About
Hoya Mirabilis, the wax plant with velvety leaves and spectacular blooms
Hoya Mirabilis, also known as Mirabilis wax plant or velvety porcelain plant, is a climbing species native to the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, belonging to the Apocynaceae family. Like its cousins in the Hoya genus, it produces twining stems capable of wrapping around a support, easily reaching a meter in length when grown indoors.
Its foliage is its first signature: thick, slightly fleshy leaves with a velvety feel and a matte, deep green surface. Each leaf features a soft and dense texture that clearly distinguishes it from other Hoyas with smooth foliage. Its most remarkable botanical feature remains its ability to produce star-shaped flower umbels, clustered in tight bouquets that give off a soft and captivating fragrance.
Our Hoya Mirabilis is available for delivery to your home. Order it now to add a climbing plant that is as rare as it is elegant to your collection.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Hoya Mirabilis
What light exposure is right for my Hoya Mirabilis?
The Hoya Mirabilis prefers bright, indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window.
In its natural habitat in Southeast Asia, it grows under the forest canopy, with light filtered through the tree leaves. It can therefore tolerate light shade, but too little light slows its growth and prevents the formation of the flower stalks necessary for blooming.
In summer, keep it 50 to 80 cm away from windows exposed to intense midday sun to avoid any risk of burning its velvety foliage. In winter, move it closer to the window to compensate for the reduction in natural light.
Important tip 🌿A Hoya Mirabilis deprived of sufficient light will never bloom, even if properly cared for.For dimly lit rooms, our full-spectrum grow light faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Hoya Mirabilis toxic to animals and children?
Hoya Mirabilis is generally considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children, unlike many houseplants.
Like most species in the Hoya genus, it does not contain highly toxic chemical compounds known to cause severe poisoning. However, the sap may cause mild skin or gastric irritation if ingested in large quantities, especially in sensitive individuals.
If a pet or child ingests a significant amount of leaves or stems, mild digestive symptoms such as nausea or slight irritation may occur, without causing any serious harm.
What precautions should you take on a daily basis?
As a precaution, keep your Hoya Mirabilis out of reach of young children and pets that tend to chew on plants.
Its relative safety makes it a suitable plant for most households, provided you keep an eye on the behavior of the smallest members of the household.
Why are the leaves of my Hoya Mirabilis turning yellow?
Hoya Mirabilis leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become soft, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
In the Hoya Mirabilis, whose fleshy leaves naturally store water, yellowing accompanied by a softened texture is almost always a sign of watering too frequently rather than a lack of water.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
The Hoya Mirabilis is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out of the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
Note: after receiving your plant, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering any repotting, to avoid additional stress related to the change of environment.
Like most Hoyas, the Hoya Mirabilis prefers to be slightly snug in its pot rather than in a container that is too large, which promotes water stagnation and root rot.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot by tapping it if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help the potting mix settle. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Hoya Mirabilis?
The Hoya Mirabilis is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period.
Properly dosed nutrients promote:
denser, well-colored foliage,
steady growth,
and better plant resistance.
For the Hoya Mirabilis, regular fertilization during the active period also promotes the initiation of flower stalks, which are essential for the formation of fragrant flower umbels.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry potting mix: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Hoya Mirabilis?
Water the Hoya Mirabilis when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 8 to 12 days in summer and every 20 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it's time to water.
Thanks to its fleshy leaves, which store water reserves, the Hoya Mirabilis easily tolerates prolonged periods of drought, much better than most tropical houseplants.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than too much, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Hoya Mirabilis?
Hoya Mirabilis is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in active growth.
Preparing the cuttingTake a healthy 10 to 15 cm stem with at least 2 nodes and 2 to 3 leaves. Remove the lower leaves to expose one or two bare nodes that will be buried in the rooting medium. Use our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut to avoid crushing the stem.
Make a clean cut just below a node with clean, disinfected stainless steel pruning shears.
Important tip 🌿The first roots usually appear within 3 to 6 weeks, depending on the ambient temperature and humidity. Do not transplant until the roots are well developed, at least 2 to 3 cm long.
The essentials regarding Hoya Mirabilis
Hoya Mirabilis: identity and origin
Hoya Mirabilis, or velvety wax plant, is a climbing species in the Apocynaceae family (Hoya mirabilis), native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia. It stands out from other Hoyas with its thick, velvety, matte foliage, as well as its star-shaped flower umbels that give off a sweet and long-lasting fragrance. Its twining stems can reach over a meter in indoor cultivation.
Hoya care: light, watering and substrate
Hoya Mirabilis appreciates bright indirect light, ideally near an east or west window. Infrequent watering is essential: wait until the substrate is dry deep down before watering, about every 2 to 3 weeks in winter. Use our highly draining substrate enriched with biostimulants for Hoyas, designed to promote root aeration and limit excess moisture.
Where to place your Hoya for optimal growth?
Light: east or west window, without direct sunlight.
Temperature: between 18°C and 28°C all year round.
Humidity: moderately humid atmosphere, away from radiators.
Frequently asked questions: why is my Hoya Mirabilis not flowering?
Hoya Mirabilis does not flower when it lacks light or when its flower stalks are accidentally removed. These stalks, small nodular points on the stems, must be kept because the plant re-flowers on the same supports from one year to the next. Regular fertilization with our liquid fertilizer formulated for Hoyas during the active period promotes the relative winter dryness that triggers flower initiation.
