About

Hoya 'Lai Chau': rare and captivating foliage with a satiny, silvery sheen

Hoya 'Lai Chau', also known as Hoya sp. 'Lai Chau' or Vietnamese Hoya, is a tropical climbing plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to the montane forests of northern Vietnam near Lai Châu Province. This evergreen species produces thick, slightly fleshy leaves adorned with subtle silvery speckles on a deep green background.

It makes an instantly striking addition to any interior: each oval leaf has a satiny, velvety texture that gently catches the ambient light. Over time, its twining stems can grow generously long, making this rare Hoya a climbing or trailing plant with a distinctive decorative character. Its persistent flower stalks should never be removed, as new cycles of fragrant flower umbels develop on them year after year.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Hoya 'Lai Chau'

What light exposure is right for my Hoya 'Lai Chau'?

The Hoya 'Lai Chau' prefers bright indirect light, placed within one meter of an east- or west-facing window.

In its natural habitat in the mountains of northern Vietnam, it grows under partial cover, benefiting from filtered and consistent light. It tolerates partial shade, but insufficient light slows its growth and reduces the chances of obtaining a fragrant bloom.

In summer, a light veil protects its satin leaves from the direct rays of the midday sun. In winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for the decrease in natural light.

Important tip 🌿Direct midday sun between May and August can cause irreversible leaf scorch. Always prefer soft and consistent light. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for houseplants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.

Is Hoya 'Lai Chau' toxic to pets and children?

Hoya 'Lai Chau' is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children: the ASPCA classifies hoyas as non-toxic plants for pets.

Unlike many tropical houseplants, hoyas do not contain any known toxic compounds. They are regularly listed among the safest plants for homes with animals.

However, as with any plant, ingesting large quantities of leaves may cause mild, temporary digestive upset in sensitive animals.

What precautions should you take on a daily basis?

As a matter of common sense, keep Hoya 'Lai Chau' out of reach of overly curious animals and young children, for example by hanging it or placing it on a shelf: you will protect both the plant and your companions' digestive comfort.

Living with cats, dogs, and children is completely worry-free with this hoya, making it an excellent choice for homes with animals.

Why are the leaves of my Hoya 'Lai Chau' turning yellow?

Hoya 'Lai Chau' leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by overwatering, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

Hoya 'Lai Chau' has thick leaves that allow it to store reserves: rapid yellowing is often the first sign of too frequent watering in a poorly draining substrate.

Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the phenomenon spreads to the young leaves.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, opt for our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and plant-friendly.

When and how should I repot my Hoya 'Lai Chau'?

The Hoya 'Lai Chau' is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots emerge from the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the substrate compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

After receiving your Hoya 'Lai Chau', wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering repotting, so as not to add stress to the plant. The Hoya 'Lai Chau' likes to be slightly snug in its pot, which can even encourage blooming.

Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our highly draining substrate formulated for Hoyas, designed for oxygenation and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of substrate, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help the substrate settle. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Hoya 'Lai Chau'?

Fertilize the Hoya 'Lai Chau' every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative rest period.

Properly balanced fertilization promotes:

  • denser, more vibrant foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and greater plant resilience.

The Hoya 'Lai Chau' produces its fragrant flower umbels on persistent peduncles: regular application of suitable fertilizer during the active growing season helps stimulate future flowering cycles.

👉 For best results, we recommend our liquid fertilizer specially formulated for Hoyas; it is easy to dose and delivers quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry potting mix, as this can burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How to properly water my Hoya 'Lai Chau'?

Water the Hoya 'Lai Chau' when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 15 to 20 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.

How do you know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: push your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it's time to water.

Thanks to its thick and slightly fleshy leaves, the Hoya 'Lai Chau' naturally stores water reserves and tolerates a moderate period of drought between waterings very well, especially during its winter dormancy.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.

How do I propagate my Hoya 'Lai Chau'?

The Hoya 'Lai Chau' is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when growth is active.

Preparing the cuttingTake a healthy stem with at least 2 nodes and 1 to 2 leaves using our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut that limits the risk of infection. Remove the leaves from the lower node and let the cut dry for 1 to 2 hours before placing it in a rooting medium.

  1. Prepare the cutting with a clean cut below the lower node using the stainless steel pruning shears.
  2. Place the cutting in our clear pots to monitor root development, filled with moist sphagnum moss or a highly draining substrate.
  3. Place in a warm location (22 to 26 °C), bright without direct sunlight, and maintain slight humidity around the cutting.

For optimal rooting, we recommend using our live sphagnum moss which retains moisture while allowing good aeration. Once the roots are well developed, transplant into our highly draining substrate enriched with biostimulants for Hoyas.

Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 3 to 6 weeks. The first roots appear at the nodes. Success is confirmed when new leaves begin to develop.

The essentials regarding Hoya 'Lai Chau'

Hoya 'Lai Chau': identity and origin

Hoya 'Lai Chau', also known as Hoya sp. 'Lai Chau', is a tropical climbing plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to the montane forests of northern Vietnam, in the Lai Châu province region. This rare Hoya is distinguished by its thick, slightly fleshy leaves, adorned with silver speckles on a deep green background. Its fragrant flower umbels and scented blooms make it a highly sought-after plant for rare indoor plant collectors.

Hoya care: light, watering and substrate

Hoya 'Lai Chau' appreciates bright indirect light, ideally within one meter of a window. Water only when the substrate is thoroughly dry deep down, and space out watering further in winter to respect the plant's natural winter dryness. To promote healthy growth and root oxygenation, use our highly draining substrate enriched with beneficial fungi that multiply root absorption, formulated for Hoyas.

Where to place your Hoya to enhance its climbing habit?

  • Light: east or west window, bright filtered light all year round.
  • Temperature: between 18 and 28 °C, away from cold drafts.
  • Humidity: tolerates dry air but appreciates 50 to 60% ambient humidity.
  • Support: guide its stems on our transparent arching Hoya stakes for an elegant and structured habit.
  • Insufficient light: our full-spectrum grow light effectively compensates for the lack of natural light.

Frequently asked questions: why is my Hoya 'Lai Chau' not flowering?

Hoya 'Lai Chau' flowers when its persistent flower stalks are kept intact and the plant enjoys a slight winter dryness. Cutting these stalks after flowering removes future fragrant umbel cycles. A regular supply of liquid fertilizer formulated for Hoyas from March to October, combined with very good light, is the key to triggering a beautiful bloom. Also wait 2 to 3 weeks for acclimatization after receipt before any repotting.
