About

Nepenthes 'Gaya': the tropical carnivorous plant with hanging pitchers

Nepenthes 'Gaya', or tropical pitcher plant, is a tropical carnivorous plant resulting from the crossbreeding of three Asian species: Nepenthes khasiana × (N. ventricosa × N. maxima). At the end of its light green leaves, a tendril terminates in a bulbous pitcher equipped with a lid, often yellow-green mottled with red. The nectar at the mouth attracts insects, which slip into the digestive fluid. A robust hybrid, it tolerates our interiors better than most Nepenthes and grows all year round, without a winter rest period.

  • Foliage: evergreen, light green leaves extended by hanging pitchers.
  • Light: bright and indirect, without scorching midday sun.
  • Watering: rainwater or demineralized water only, substrate always moist.
  • Pets: no known toxicity for cats and dogs.
  • Location: bright bathroom, east-facing window, in a pot or hanging.
  • Packaging: 1 plant in a 12 cm pot, 17 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.

An amazing and easy carnivorous plant, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know about Nepenthes 'Gaya' - Nepenthes, carnivorous plant - 12cm pot - Height 17cm

Is Nepenthes 'Gaya' toxic to cats and dogs?

Nepenthes 'Gaya' has no known toxicity to cats and dogs. The North Carolina State University database classifies the Nepenthes genus as non-toxic to cats and dogs, and BBC Gardeners' World reports no toxic effects. The liquid in the pitchers is not dangerous. Still, keep it out of reach of a playful cat, as the pitchers break easily and do not grow back on the same leaf.

How large can a Nepenthes 'Gaya' grow?

A Nepenthes 'Gaya' remains compact during its first few years, then develops stems that lengthen and become trailing or climbing. When well cultivated, it can thus form stems of more than one meter. The delivered plant measures 17 cm in a 12 cm pot. Pruning in spring helps maintain a bushy plant: the cut stems produce new growth at the base and can be propagated by cuttings.

How to water a Nepenthes 'Gaya'?

A Nepenthes 'Gaya' should only be watered with rainwater or demineralized water, as the lime and salts in tap water burn its roots. Keep the substrate always moist, but not waterlogged, and empty the saucer after watering: unlike the Sarracenia, it should not stand in water permanently. Water about twice a week in summer, slightly less in winter, and never empty the pitchers.

Where to place a Nepenthes 'Gaya' in the house?

A Nepenthes 'Gaya' is ideally placed near an east or west-facing window, in a bright and slightly humid room such as a bathroom with a window or a bright kitchen. It needs bright light to form pitchers, but not the scorching midday sun through glass. Avoid proximity to radiators and cold drafts. When suspended, its hanging pitchers are particularly decorative.

Why are my Nepenthes 'Gaya' pitchers drying out?

Nepenthes 'Gaya' pitchers naturally dry out as they age: each lives for several weeks to a few months, then turns brown, often after having captured insects. If many pitchers dry out at the same time, the air is too dry, the plant has lacked water, or it has been moved recently. Cut the dry pitchers flush with the tendril, increase the humidity, and keep the substrate moist: new pitchers appear on the young leaves.

When and how to repot a Nepenthes 'Gaya'?

A Nepenthes 'Gaya' should be repotted approximately every 2 years, in spring, when the substrate has compacted or the roots fill the pot. Choose a pot just slightly larger, with good drainage, and a lean, airy potting mix, such as sphagnum moss and perlite, or blonde peat, perlite, and pine bark, without any fertilizer. Handle the roots gently, then water with rainwater and keep the plant out of the sun for a few days.

Should a Nepenthes 'Gaya' be fed insects?

A Nepenthes 'Gaya' does not need to be fed by hand: indoors, it catches fungus gnats, flies, and ants on its own thanks to the nectar in its pitchers. Never add regular fertilizer to the potting mix, as it would burn the roots, and do not put meat in the pitchers, as it would rot. If your home has very few insects, place a dead insect in a pitcher occasionally during the spring or summer.

The essentials about Nepenthes 'Gaya' - Nepenthes, carnivorous plant - 12cm pot - Height 17cm

Nepenthes 'Gaya': characteristics and benefits

The Nepenthes 'Gaya' belongs to the Nepenthaceae family, which contains only one genus, Nepenthes, with over 150 species from Southeast Asia, Madagascar, India and Australia. This hybrid cultivar, sometimes sold under the name 'St. Gaya', combines Nepenthes khasiana, the only species in India, native to the Khasi Hills, with a hybrid of N. ventricosa, from the Philippines, and N. maxima, from Sulawesi and New Guinea. It inherits a good tolerance to temperature fluctuations and the drier air of our homes. Its pitchers grow at the end of a tendril that extends from each leaf: the first ones, resting on the ground, are squat; the aerial pitchers on the adult stems are more elongated. Over time, the stems lengthen and become trailing or climbing.

Where to place the Nepenthes 'Gaya'? Light and location

The Nepenthes 'Gaya' likes bright, indirect light. A bathroom with a window, a bright kitchen or a windowsill are all suitable locations, as it benefits from the morning light and ambient humidity. Avoid scorching sunlight through a south-facing window, radiators and cold drafts. When suspended, its pitchers hang beautifully. It easily finds its place among our other bathroom plants.

How to care for the Nepenthes 'Gaya'?

  • Watering: use only rainwater or demineralised water; keep the substrate moist but never waterlogged.
  • Light: bright and indirect; a little gentle morning sun is acceptable.
  • Temperature: 18 to 28°C all year round; never below 12°C.
  • Humidity: 60% or more for beautiful pitchers.
  • Fertiliser: never; the plant feeds on the insects it captures.

Why is my Nepenthes 'Gaya' no longer producing pitchers?

A Nepenthes 'Gaya' that no longer produces pitchers most often lacks light or humidity. Tendrils form but remain dry instead of swelling into pitchers. Move the plant closer to a bright window, away from scorching sunlight, and increase the humidity around it with a tray of damp clay pebbles or by placing it in a bathroom. Hard water, fertiliser or overly rich substrate also inhibit growth. After moving it, allow a few weeks for new pitchers to appear.
