About
Hoya Pauciflora, the tropical vine with delicate and rare flowers
Hoya Pauciflora, also known as the small-flowered wax plant or dense forest hoya, is an epiphytic vine native to the humid tropical forests of Southeast Asia, mainly the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, it grows naturally by clinging to tree trunks and branches, several meters above the ground, benefiting from light filtered by the canopy.
Its foliage is elegantly understated: oval, thick, and slightly leathery leaves, deep green, carried by long, twining stems. What truly distinguishes this hoya is its ability to produce umbels of small white flowers with colored centers, few in number but of remarkable delicacy, hence its Latin epithet pauciflora, literally meaning few-flowered.
Our Hoya Pauciflora is available for delivery, carefully packaged to arrive in perfect health at your home. Order now and add this rare vine to your collection.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Hoya Pauciflora
What light exposure is right for my Hoya Pauciflora?
The Hoya Pauciflora prefers bright, indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window.
In its natural habitat, this epiphytic vine grows beneath the canopy of Southeast Asian tropical forests, which filters the direct sunlight. Indoors, it can tolerate a few hours of gentle morning sun, but midday direct sunlight will quickly scorch its thick leaves.
In summer, move it slightly away from the window or use a sheer curtain. In autumn and winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for the reduced sunlight. Ample light not only promotes beautiful foliage growth but also the formation of flower stalks.
Important tip 🌿A Hoya Pauciflora placed in a dark corner may never flower and its growth may permanently stagnate. For rooms with low light, our full-spectrum horticultural lamp for indoor plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Hoya Pauciflora toxic to animals and children?
Hoya Pauciflora is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.
Like most Hoyas, it does not contain any identified highly toxic active compounds. It is not listed among the dangerous plants for dogs and cats compiled by the ASPCA.
That said, ingesting the leaves may cause mild digestive irritation, nausea, or temporary vomiting due to the latex present in the plant. These reactions remain mild and harmless.
What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?
Although the risk is low, it is best to keep Hoya Pauciflora out of reach of young children and overly curious pets, preferably by placing it on a high surface or on an arching support that naturally keeps it off the ground.
For households with pets or young children, Hoya Pauciflora remains a suitable choice, provided you keep an eye on the behavior of your four-legged companions.
Why are my Hoya Pauciflora leaves turning yellow?
Hoya Pauciflora leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
Hoya Pauciflora stores water reserves in its thick, leathery leaves: yellowing accompanied by softening of the leaf blade is almost always a sign that the growing medium has remained damp for too long, especially during the recommended winter dry period.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
The Hoya Pauciflora is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out of the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the substrate compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
Note: after receiving your Hoya Pauciflora, give it 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate before considering repotting, so that it can adapt smoothly to its new environment.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, which must have drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of substrate, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help the substrate settle. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Hoya pauciflora?
The Hoya Pauciflora is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period.
A well-balanced supply promotes:
denser, well-colored foliage,
steady growth,
and better plant resistance.
For the Hoya Pauciflora, a fertilizer slightly rich in phosphorus and potassium at the end of the season supports the formation of flower stalks and prepares for the fragrant bloom of the following season.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry substrate: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Hoya Pauciflora?
Water the Hoya Pauciflora when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 20 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How to know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: push your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it's time to water.
Thanks to its thick and leathery leaves, the Hoya Pauciflora naturally stores water reserves, allowing it to tolerate periods of drought much longer than most tropical houseplants.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Hoya Pauciflora?
The Hoya Pauciflora is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in full growth.
Selecting and preparing the cuttingChoose a healthy stem bearing at least 2 nodes and 2 to 3 leaves. Make a clean cut just below a node using our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears. Let the cut air dry for 30 to 60 minutes to prevent infection.
Prepare your 10 to 15 cm cutting with at least 2 nodes. Remove the lower leaves, leaving only the nodes that will develop roots.
Place in a warm location (22 to 25°C) with bright indirect light. Avoid cold drafts.
Live sphagnum moss is the preferred rooting medium for Hoyas: it maintains constant humidity while allowing the roots to breathe. Once the roots are well formed (3 to 5 cm), transfer the cutting to our highly free-draining Hoya substrate enriched with biostimulants.
Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 4 to 8 weeks depending on the temperature. The first signs of success: the appearance of new leaves or small white roots visible through the clear pot.
The essentials regarding Hoya Pauciflora
Hoya Pauciflora: identity and origin
The Hoya Pauciflora, from its Latin name Hoya pauciflora, is an epiphytic vine from the Apocynaceae family, native to the humid tropical forests of the Malay Peninsula and Borneo. Its name literally means few flowers, referring to its sparsely populated but rare elegance floral umbels. This species produces a fragrant subtle bloom, precious for Hoya enthusiasts looking for extraordinary specimens.
Hoya care: light, watering and substrate
Hoyas appreciate bright indirect light, ideally near an east or west window. Water only when the substrate is thoroughly dry deep down, practicing a marked winter drought between November and February. For optimal spaced watering and healthy roots, use our highly draining Hoya substrate enriched with biostimulants, specially formulated for this demanding family.
Where to place your Hoya for successful blooming?
East or west window: ideal exposure, soft light.
Distance from glass: 50 to 80 cm to avoid burns.
Temperature: between 18 and 28°C, without cold drafts.
Frequently asked questions: why does my Hoya Pauciflora not bloom?
The Hoya Pauciflora needs several conditions combined to form its flower stalks: generous bright indirect light, a respected winter drought period and a slight drop in nighttime temperature between October and February. Never remove the flower stalks after blooming: the plant blooms again on the same supports in the following seasons. A regular supply of our liquid fertilizer formulated for Hoyas from March to October also promotes blooming.
