About
Hoya Deykeae, the tropical vine with velvety, silvery leaves
Hoya Deykeae, also known as the velvety wax vine or silver-leaved Hoya, is a tropical climbing plant native to the humid forests of the Philippines. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, this rare species develops long twining stems capable of clinging to any vertical support to reach several meters in natural conditions.
What makes Hoya Deykeae absolutely unique is its thick, fleshy foliage covered in a silvery fuzz, which gives it an almost surreal velvety appearance. Each leaf, oval and slightly domed, reflects the light subtly and changes appearance depending on the time of day. This particular botanical trait, linked to the presence of trichomes on the leaf epidermis, makes it a centerpiece in any interior space.
Our Hoya Deykeae is available for delivery throughout France. Order it today to add this rare vine, highly sought after by plant enthusiasts, to your collection.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Hoya Deykeae
What light exposure is right for my Hoya deykeae?
The Hoya deykeae prefers bright, indirect light, ideally within one meter of an east- or west-facing window.
In its natural Philippine habitat, it grows beneath the canopy of moist forests, which gives it a good tolerance for filtered light, but makes it highly sensitive to direct sunlight. Several hours of unfiltered sunlight can scorch its velvety foliage and bleach its silvery trichomes.
In summer, move it slightly away from the window or place a light sheer between it and the window from noon to 4 p.m. In winter, move it closer to the window to compensate for the reduced natural light, which can stunt its growth and delay the appearance of flower stalks.
Important tip 🌿Avoid north-facing rooms, where the light remains insufficient for this Hoya all year round. For dimly lit interiors, our full-spectrum grow light for houseplants faithfully mimics natural light without harmful UV rays.
Is Hoya deykeae toxic to pets and children?
Hoya deykeae is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children, making it a suitable plant for households with pets.
Hoyas do not contain calcium oxalate crystals or any alkaloid compounds known to be harmful to domestic mammals or humans. The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) classifies the Hoya genus as non-toxic to dogs and cats.
However, accidental ingestion of leaves or stems may cause mild digestive irritation or temporary vomiting, with no serious consequences.
What precautions should you take on a daily basis?
Although the plant is known to be safe, it is best to keep it out of reach of young children and curious pets to protect its delicate foliage and climbing stems.
Hoya deykeae can safely coexist with your four-legged companions and children, provided contact is kept to a reasonable minimum.
Why are my Hoya deykeae leaves turning yellow?
Hoya deykeae leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is usually caused by overwatering, which can lead to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
Hoya deykeae has fleshy foliage that allows it to store reserves: therefore, several leaves turning yellow quickly at the same time is a warning sign that should be addressed without delay, as the plant only shows symptoms once the problem is already well established.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
The Hoya deykeae is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots emerge from the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
The Hoya deykeae likes to be slightly snug in its pot: avoid choosing a container that is too large, as excess potting mix around the roots retains moisture and promotes rot. After receiving your plant, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before repotting, so as not to add additional stress.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, and make sure it has drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Hoya deykeae?
Fertilize the Hoya Deykeae every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative rest period.
Properly dosed fertilization promotes:
denser, more vibrant foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resilience.
The Hoya Deykeae particularly benefits from regular fertilization during its active growth period: its long climbing stems and thick foliage require a good supply of nutrients to develop fully and prepare for the formation of flower stalks.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry potting mix: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Hoya deykeae?
Water the Hoya deykeae when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 10 days in summer and every 15 to 20 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.
The Hoya deykeae naturally stores water in its fleshy leaves: this reserve allows it to survive periods without watering without suffering, making it a particularly forgiving plant for people who occasionally forget to water.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than too much, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Hoya deykeae?
The Hoya deykeae is propagated by stem cuttings with at least one node, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in full growth.
Preparing the cuttingSelect a healthy 10 to 15 cm stem with at least 2 nodes and 1 to 2 leaves. Remove the lower leaves so they are not buried. Use our stainless steel straight-tip plant snips for a clean cut without crushing the stem, just below a node.
Leave the cut to callus for 1 to 2 hours in the open air, then place the cutting in moist live sphagnum moss or in clear water, changing it every 5 days.
Place the cutting in one of our clear propagation pots to monitor root development without handling the plant.
Place the cutting in a warm, bright location away from direct sunlight, at a temperature above 20°C. Maintain high ambient humidity by covering it with a plastic bag or a cloche if possible.
Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on the ambient temperature. The first signs of success are the appearance of new leaves or slight resistance of the stem when gently pulled.
The essentials regarding Hoya Deykeae
Hoya Deykeae: identity and origin
Hoya Deykeae, also known as the velvety wax vine, is a tropical climbing plant (Hoya deykeae) native to the humid forests of the Philippines. This rare species from the Apocynaceae family is distinguished by its thick foliage covered in silvery trichomes that give it a unique velvety appearance. Like all Hoyas, it produces delicate flower umbels with a fragrant bloom, highly anticipated by collectors.
Hoya care: light, watering and substrate
Hoya Deykeae appreciates bright indirect light, no more than one meter from an east or west window. Its infrequent watering respects its fleshy foliage which naturally stores water. Use our highly draining substrate enriched with biostimulants formulated for Hoyas to ensure good root oxygenation and avoid stagnant moisture.
Where to place your Hoya to enjoy its velvety foliage?
East or west window: bright light without scorching direct sun.
Distance from window: 50 to 80 cm in summer, closer in winter.
Temperature: between 18 and 28°C, away from cold drafts.
Frequently asked questions: why doesn't my Hoya Deykeae flower?
Hoya Deykeae will not flower if the light is insufficient or if the flower stalks have been cut after a first flowering. To obtain flower umbels, place it in a very bright location and stop fertilizing in winter to respect its winter dryness and resting period. Never cut old flower stalks: the plant reuses them every season. After receipt, wait 2 to 3 weeks for acclimatization before any repotting.
