About
Hoya Tsangii, the climbing jewel with star-shaped umbels
Hoya Tsangii, also known as porcelain vine Hoya Tsangii or star Hoya, is a tropical climbing plant native to the Philippines and belonging to the Apocynaceae family. First described by botanists in the 20th century, this rare species stands out for its thick, fleshy, slightly puckered leaves, deep green and speckled with small silver spots.
Its semi-succulent foliage has the waxy texture characteristic of Hoyas, reflecting its natural ability to store water in its leaf cells. The oval leaves with metallic highlights create a striking luminous effect depending on the angle of the light. A climbing or trailing plant, Hoya Tsangii produces twining stems that gracefully grow longer to adorn a support, shelf, or hanging planter.
Order your Hoya Tsangii today and receive it carefully packaged, ready to join your rare plant collection, delivered directly to your door.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Hoya Tsangii
What light exposure is right for my Hoya Tsangii?
The Hoya Tsangii prefers bright indirect light, without ever receiving direct sunlight in summer.
In its natural Philippine habitat, this epiphytic plant grows under the tree canopy, in filtered and constant light. An east or west-facing window represents the ideal placement to provide it with beautiful brightness without the risk of leaf burn.
In winter, move it closer to the window to compensate for the drop in natural light. In summer, if the room is very sunny, place a light sheer curtain to soften the most intense rays.
Important tip 🌿A Hoya Tsangii lacking light develops leggy stems with few leaves, and its flowering is compromised. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Hoya Tsangii toxic to animals and children?
Hoya Tsangii is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children, making it a suitable plant for most households.
Like all hoyas, it contains no alkaloids or harmful compounds identified by leading veterinary databases, including the ASPCA, which classifies hoyas as non-toxic to common household pets.
However, ingesting large quantities of leaves may cause mild, temporary digestive irritation, as with any non-food plant.
What precautions should you take on a daily basis?
As a precaution, keep your Hoya Tsangii out of reach of young children and curious pets, particularly to protect the stems and leaves from accidental bites.
In the event of significant accidental ingestion, consult a veterinarian or doctor. In the vast majority of cases, it can coexist with pets and children without any problems.
Why are the leaves of my Hoya Tsangii turning yellow?
Hoya tsangii leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is usually caused by overwatering, which can lead to the early stages of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small pale spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
Hoya tsangii is particularly sensitive to waterlogged roots: its thick, fleshy leaves store water, so any excess moisture around the roots can quickly damage the foliage.
Important tip 🌿It is perfectly normal for one or two older leaves to turn yellow from time to time. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the new growth.
The Hoya Tsangii is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out of the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
After receiving your Hoya Tsangii, allow it 2 to 3 weeks to acclimate in its original pot before considering repotting, so that it can adapt smoothly to its new environment.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently loosen the roots if they are very compact, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Hoya tsangii?
The Hoya Tsangii is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period.
A well-balanced supply promotes:
denser, well-colored foliage,
steady growth,
and better plant resistance.
The Hoya Tsangii particularly benefits from a potassium-rich fertilizer during the active growth period, which supports the formation of its climbing stems and enhances the quality of its fleshy foliage.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize a dry substrate: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Hoya Tsangii?
Water the Hoya Tsangii when the potting mix has dried out thoroughly, approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 21 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.
Thanks to its thick, semi-succulent leaves, the Hoya Tsangii stores internal water reserves that allow it to withstand long periods without watering, far longer than most tropical houseplants.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than overwatering, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Hoya Tsangii?
Hoya Tsangii is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in its peak growth phase.
Preparing the cuttingSelect a healthy stem with at least 2 to 3 nodes and 2 leaves. Cut just below a node using our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut without crushing the tissue. Remove the lower leaves so that only the upper leaves remain.
Let the cut dry in the open air for 1 to 2 hours before planting to prevent rot.
Important tip 🌿Hoya Tsangii usually takes 3 to 6 weeks to root. Be patient and resist the temptation to pull on the cutting to check. The first new leaves are the best sign of success.
The essentials regarding Hoya Tsangii
Hoya Tsangii: identity and origin
Hoya Tsangii, also known as the star porcelain vine, is an epiphytic climbing plant in the Apocynaceae family, native to the Philippines. This species is prized for its fragrant flower umbels and its star-shaped fragrant blooms, which appear on persistent flower stalks. Its thick, dark green leaves, speckled with silver, make it a particularly sought-after Hoya for collectors.
Hoya care: light, watering and substrate
Hoya prefer bright indirect light and infrequent watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Hoya Tsangii tolerates moderate humidity but prefers slightly drier air during winter, which corresponds to its natural winter dormancy. We recommend our highly draining substrate enriched with beneficial fungi that multiply root absorption, specifically designed for hoyas.
Where to place your Hoya to showcase its fleshy foliage?
East or west window: ideal bright indirect light all year round.
Distance from window: at least 50 cm in midsummer to prevent leaf scorch.
Temperature: between 18 and 28°C, away from cold drafts.
Frequently asked questions: why isn't my Hoya Tsangii flowering?
Hoya Tsangii flowers when it receives enough bright light and experiences a slight winter drought. The flower stalks persist from season to season: never cut them, even after flowering, as new flower umbels reform on the same points. A potassium-rich fertilizer, such as our liquid fertilizer formulated for hoyas, supports fragrant flowering during the active growing season. After delivery, allow 2 to 3 weeks for the plant to acclimate before repotting.
