About

Hoya davidcummingii, the Star-Shaped Flowering Vine from the Philippines

Hoya davidcummingii, also known as David Cumming's Hoya or Philippine wax vine, is a tropical climbing plant native to the forests of Palawan Island in the Philippines. A member of the Apocynaceae family, this species produces dense, slightly fleshy foliage with deep green oval leaves that are often speckled with small silver spots.

What makes Hoya davidcummingii truly unique is its ability to produce compact, brightly colored flower umbels that range from orange to coral pink and red depending on growing conditions. Each perfectly symmetrical flower features a contrasting creamy-white center. The characteristic waxy texture of Hoyas gives its flowers and leaves an almost sculptural appearance, blurring the line between nature and decorative art.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Hoya davidcummingii

What light exposure is right for my Hoya davidcummingii?

The Hoya davidcummingii prefers bright, indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window.

In its natural habitat in Palawan, Philippines, it grows in the light shade of the forest canopy, which filters direct sunlight. Indoors, avoid afternoon sun exposure, which could yellow or burn its waxy leaves.

In summer, a light curtain in front of a south-facing window is enough to protect it. In winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for reduced sunlight and encourage the formation of flower umbels.

Important tip 🌿Prolonged lack of light prevents the Hoya davidcummingii from flowering and significantly slows its growth. For low-light rooms, our grow light for houseplants faithfully mimics natural light without harmful UV rays.

Is Hoya davidcummingii toxic to animals and children?

Hoya davidcummingii is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.

Like the vast majority of hoyas, this species does not contain any chemical compounds known to cause serious poisoning in pets or humans. It is not on the ASPCA list of toxic plants.

However, its fleshy foliage and sap may cause mild digestive irritation if ingested in large quantities, particularly by young children or curious pets.

What precautions should you take on a daily basis?

As a precaution, place your Hoya davidcummingii on a high surface or shelf out of reach of young children and pets that may chew on the leaves.

Overall, Hoya davidcummingii is a safe, family-friendly plant, making it a reassuring choice for decorating your home with peace of mind.

Why are the leaves of my Hoya davidcummingii turning yellow?

Hoya davidcummingii leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is usually caused by overwatering, which can lead to the early stages of root rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

Hoya davidcummingii stores water reserves in its thick, waxy leaves; therefore, a substrate that remains too wet for extended periods is the most common cause of yellowing in this species.

Important tip 🌿It is completely normal for one or two older leaves to turn yellow from time to time. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the new growth.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, choose our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and safe for the plant.

When and how should I repot my Hoya davidcummingii?

The Hoya davidcummingii is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots emerge through the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the growing medium compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

After receiving your Hoya davidcummingii, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering repotting: the plant needs to adapt to its new environment before any change of pot.

Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots to check for new root growth are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor new root growth without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our highly draining growing medium formulated for Hoyas, designed for aeration and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of growing medium, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the growing medium. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Hoya davidcummingii?

The Hoya davidcummingii should be fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, using a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative resting period, during which it prepares its flower stalks for the next season.

Properly balanced fertilization promotes:

  • denser, more vibrant foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and greater plant resilience.

The Hoya davidcummingii is a species native to forests poor in organic matter: careful, moderate fertilization is all that is needed for excellent results.

👉 For the best results, we recommend our liquid fertilizer specially formulated for Hoyas, which is easy to dose and delivers quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry potting mix: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How should I water my Hoya davidcummingii properly?

Water the Hoya davidcummingii when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.

How do you know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it is time to water.

Thanks to its thick, fleshy foliage, the Hoya davidcummingii stores water reserves in its leaves and tolerates short periods of drought well: it is better to water a little too late than too early.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.

How do I propagate my Hoya davidcummingii?

Hoya davidcummingii is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when growth is active.

Stem cutting methodSelect a healthy stem with at least 2 nodes and 2 to 3 leaves. Cut just below a node with our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean and neat cut that limits the risk of infection.

  1. Remove the lower leaves to leave at least one bare node. Let the cutting air dry for 1 to 2 hours so that the cut can callus over slightly.
  2. Place the cutting in our clear propagation pots, to visually monitor root development without disturbing the plant.
  3. Place in a warm, bright location away from direct sunlight, with an ideal temperature between 22 and 26°C.

To promote rooting, use live sphagnum moss as a rooting medium: it maintains constant moisture while allowing the roots to breathe. Once the roots are well-formed, transplant into our highly free-draining substrate formulated for Hoyas.

Important tip 🌿The first roots generally appear between 3 and 6 weeks. Maintain high ambient humidity around the cutting to speed up rooting.
