About

Hoya sp. Vietnam, the tropical vine with sculpted leaves from Southeast Asia

Hoya sp. Vietnam, also known as Hoya from Vietnam or Hoya species Vietnam, is an epiphytic vine native to the humid tropical forests of Vietnam. Belonging to the Apocynaceae family, this Hoya, which has not yet been formally described as a species, fascinates with its thick and slightly embossed leaves, with deep green reflections that are sometimes iridescent depending on the angle of the light.

Each leaf of this rare Hoya reveals a velvety texture and a pronounced shape that immediately distinguishes it from other species of the genus. A climbing or trailing plant, it develops long twining stems capable of climbing a support or cascading elegantly from a shelf. Its natural epiphytic behavior allows it to thrive with little root disturbance, making it a surprisingly low-maintenance plant on a daily basis.

Our Hoya sp. Vietnam is available for delivery, carefully packaged to travel safely to your home. Add it to your collection and enjoy a plant that comes directly from the tropical forests of Asia.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Hoya sp. Vietnam

What light exposure is right for my Hoya sp. Vietnam?

Hoya sp. Vietnam prefers bright, indirect light, ideally within one meter of a well-exposed window.

In its natural habitat in Vietnam, this epiphytic vine grows beneath the canopy of tropical forests, protected from direct rays but bathed in intense diffused light. Indoors, an east or west exposure is ideal in spring and autumn. In summer, be sure to protect the leaves from the midday sun with a light curtain.

In winter, move the pot closer to the light source to compensate for the decrease in sunlight. A south-facing orientation with a curtain remains possible if the direct light does not directly reach the foliage.

Important tip 🌿A Hoya sp. Vietnam placed too far from the light will develop very spaced-out internodes and will not flower. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.

Is Hoya sp. Vietnam toxic to animals and children?

Hoya sp. Vietnam is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.

Plants in the Hoya genus do not contain compounds listed as toxic by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). Their slightly milky sap may cause mild skin or digestive irritation if ingested in large quantities, but there are no documented serious effects.

In the event of accidental ingestion of leaves or stems, mild mouth irritation may occur, with no known serious consequences.

What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?

Even though the plant is considered safe, it is best to keep it out of reach of young children and curious pets, particularly to protect the foliage and flower stalks.

Hoya sp. Vietnam remains a perfectly suitable plant for households with pets and children, provided a few simple placement precautions are taken.

Why are the leaves of my Hoya sp. Vietnam turning yellow?

The leaves of Hoya sp. Vietnam most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become soft, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

Hoya sp. Vietnam stores some of its water reserves in its thick leaves: a slight softening of the leaf blade is often the first sign of a substrate that is constantly too wet, well before yellowing appears.

Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, choose our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and safe for the plant.

When and how should I repot my Hoya sp. Vietnam?

The Hoya sp. Vietnam is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots grow out of the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

After receiving your Hoya sp. Vietnam, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering repotting: the plant must first adapt to the light and humidity conditions of your home.

Note: the Hoya sp. Vietnam likes to be slightly snug in its pot, which encourages the production of flower umbels. Do not repot it too early or into a container that is too large.

Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, and make sure it has drainage holes. Our clear pots for monitoring root regrowth are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root regrowth without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our highly free-draining potting mix formulated for Hoyas, designed for drainage, aeration, and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in around it without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Hoya sp. Vietnam?

Fertilize the Hoya sp. Vietnam every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the period of vegetative dormancy, and this winter dryness combined with the cessation of nutrient inputs actively prepares the plant for flowering the following spring.

Properly dosed fertilization promotes:

  • denser, more colorful foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and better plant resistance.

The Hoya sp. Vietnam, like all epiphytic vines of the Hoya genus, responds particularly well to a fertilizer formulated to support both dense foliage and the production of fragrant flower umbels.

👉 For best results, we recommend our liquid fertilizer specially formulated for Hoyas, which is easy to dose and delivers quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry substrate: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How to properly water my Hoya sp. Vietnam?

Water the Hoya sp. Vietnam when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 15 to 21 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.

How do you know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: push your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it is time to water.

The Hoya sp. Vietnam has slightly fleshy leaves that allow it to store a small reserve of water: a substrate that remains constantly slightly damp is more harmful to this species than slightly infrequent watering. Winter dryness is even recommended to stimulate flowering.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.

How do I propagate my Hoya sp. Vietnam?

Hoya sp. Vietnam is propagated by stem cuttings with at least one node, ideally in spring or early summer when growth is active.

Preparing the cuttingSelect a healthy 10 to 15 cm stem with 2 to 3 leaves and at least one or two well-formed nodes. Cut cleanly just below the lower node with our stainless steel pruning shears for a clean cut that reduces the risk of rot. Remove the lower leaves to leave the node clearly exposed.

  1. Leave the cut to callus for 30 minutes in the open air, then place the cutting in a glass of clear water or in slightly moist live sphagnum moss to maintain moisture around the node.
  2. Place the cutting in one of our clear pots to monitor root development as soon as small white roots at least 2 cm long appear.
  3. Place the cutting in a warm (22-25°C), bright location away from direct sunlight, and maintain ambient humidity above 50% to promote rooting.

Once rooted, transplant into our well-draining Hoya biostimulant-enriched potting mix to support the growth of the young plant.

Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 3 to 6 weeks, depending on temperature and humidity. The first signs of success are the appearance of new leaves or young shoots at the nodes.

The essentials regarding Hoya sp. Vietnam

Hoya sp. Vietnam: identity and origin

Hoya sp. Vietnam, with its Latin name Hoya sp. Vietnam, is an epiphytic vine native to the humid tropical forests of Vietnam, belonging to the Apocynaceae family. This species, not yet formally described, captivates with its thick, crinkled leaves and its ability to produce magnificent fragrant flower umbels in spring. Its fragrant bloom makes it one of the most sought-after species among Hoya collectors in Europe.

Hoya care: light, watering and substrate

Hoya appreciates bright indirect light, within one meter of an east or west-facing window. Watering should be spaced out: wait until the substrate is thoroughly dry throughout its depth before watering, which is about every 10 to 14 days during the active period. For a suitable substrate, use our highly draining substrate enriched with beneficial fungi that multiply root absorption, specially formulated for Hoyas.

Where to place your Hoya to promote flowering and thick foliage?

  • Light: east or west window, bright light without direct sun.
  • Temperature: between 18 and 28°C, protected from cold drafts.
  • Humidity: maintain a rate above 50% for healthy foliage.
  • Support: guide the climbing stems with our transparent arching Hoya stakes, elegant and discreet.
  • Compensation: for dark interiors, our full-spectrum grow light supports growth all year round.

Frequently asked questions: why is my Hoya sp. Vietnam not flowering?

Hoya sp. Vietnam mainly does not flower due to lack of light, overwatering, or the absence of a winter dry period. To trigger flowering, reduce watering from November to February and place the plant in a brighter location. Never cut the flower stalks after flowering: the Hoya blooms again from the same growth points every year. Applying our liquid fertilizer formulated for Hoyas from March accelerates flowering.
