. Indoors, recreating this soft yet abundant light is essential to maintain the beauty of its velvety foliage and encourage the formation of flower umbels.
In summer, move it back slightly if the afternoon sun shines directly on the leaves. In winter, move it closer to the window to compensate for the reduced natural light. A south-facing position with a light curtain also works very well.
Important tip 🌿Too little light for several weeks completely prevents flowering and can cause new stems to become leggy. For rooms with low light, our grow light for houseplants faithfully mimics natural light without harmful UV rays.
Is Hoya aff. Vitellina toxic to animals and children?
Hoya aff. Vitellina is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.
Like all Hoya species, this plant contains no chemical compounds listed as hazardous by leading animal and human toxicology organizations. However, its milky sap, which is present in very small quantities, may cause mild skin irritation in people with sensitive skin during pruning or propagation.
If large quantities of leaves are ingested, young children or pets may experience mild digestive upset, although no severe toxicity has been documented for this genus.
What precautions should you take on a daily basis?
As a precaution, keep your Hoya aff. Vitellina out of reach of curious pets and young children, especially if you place it on an arch-shaped stake at an accessible height.
You can continue to enjoy this plant alongside your four-legged companions with complete peace of mind, as it is one of the safest indoor plants for households with pets.
Why are the leaves of my Hoya aff. Vitellina turning yellow?
Hoya aff. Vitellina leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is usually caused by overwatering, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
In Hoya aff. Vitellina, the characteristic velvety texture of the leaves can mask the early signs of spider mites: regularly inspect the undersides of the leaves with a magnifying glass, especially during winter when indoor air is drier.
Important tip 🌿One or two older leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
When and how should I repot my Hoya aff. Vitellina?
The Hoya aff. Vitellina is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out of the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the substrate compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
After receiving your Hoya aff. Vitellina, wait 2 to 3 weeks before repotting it: this acclimatization period allows it to adapt to its new environment without additional stress.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots to check root regrowth are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root regrowth without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of substrate, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the substrate. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Hoya aff. Vitellina?
The Hoya aff. Vitellina is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period.
A well-balanced supply promotes:
denser and well-colored foliage,
steady growth,
and better plant resistance.
In the Hoya aff. Vitellina, a regular supply of fertilizer during the growing period also stimulates flowering and the formation of flower stalks, which bear the characteristic umbels of the genus.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize in dry substrate: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How should I water my Hoya aff. Vitellina properly?
The Hoya aff. Vitellina should be watered when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 20 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How to know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it is time to water.
Thanks to its thick and fleshy leaves, the Hoya aff. Vitellina naturally stores water in its foliage, like succulent plants: this internal reserve allows it to get through periods of drought without damage, making it a plant that is particularly tolerant of missed waterings.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Hoya aff. Vitellina?
The Hoya aff. Vitellina is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer, when growth is active.
Preparing the cuttingSelect a healthy stem with at least 2 nodes and 2 leaves. Cut just below a node with our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut that limits the risk of infection. Allow the cut to callus for 1 to 2 hours in the open air before placing the cutting.
Prepare the cutting with a clean cut just below the node, and remove the lower leaves.
Place the cutting in a warm location (22-26 °C), in bright indirect light, with high ambient humidity.
Live sphagnum moss is the ideal rooting medium for Hoyas: it maintains constant moisture while allowing the roots to breathe. Once the roots are well developed (4 to 6 cm), transplant into our highly free-draining substrate formulated for Hoyas.
Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 4 to 8 weeks depending on the ambient temperature. The first signs of success are the appearance of new leaves and the slight resistance of the cutting when gently pulled.
The essentials regarding Hoya aff. Vitellina
Hoya aff. Vitellina: identity and origin
Hoya aff. Vitellina, known by the names Hoya velvet wax plant or Hoya Vitellina affinis, is an epiphytic vine in the Apocynaceae family, native to the humid tropical forests of Borneo. This rare form, which has yet to be fully described scientifically, is distinguished by its fleshy, velvety leaves, unique among commonly cultivated Hoyas. Renowned for its fragrant flower umbels and highly prized fragrance, it remains one of the most sought-after rarities of the genus.
Hoya care: light, watering and growing medium
Hoyas prefer bright indirect light, within 2 meters of a window. Infrequent watering is essential: wait until the growing medium is dry deep down before watering again, approximately every 2 weeks in summer. Use our highly free-draining growing medium formulated for Hoyas, enriched with biostimulants to promote root establishment and vigorous growth of the thick foliage.
Where to place your Hoya for optimal velvety foliage?
East or west window: ideal, providing soft light without direct sunlight.
Distance: less than 2 meters from the light source.
Temperature: between 18 and 28°C, away from drafts.
Humidity: 50 to 70% to preserve the velvety texture of the leaves.
Frequently asked questions: why isn't my Hoya aff. Vitellina flowering?
Hoya aff. Vitellina usually fails to flower due to insufficient light, overwatering, or inadequate fertilization. The flower stalks that bear the umbels only form when the plant receives at least 4 to 6 hours of bright indirect light per day. After delivery, allow 2 to 3 weeks for the plant to acclimate before repotting. Regular feeding with our liquid fertilizer formulated for Hoyas stimulates flower stalk formation from spring onwards.
