About

Hoya 'Timor', the tropical vine with velvety leaves from Southeast Asia

Hoya 'Timor', also known as Timor Hoya or Timor wax plant, is a climbing vine in the Apocynaceae family, native to the island of Timor in Indonesia. This tropical species is renowned for its fleshy, slightly velvety, deep green leaves with subtle highlights, borne on flexible, vigorous stems capable of growing over a meter long indoors.

Its presence in a room adds a touch that is both wild and sophisticated. The dense, textured foliage of Hoya 'Timor' gives it a graphic character that is rare among climbing houseplants. Its stems produce persistent flower stalks that should never be pruned, as it is on these same supports that the umbels reform season after season, year after year.

Our Hoya 'Timor' is available for delivery throughout France. Add this rare tropical vine to your collection and have it delivered directly to your home, carefully packaged to travel safely.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Hoya 'Timor'

What light exposure is best for my Hoya 'Timor'?

The Hoya 'Timor' prefers bright, indirect light, within one meter of a well-exposed window, preferably facing east or west.

In its natural habitat on the island of Timor, it grows beneath the tropical forest canopy, filtering the intense light through the upper foliage. Indoors, a south-facing window is also suitable, provided a light curtain is used to soften the direct afternoon rays.

In summer, move it slightly away from the window or use a curtain. In winter, move it closer to the light source to compensate for the reduction in natural sunlight.

Important tip 🌿A Hoya 'Timor' placed in a location that is too dark will produce few new leaves and will not develop its characteristic flower umbels. For rooms with low light, our grow light for indoor plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.

Is the Hoya 'Timor' toxic to animals and children?

Hoya 'Timor' is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.

Hoyas do not contain any substances listed as dangerous by the ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals). In small amounts, their latex can cause mild irritation to the mucous membranes if ingested in large quantities, but no cases of serious toxicity have been documented for this botanical family.

In the event of ingesting large quantities, any symptoms are generally limited to mild, temporary digestive irritation and are not serious.

What precautions should be taken on a daily basis?

Although the plant is considered safe, it is best to keep it out of reach of young children and pets that might chew on its fleshy leaves, simply as a precautionary measure.

Hoya 'Timor' remains one of the most accessible climbing plants for households with pets, making it a worry-free choice for decorating your home.

Why are the leaves of my Hoya 'Timor' turning yellow?

Hoya 'Timor' leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

Hoya 'Timor' has fleshy leaves that naturally store water: yellowing accompanied by limp, translucent leaves is almost always a sign that the potting mix has remained too wet for too long.

Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, choose our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and safe for the plant.

When and how should I repot my Hoya 'Timor'?

The Hoya 'Timor' is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots emerge from the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the substrate compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

After receiving your Hoya 'Timor', wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering any repotting: the plant needs to adapt to its new light and humidity environment before undergoing a substrate change.

Hoyas appreciate being slightly snug in their pot, which promotes flowering. Do not choose a container that is too large: a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one is more than enough. Our clear perforated pots for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency allows you to easily monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our highly draining substrate formulated for Hoyas, designed for drainage, oxygenation, and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of substrate, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help the substrate settle. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Hoya 'Timor'?

The Hoya 'Timor' is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period.

Properly dosed nutrients promote:

  • denser, well-colored foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and better plant resistance.

For the Hoya 'Timor', regular fertilization in spring and summer stimulates the formation of flower stalks and actively prepares the next fragrant umbels.

👉 For best results, we recommend our liquid fertilizer specially formulated for Hoyas, which is easy to dose and delivers quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry growing medium: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How to properly water my Hoya 'Timor'?

Water the Hoya 'Timor' when the substrate has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 8 to 10 days in summer and every 15 to 20 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.

How to know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: push your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the substrate. If the substrate is dry, it is time to water.

The Hoya 'Timor' stores water in its fleshy leaves, which gives it real resistance to winter drought: it is better to water too little than too much, especially during the coldest months.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which rots the roots.

How do I propagate my Hoya 'Timor'?

The Hoya 'Timor' is propagated by semi-hardwood stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when growth is most active.

Preparing the cuttingTake a stem 8 to 12 cm long with at least 2 nodes and 2 to 3 healthy leaves. Remove the lower leaves so that the lower nodes are clearly exposed. Use our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut that reduces the risk of infection.

  1. Leave the cut to air-dry for 30 minutes to form a protective callus.
  2. Place the cutting in one of our clear pots so you can monitor root development, filled with slightly moist live sphagnum moss.
  3. Place the cutting in a warm location (22 to 25°C), in bright indirect light, and maintain light humidity around the growing medium.

The live sphagnum moss is the best rooting medium for Hoyas: it retains just enough moisture without drowning the roots. For transplanting, use our highly free-draining medium designed for Hoyas.

Important tip 🌿Rooting usually takes 3 to 6 weeks. The first signs of success are the appearance of new leaves or small roots visible through the clear walls of the pot.

The essentials regarding Hoya 'Timor'

Hoya 'Timor': identity and origin

Hoya 'Timor', or Hoya sp. Timor, is a tropical climbing vine native to Timor Island in Indonesia, belonging to the Apocynaceae family. Nicknamed the Timor wax plant, it is prized for its fleshy, velvety leaves and its fragrant flower umbels, which are the signature of collector's Hoyas. Its fragrant, star-shaped clustered flowers make it one of the most sought-after species among rare plant enthusiasts.

Hoya care: light, watering and substrate

Hoya 'Timor' prefers bright indirect light, within one meter of an east- or west-facing window. Watering is spaced out: the substrate must dry out completely between waterings. For perfect drainage and optimal root development, we recommend our highly draining substrate enriched with biostimulants for Hoyas, designed for their specific needs.

Where to place your Hoya to encourage flowering?

  • Bright light: within one meter of an east or west window.
  • Temperature: ideally between 18 and 26°C all year round.
  • Humidity: moderate humidity of 40 to 60% is perfectly suitable.
  • Winter dryness: reducing watering stimulates spring flowering.
  • Insufficient light: supplement with our full-spectrum grow light or guide its stems with our arch supports for Hoyas for harmonious growth.

Frequently asked questions: why isn't my Hoya 'Timor' flowering?

Hoya 'Timor' does not flower when it lacks light, maturity, or when its flower stalks have been mistakenly cut. These flower stalks are permanent: Hoyas re-flower every year on the same supports. Make sure to give it a light winter dryness and a regular supply of liquid fertilizer formulated for Hoyas starting in spring to stimulate the formation of umbels. Also wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate after delivery before repotting.
