Everything you need to know about Standard Olive Tree (Olea europaea) large evergreen specimen - 24cm pot - Height 160cm
Is the olive tree on a stem toxic to cats and dogs?
No, the standard olive tree (Olea europaea) is not known to be toxic to cats or dogs: horticultural references attribute no toxicity to it for pets. At worst, a pet chewing on a leaf may experience mild digestive upset, as with any tough plant. Raw olives are very bitter and rarely consumed. You can therefore plant this tree on a patio or balcony frequented by your pets.
How tall can a potted olive tree grow?
In a pot, a standard olive tree generally grows to a height of between 1.50 and 3 m, depending on the size of the container and how often you prune it. It grows slowly, by about 10 to 30 cm a year. In the ground in southern France, an olive tree can eventually reach 6 to 10 m. The standard olive tree supplied is 160 cm tall and comes in a 24 cm pot: light pruning each spring is then enough to maintain a round, compact shape.
How to water a potted olive tree?
Water your potted olive tree when the top 3 to 5 cm of soil is dry, pouring until water drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. In summer, this means once or twice a week, more frequently during heatwaves. In winter, a light watering every 3 to 4 weeks is enough, or none at all if the pot receives rain. The olive tree tolerates drought much better than too much water, which causes its roots to rot.
What exposure is best for a potted standard olive tree?
A potted olive tree on a standard needs full sun, at least six hours a day, and warmth. A south- or west-facing patio, an open balcony, or a sheltered courtyard in front of a warm wall are ideal. In partial shade, it survives but its top becomes sparse, its branches become leggy, and it does not flower. Indoors, the olive tree quickly declines: it should only spend the winter there, in a cool and very bright room.
Why are the leaves of my standard olive tree turning yellow?
Yellowing leaves on a potted olive tree most often indicate overwatering: waterlogged soil, a saucer full of water, or a pot without drainage holes. Let it dry out and check the drainage. Yellowing of the older leaves in spring can also indicate a nitrogen deficiency, which can be corrected with olive tree fertilizer. Finally, an olive tree kept in a warm, dark room will turn yellow and lose its leaves: it needs light and a cool environment.
When should you repot a potted olive tree?
Repot your bare root olive tree in spring, between March and May, once the risk of frost has passed. Supplied in a 24 cm nursery pot, it should be planted out quickly into a 40- to 50-litre container, heavy enough not to tip over in the wind and with good drainage holes. Use a well-draining mix: multipurpose compost and one-third coarse sand or pumice. Then, repot every 3 to 4 years and refresh the topsoil each spring.
How to protect a potted olive tree from frost?
A potted olive tree on a standard is more sensitive to cold than one planted in the ground, as its roots freeze quickly. As soon as frosts below -5°C are forecast, move it indoors to a bright, frost-free area between 5 and 10°C, or protect it outdoors: wrap horticultural fleece around the crown, bubble wrap or a mat around the pot, elevate the pot on blocks, and place it against a sheltered wall. Water sparingly during winter and remove the fleece during warm spells.
The essentials about Standard Olive Tree (Olea europaea) large evergreen specimen - 24cm pot - Height 160cm
Standard olive tree: characteristics and benefits
Theolive tree, Olea europaea, is a member of the olive family that has been cultivated for millennia around the Mediterranean. Grown as a standard, it has a straight, clear trunk topped with a rounded head of fine branches. Its small, narrow, leathery leaves are grey-green on top and silvery underneath, giving the foliage shimmering highlights in the wind. In spring, mature plants bear small, discreet clusters of creamy-white flowers. The olive tree is a very long-lived, slow-growing tree: in a pot, it retains its shape for a long time, and this 160 cm specimen immediately has the appearance of a small tree.
Where to plant the standard olive tree? Exposure and hardiness
Place the standard olive tree in the sunniest spot: a south-facing terrace, a sheltered courtyard, or an open garden. It loves heat and is highly tolerant of drought, sea breezes and alkaline soil. It is semi-hardy: it can withstand temperatures down to around -10°C when planted in the ground in well-established, dry soil, but much less in a pot, as the roots are exposed. The ground is suitable in southern France, along the Atlantic coast and in cities with mild winters; elsewhere, a large pot allows it to be sheltered. To complete a Mediterranean-style setting, pair it with our Mediterranean plants.
How to care for the standard olive tree?
Soil: well-drained, poor to moderately fertile, and alkaline.
Planting: in spring, after the last frosts.
Watering: regularly in summer when in a pot, and very sparingly in winter.
Pruning: light pruning in spring, removing shoots from the trunk.
Fertilisation: citrus and olive fertiliser from March to September when in a pot.
Why is my potted olive tree losing its leaves?
A potted olive tree losing its leaves almost always suffers from a watering problem. Too much water, especially in winter or with a saucer full of water, suffocates the roots: the leaves turn yellow and then fall. Too little water in the height of summer causes them to dry out and curl. A sudden change in light, for example when the tree is brought into a dark room, also causes significant leaf loss. Finally, a frost can turn the foliage brown. Address the cause: the standard olive tree will grow new leaves the following spring as long as the branches remain green under the bark.
