About

Ludisia discolor, the jewel orchid with exquisite foliage

Ludisia discolor, known by the nicknames jewel orchid or jewel orchid, is a terrestrial orchid native to the shaded forests of Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia, Indonesia, and southern China. Unlike most orchids grown for their flowers, Ludisia discolor belongs to the Orchidaceae family and stands out for its strikingly beautiful foliage, which is its main attraction.

Its velvety leaves, a dark green almost burgundy, are crisscrossed by finely chiseled golden or silver veins, evoking a precious fabric. This unique texture catches the light with remarkable intensity. Indoors, Ludisia discolor takes on a low and spreading habit, its fleshy stems gently creeping to form a dense and lush carpet, highly prized by rare plant collectors.

Our Ludisia discolor is available for delivery: order this exceptional jewel orchid and add a rare botanical touch to your interior today.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know Ludisia Discolor

What light exposure is right for my Ludisia discolor?

Ludisia discolor prefers soft, indirect light, and its velvety leaves should never be exposed to direct sunlight.

In its natural habitat, this terrestrial orchid grows beneath the canopy of shaded tropical forests in Southeast Asia, where light filters through dense tree foliage. Indoors, recreating these conditions is essential: a north- or east-facing window, or a position set back from a south- or west-facing window with a sheer curtain, is ideal.

In summer, keep it away from windows exposed to afternoon sun. In winter, move it slightly closer to the light source to compensate for the reduction in natural sunlight.

Important tip 🌿Excessive light dulls the golden veins and irreversibly fades the burgundy foliage. Keep an eye on the color of the leaves: if they become too pale or green, move the plant to a shadier spot. For dimly lit rooms, our full-spectrum grow light faithfully mimics natural light without harmful UV rays.

Is Ludisia discolor toxic to pets and children?

Ludisia discolor is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs, and young children.

This terrestrial orchid contains no known irritating or poisonous compounds, unlike many other houseplants. It does not belong to any botanical genera listed as dangerous by veterinary or pediatric poison control centers.

That said, ingestion of plant parts is not recommended for any living being: an edible plant is not a plant to eat, and accidental ingestion of large quantities may cause mild digestive discomfort.

What precautions should you take on a daily basis?

Even though Ludisia discolor is harmless, place it out of reach if you have cats or curious young children: its velvety foliage may tempt hands and paws, and its delicate stems do not tolerate handling well.

You can therefore enjoy this jewel orchid with peace of mind in any room in your home, including children's bedrooms and living spaces shared with your pets.

Why are the leaves of my Ludisia discolor turning yellow?

The leaves of the Ludisia discolor most often turn yellow due to overwatering, insufficient light, or a nutrient deficiency.

  • If the leaves turn yellow and become limp, the problem is generally caused by overwatering, which leads to the early stages of root rot.
  • If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
  • If the yellowing is accompanied by small light-colored spots, a dull appearance, or fine webbing, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.

As the Ludisia discolor is a terrestrial orchid with fleshy stems, it is particularly vulnerable to excess moisture in the growing medium: yellowing at the base of the stems accompanied by softening is often the first sign of root rot, which should be treated quickly.

Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.

In the event of a spider mite infestation, choose our biological spider mite control solutions, which are effective and safe for the plant.

When and how should I repot my Ludisia discolor?

The Ludisia discolor is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.

Repotting is necessary when:

  • roots emerge through the drainage holes,
  • growth slows down,
  • or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.

As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.

After receiving your Ludisia discolor, wait 2 to 3 weeks before repotting to allow the plant to acclimate to its new environment.

As the Ludisia discolor is a low-growing, spreading terrestrial orchid, choose wide, shallow pots, which perfectly suit its shallow root system.

Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, and make sure it has drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.

We recommend our premium potting mixes made in France, designed for drainage, aeration, and healthy growth.

  1. Gently remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
  2. Gently untangle the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
  3. Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in around it without burying the crown.

Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.

When and how should I fertilize my Ludisia discolor?

Fertilize the Ludisia discolor every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.

From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's vegetative rest period.

Properly dosed fertilizer promotes:

  • denser, more colorful foliage,
  • steady growth,
  • and greater plant resilience.

Remember to dilute the fertilizer to half the recommended strength: like most orchids, the Ludisia discolor is sensitive to over-fertilization, which can burn its delicate roots.

👉 For best results, we recommend our concentrated liquid fertilizer for tropical plants, which is easy to dose and delivers quickly visible results.

Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry potting mix: this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.

How to properly water my Ludisia discolor?

Water the Ludisia discolor when the top 1 to 2 cm of the potting mix has dried out, which is approximately every 7 to 10 days in summer and every 10 to 15 days in winter. Use room-temperature water, ideally filtered or left to stand for 24 hours.

How do you know when to water?

The finger test remains the most reliable method: insert your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the potting mix. If the mix is dry, it is time to water.

The Ludisia discolor is a terrestrial orchid with fleshy stems that stores little water: unlike other epiphytic orchids, it cannot tolerate being completely dry for too long, but it is even more sensitive to prolonged excess moisture.

Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than excess, which causes root rot.

How do I propagate my Ludisia discolor?

Ludisia discolor is propagated by stem cuttings, ideally in spring or early summer when the plant is in its active growth phase.

Stem cuttingSelect a healthy stem with at least 2 to 3 nodes and one or two leaves. Cut just below a node using our stainless steel straight-tip pruning shears for a clean cut without crushing the stem. Remove the lower leaves, leaving only 1 to 2 leaves at the top.

  1. Prepare the cutting by making a clean cut just below a node and let the cut air-dry for 1 to 2 hours before placing it in a rooting medium.
  2. Place the cutting in one of our clear pots so you can monitor root development, filled with slightly moist live sphagnum moss, which maintains ideal humidity without drowning the cutting.
  3. Place in a warm, bright location away from direct sunlight, at a temperature of 20 to 25°C. Cover with a clear dome or plastic bag to maintain high humidity.

Rooting usually takes 3 to 5 weeks. Once the roots are well developed, transplant into our all-purpose potting mix enriched with essential nutrients, suitable for terrestrial orchids such as Ludisia discolor.

Important tip 🌿Regularly check the moisture of the sphagnum moss: it should remain slightly moist but never waterlogged. The first signs of success are the appearance of small white roots visible through the clear pot, followed by the growth of a new leaf.

The essentials regarding Ludisia Discolor

Ludisia discolor: identity and origin of the jewel orchid

The Ludisia discolor, commonly known as the jewel orchid, is a terrestrial orchid of the Orchidaceae family, native to the shaded forests of Southeast Asia: Malaysia, Indonesia, southern China, and Thailand. It differs radically from classic epiphytic orchids with its velvety burgundy foliage crisscrossed by golden veins, which is its main attraction. Its fleshy creeping stems allow it to form, at maturity, a spread-out and dense habit that is highly appreciated by collectors.

Ludisia care: light, watering, and substrate

Ludisia appreciates soft indirect light, away from direct sunlight which irremediably fades its graphic foliage. Thoughtful watering is key: wait until the substrate dries on the surface before watering, about every 7 to 10 days during the active growth period. To offer it the best root environment, opt for our universal substrate enriched with beneficial fungi that multiply root absorption, ideal for terrestrial orchids.

Where to place your Ludisia for always bright foliage?

  • Indirect light: north or east window, or set back from a veiled south window.
  • Ambient humidity: maintain 50 to 70% to recall shaded tropical forests.
  • Temperature: ideally between 18 and 25°C, without cold drafts.
  • Insufficient light: compensate with our full spectrum horticultural lamp, or complete with our Care Pack to maintain optimal humidity.

Frequently asked questions: why do the golden veins of my Ludisia discolor fade?

The golden veins of the Ludisia discolor fade mainly due to excessive exposure to direct light or a lack of ambient humidity. If the plant receives direct sun, even for a few hours, the leaf pigments are irreversibly altered. A humidity level below 40% can also dry out the characteristic velvet of the leaves. To preserve the shine of the foliage, make sure to place the Ludisia discolor in a room with sufficient ambient humidity and never place it directly behind a sunny window. After receipt, wait 2 to 3 weeks before any repotting for a smooth acclimatization.
