About
Hoya Shepherdii, the hoya with ribbon-like leaves of rare elegance
Hoya Shepherdii, sometimes called bean leaf hoya or ribbon hoya, is a climbing and trailing plant native to the Himalayan regions of northeastern India and Nepal. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, this species is distinguished by its long and narrow leaves, deep green and slightly glossy, which earn it its nickname of bean runner hoya.
What makes Hoya Shepherdii truly unique is the linear and graceful silhouette of its foliage, so different from other hoyas with round or fleshy leaves. Its long hanging leaves create an aerial plant cascade with a spectacular effect, whether the plant is installed in suspension or guided on a support. Like many hoyas, it develops vigorous stems capable of growing several dozen centimeters per season.
Our Hoya Shepherdii is available for delivery anywhere in France. Add it to your collection today and receive this extremely rare tropical vine directly at your home.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Hoya Shepherdii
What light exposure is right for my Hoya shepherdii?
The Hoya Shepherdii prefers bright, indirect light, ideally near an east- or west-facing window.
In its natural Himalayan habitat, it grows under light vegetation cover, filtering the light without ever being exposed to direct sunlight. Indoors, reproducing these conditions is essential to support its growth and promote the formation of its fragrant flower umbels.
In summer, move it slightly away from the window or place a sheer curtain to soften direct light. In winter, move it closer to the window to compensate for the reduced sunlight. A south-facing orientation is also suitable, provided a thin sheer curtain is placed between the plant and the window during the peak season.
Important tip 🌿Avoid moving the Hoya Shepherdii too often: it adapts to its light position, and sudden changes can cause leaf loss or slow down its flowering. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Hoya shepherdii toxic to pets and children?
Hoya Shepherdii is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children, making it a suitable plant for households with pets.
Like most hoyas, it does not contain chemical compounds classified as dangerous by major veterinary databases, including the ASPCA. Its sap may cause mild irritation upon prolonged direct contact with sensitive skin, but poses no real danger if small quantities of leaves are accidentally ingested.
Ingesting large quantities may cause mild, temporary digestive upset, as with most houseplants.
What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?
Although the risk is low, it is best to keep Hoya Shepherdii out of reach of young children and particularly curious pets, for example by hanging it or placing it on a high surface.
This species is perfectly safe to keep in the same household as cats, dogs, and children, provided that normal supervision is maintained.
Why are my Hoya Shepherdii leaves turning yellow?
Hoya Shepherdii leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by overwatering, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
Hoya Shepherdii has long, narrow leaves that store little water compared to other fleshy-leaved Hoyas: it is therefore particularly sensitive to overwatering, and the first signs of yellowing often appear more quickly than in its relatives.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
The Hoya Shepherdii is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out of the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
After receiving your Hoya Shepherdii, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering repotting: the plant needs to adapt to its new light and humidity environment before undergoing this additional stress.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Hoya shepherdii?
Fertilize the Hoya Shepherdii every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative rest period.
Properly dosed fertilizer promotes:
denser, more colorful foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resistance.
The Hoya Shepherdii particularly benefits from a balanced fertilizer during its active growth period: its long stems can grow quickly and need a regular supply of nutrients to maintain vigorous foliage throughout the season.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry potting mix: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Hoya Shepherdii?
Water the Hoya Shepherdii when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it is time to water.
Unlike other Hoyas with thick, fleshy leaves, the Hoya Shepherdii has thinner leaves that store less water: signs of deficiency appear more quickly, but overwatering remains its main threat. In winter, take advantage of its winter dormancy period to space out waterings significantly.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Hoya shepherdii?
Hoya Shepherdii is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when growth is most active.
Selecting and preparing the cuttingTake a healthy stem with at least 2 to 3 nodes and a few leaves. Make a clean cut just below a node using our stainless steel straight-tip plant snips to avoid any tearing that could weaken the cutting. Let the cut dry for 1 to 2 hours before planting.
Prepare your cutting by removing the lower leaves, leaving only 2 to 3 leaves at the top of the stem.
Place the cutting in a warm location (22 to 26°C), bright without direct sunlight, and maintain high ambient humidity by loosely covering it with a perforated plastic bag if necessary.
Live sphagnum moss is particularly recommended for Hoyas: it maintains consistent moisture while allowing excellent aeration, two ideal conditions for root development. Once the roots are well formed (4 to 6 weeks), transplant into our well-draining substrate enriched with biostimulants for Hoyas.
Important tip 🌿Hoya Shepherdii generally takes 4 to 8 weeks to root, depending on the temperature and light. The first roots appear at the nodes: this is the sign that the cutting has taken root. Avoid pulling on the stem to test for rooting.
The essentials regarding Hoya Shepherdii
Hoya Shepherdii: identity and origin
Hoya Shepherdii, also known as hoya haricot runner or hoya ribbon leaves, is a climbing plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to the Himalayan foothills of northeastern India and Nepal. Its long, narrow, glossy leaves, very different from those of round-leaved hoyas, give it an instantly recognizable graphic silhouette. Under favorable conditions, it produces discreet flower umbels with a fragrant bloom that captivate collectors.
Caring for hoyas: light, watering and substrate
Hoya Shepherdii appreciates bright indirect light and infrequent watering, always allowing the substrate to dry out thoroughly. Its substrate must be highly draining to prevent root suffocation. We recommend our fungus-enriched substrate, which increases root absorption, designed to meet the specific needs of hoyas. The winter dry period is a key time: reduce watering significantly during this period.
Where to place your hoya for optimal growth?
East or west window: bright indirect light all day long, ideal.
Distance from the window: 50 to 100 cm to prevent the leaves from getting sunburned.
Temperature: between 18 and 28°C, away from cold drafts.
Insufficient light: supplement with our full-spectrum grow light to maintain active growth all year round.
Frequently asked questions: why isn't my Hoya Shepherdii flowering?
Hoya Shepherdii flowers mainly when it receives sufficient light and is given a proper winter dry period. Its flower stalks form on mature stems: it is essential never to cut the stems after flowering, as future umbels will reform in the same place. Regular application of liquid fertilizer formulated for hoyas from March to October supports the formation of future blooms. Finally, allow 2 to 3 weeks for the plant to acclimatize after delivery before repotting.
