About
Labisia Vietnam, the silver-veined plant from the forests of Southeast Asia
Labisia Vietnam, known by its scientific name Labisia pumila var. pumila, is a tropical plant native to the damp undergrowth of the Malay Peninsula, Thailand, and Vietnam. Belonging to the Primulaceae family, it grows naturally in the dense shade of tropical forests, at ground level, rarely exceeding 30 cm in height at maturity.
Its foliage is strikingly elegant: oval leaves, slightly wavy at the edges, deep green and crossed by luminous silver veins that look hand-drawn. Each leaf is a graphic composition in its own right, offering a rare and refined decorative effect in an interior. Its slow and compact growth makes it a plant with character that fits as well on a desk as in a terrarium or a humid display cabinet.

Help and solutions:
Everything you need to know Labisia Vietnam
What light exposure is best for my Labisia Vietnam?
The Labisia Vietnam prefers low to moderate light, without exposure to direct sunlight.
In its natural habitat of tropical undergrowth in Vietnam and the Malay Peninsula, it receives only very filtered, diffused light attenuated by the canopy. Indoors, place it away from direct rays, ideally in the shade of a bright room or behind a light curtain.
In summer, move it further away from south- or west-facing windows to prevent leaf scorch. In winter, move it slightly closer to a source of natural light to compensate for the shorter days.
Important tip 🌿Direct sunlight, even for a few hours a day, is enough to fade the silver veins and burn the leaves beyond repair. For low-light rooms, our full-spectrum grow light for tropical plants faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Labisia Vietnam toxic to animals and children?
Labisia Vietnam is not listed among the highly toxic plants for cats, dogs, and young children according to available botanical databases.
Belonging to the Primulaceae family, Labisia Vietnam however contains natural saponins in its leaves and stems, chemical compounds that can cause mild digestive irritation if ingested, especially in young children and small animals.
In case of large quantity ingestion, gastrointestinal disorders such as nausea, vomiting, or mild diarrhea may appear.
What precautions to take on a daily basis?
As a precaution, it is advisable to place Labisia Vietnam out of reach of pets and young children. A high location on a shelf or in a closed terrarium remains the safest solution.
With simple precautions, Labisia Vietnam coexists perfectly in a household with animals or children, without posing a serious risk on a daily basis.
Why are the leaves of my Labisia Vietnam turning yellow?
The leaves of the Labisia Vietnam most often turn yellow due to overwatering, a lack of light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the beginning of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
The Labisia Vietnam is particularly sensitive to excessive light exposure: direct sunlight or too-bright light erases the silver veins and causes irreversible yellowing of the leaves, unlike most tropical houseplants.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the phenomenon spreads to the young leaves.
Labisia Vietnam is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out through the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the growing medium compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
After receiving your Labisia Vietnam, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate before considering repotting, so as not to stress the plant further during its adaptation period to its new environment.
Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of growing medium, position the plant upright, and fill in without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the growing medium. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Labisia Vietnam?
The Labisia Vietnam is fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October, with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it. This is the vegetative rest period.
A well-dosed supply promotes:
denser and well-colored foliage,
steady growth,
and better plant resistance.
The Labisia Vietnam, a naturally slow-growing understory plant, does not need intensive fertilization: a half-dose compared to usual recommendations is often sufficient to avoid burning its fine roots.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize in dry substrate: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Labisia Vietnam?
Water the Labisia Vietnam when the surface of the potting mix begins to dry out, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 14 days in winter. Use filtered water or room-temperature rainwater.
How do you know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.
Unlike many tropical plants, the Labisia Vietnam does not like the potting mix to dry out completely between waterings: its fine, shallow root system suffers quickly if the mix remains dry for more than a few days.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than too much, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Labisia Vietnam?
Labisia Vietnam can be propagated by dividing clumps or by stem cuttings, ideally in spring between April and June.
Propagation by divisionThe simplest and most reliable method is to carefully divide the clump during repotting by separating the rhizomes by hand or using our stainless steel straight-tip secateurs for a clean cut, making sure to leave at least 2 to 3 leaves on each division.
Remove the plant from its pot and separate the rhizomes into self-contained sections with roots and leaves.
Important tip 🌿Rooting generally takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on conditions. The sign of success is the appearance of a new leaf. Maintain high humidity throughout the rooting period to maximize your chances.
The essentials regarding Labisia Vietnam
Labisia Vietnam: identity and origin
Labisia Vietnam, scientific name Labisia pumila, is a tropical plant from the Primulaceae family, native to the damp and shaded undergrowth of Vietnam, Thailand, and the Malay Peninsula. Also known as the "silver-veined plant" or "jewel of the forest", it grows naturally on the ground, under a dense canopy, and rarely exceeds 30 cm in height. Its oval leaves, crossed by luminous silver veins, make it an exceptionally rare plant with graphic foliage.
Labisia care: light, watering and substrate
Labisia prefers low to moderate light, never direct rays. Regular watering with filtered water, keeping the substrate slightly moist without excess water, meets its needs. For an optimal substrate, we recommend our universal substrate enriched with beneficial fungi that multiply root absorption, perfectly suited to tropical undergrowth plants.
Where to place your Labisia to preserve the brilliance of its silver veins?
Light: low indirect, away from sunny windows.
Temperature: between 18 and 26 °C all year round, away from drafts.
Humidity: above 60%, ideally in a terrarium or display cabinet.
Frequently asked questions: why do the veins of my Labisia Vietnam fade?
The silver veins of the Labisia Vietnam fade mainly when the plant receives too much direct or bright light. This phenomenon is irreversible on the already affected leaves, but new leaves with well-marked veins grow back as soon as the plant regains a suitable exposure. A nutrient deficiency in spring can also dull the foliage contrasts: a regular supply of concentrated liquid fertilizer for tropical plants is often enough to restore the liveliness of the foliage. Wait 2 to 3 weeks after receipt before any repotting.
