Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Hoya Lambii

What light exposure is right for my Hoya lambii?

The Hoya lambii prefers bright, indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window.

In its natural habitat in Borneo, it grows under the forest canopy, where the light is filtered. Indoors, it enjoys several hours of soft light each day, but should never be exposed to direct sunlight, which can burn its thick leaves.

In summer, move it slightly away from a south-facing window or protect it with a sheer curtain. In winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for the reduced natural light.

Important tip 🌿Prolonged exposure to insufficient light slows growth and reduces the chances of flowering. For rooms with low light levels, our full-spectrum grow light for houseplants accurately mimics natural light without harmful UV rays.

Is Hoya lambii toxic to animals and children?

Hoya lambii is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.

Unlike many houseplants, hoyas do not contain any known highly toxic compounds. Ingesting leaves or stems may cause mild digestive discomfort due to the latex in the sap, but does not pose a serious danger.

However, young children or curious pets may chew the leaves and experience mild oral or gastric irritation.

What precautions should you take on a daily basis?

As a precaution, it is advisable to keep Hoya lambii out of reach of pets and young children, even though the actual risk remains very limited.

Hoya lambii can safely coexist with your pets and children, provided it is placed thoughtfully in your home.

Why are the leaves of my Hoya lambii turning yellow?

Hoya Lambii leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

Hoya Lambii stores water reserves in its thick, fleshy leaves: limp, translucent yellowing is almost always a sign that the growing medium has remained too wet for too long.

Important tip 🌿One or two older leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, choose our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and safe for the plant.

When and how should I repot my Hoya lambii?

The Hoya Lambii is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

After receiving it, allow it 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate in its original pot before considering any repotting, so as not to add additional stress to the plant.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots grow out through the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the substrate compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

Note: the Hoya Lambii likes to be slightly snug in its pot, which can stimulate its flowering. Avoid enlarging the container too much at once.

Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our highly draining substrate formulated for Hoyas, designed to promote root oxygenation and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of substrate, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help the substrate settle. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Hoya lambii?

The Hoya Lambii is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period, essential for preparing for the future fragrant bloom.

A well-balanced supply promotes:

  • denser and more colorful foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and better plant resistance.

The Hoya Lambii, with its large, thick, and fleshy leaves, particularly benefits from regular potassium supply to strengthen the consistency of its foliage.

👉 For better results, we recommend our liquid fertilizer specially formulated for Hoyas, easy to dose, with quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize in dry substrate: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How to properly water my Hoya lambii?

Water the Hoya lambii when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 21 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.

How do you know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.

The Hoya lambii stores water in its fleshy leaves: in the event of slight dryness, the leaves may wrinkle slightly, a clear sign that it is ready for watering.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Hoyas tolerate a lack of water much better than overwatering, which causes root rot.

How do I propagate my Hoya lambii?

Hoya lambii is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in active growth.

Preparing the cuttingSelect a healthy stem with at least 1 to 2 nodes and 2 leaves. Cut just below a node using our stainless steel straight-tip plant snips for a clean cut that reduces the risk of infection. Allow the cut end to dry for 1 to 2 hours before placing it in the rooting medium.

  1. Prepare the cutting: make a clean cut below the node and remove the lower leaves.
  2. Place it in one of our clear pots to monitor root growth filled with damp sphagnum moss or our slightly moistened Hoya potting mix.
  3. Place the cutting in a warm, bright location between 20 and 25°C, away from direct sunlight.

The ideal rooting medium for Hoya lambii is live sphagnum moss, which maintains consistent moisture around the cut end while allowing air to circulate. Once rooted, repot into our highly free-draining Hoya potting mix.

Important tip 🌿The first roots appear within 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the ambient temperature. The cutting is ready to be repotted when the roots reach 3 to 5 cm in length. Avoid repotting too early, as this can weaken the developing root system.

The essentials regarding Hoya Lambii

Hoya Lambii: identity and origin

The Hoya Lambii, known by the scientific name Hoya lambii, is a climbing vine native to the forests of Borneo in Southeast Asia. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, this rare Hoya produces remarkable fragrant flower umbels when mature and stands out for its large, thick, fleshy, and slightly velvety leaves. Its fragrant blooms and sculptural foliage make it one of the most sought-after Hoyas by collectors.

Hoya care: light, watering, and substrate

Hoya Lambii thrives in bright, indirect light, with very infrequent watering: wait until the substrate is completely dry before rehydrating it. It tolerates periods of winter drought, which promote its spring growth. For the substrate, opt for our highly draining substrate enriched with biostimulants and formulated for Hoyas, designed to prevent water stagnation and oxygenate the roots.

Where to place your Hoya for dense, vigorous foliage?

  • East or west window: soft light for several hours a day.
  • Distance from the glass: 50 to 100 cm to prevent leaf scorch.
  • Temperature: between 18 and 26°C, away from cold drafts.
  • Support: guide its stems on our transparent arching Hoya stakes for an elegant, structured growth habit.
  • Dark rooms: compensate with our full-spectrum grow light to maintain steady growth.

Frequently asked questions: why isn't my Hoya Lambii blooming?

Hoya Lambii will not bloom if its flower stalks have been cut or if it lacks light and a winter rest period. Its flower umbels always form on the same stalks: never remove them between blooms. Give it a period of winter drought at 15-18°C to trigger fragrant blooms in spring. After delivery, wait 2 to 3 weeks before repotting to allow the plant to acclimate properly.
