About
Opuntia rubescens: the paddle cactus that grows like a small tree
Opuntia rubescens, now classified in the genus Consolea, is a paddle cactus native to the West Indies and Puerto Rico. Unlike bushy prickly pears, it forms a straight trunk bearing elongated, plain green paddles that are almost thornless. In full sun, its paddles can take on reddish hues, hence its Latin name. Its graphic silhouette makes it an original houseplant for a well-exposed window.
Foliage: flat, elongated green paddles with small, widely spaced spines.
Light: very bright, appreciates direct sunlight after acclimatization.
Watering: when the soil is dry throughout its depth, almost nothing in winter.
Animals: spines and fine prickly bristles, to be placed out of reach of cats and dogs.
Location: sunny windowsill, conservatory, balcony in summer.
Packaging: 1 Opuntia rubescens in a 12 cm pot, 35 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.
A sculptural and very understated cactus, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Opuntia rubescens (Consolea) - Tree-like paddle cactus - 12 cm pot - Height 35 cm
Is Opuntia rubescens dangerous for cats and dogs?
Opuntia rubescens is not known to have toxic sap, but it should still be kept away from cats and dogs. Its spines and especially its glochids—tiny clusters of barbed bristles on the areoles—can easily embed themselves in the skin, paws, or mouth of a curious animal and are difficult to remove. Place it out of reach or away from high-traffic areas, and handle it with thick gloves or a folded sheet of newspaper around the pads.
How tall can an Opuntia rubescens grow indoors?
Indoors, an Opuntia rubescens grows slowly and can reach about 1 m to 1.50 m in several years, depending on the light and the size of the pot. In the West Indies, its natural habitat, it becomes a several-meter-tall cactus tree with a real trunk. The delivered plant measures about 35 cm, in a 12 cm pot. The more sunlight it receives, the more compact it remains, with thick, vibrant green pads.
How to water an Opuntia rubescens?
Water your Opuntia rubescens only when the soil is dry throughout the pot. In spring and summer, this means watering every 2 to 3 weeks, thoroughly moistening the entire root ball and then emptying the saucer. From November to February, the plant is dormant: a light watering once a month is enough, or none at all in a cool room. It is better to forget to water than to overwater: excess water causes the base to rot.
Where to place an Opuntia rubescens indoors?
Place your Opuntia rubescens in front of the sunniest window in the house, ideally south or west-facing, or in a conservatory. This Caribbean cactus loves direct sunlight, provided you gradually acclimate it if it has been coming from a less brightly lit area. Away from a window, it becomes leggy: its new pads grow thin, pale, and droopy. In summer, a warm balcony does it a lot of good.
Why does my Opuntia rubescens have soft pads?
Soft pads on an Opuntia rubescens are most often caused by overwatering, especially in winter or in a pot without a drainage hole. Suffocated roots rot and the base turns black. Stop watering, let it dry out completely and, if the base is affected, cut off the healthy parts to propagate them. Wrinkled but firm pads in the height of summer, on the other hand, indicate thirst: a generous watering will plump them up again in a few days.
How to propagate Opuntia rubescens?
To propagate an Opuntia rubescens, detach a healthy pad at its point of attachment in spring or summer, using thick gloves. Let it dry for one to two weeks in the shade until the wound has calloused over. Then place it upright, buried 2 to 3 cm deep, in a dry cactus potting mix. Water lightly only after two weeks: roots will appear within a few weeks.
What is the difference between Opuntia rubescens and the prickly pear?
Opuntia rubescens and the prickly pear cactus are both paddle cacti, but they differ in growth habit. Opuntia rubescens, which belongs to the genus Consolea, forms a straight trunk bearing elongated, sparsely spined paddles, resembling a small tree. The prickly pear cactus, Opuntia ficus-indica, grows as a wide bush with oval paddles and produces edible figs. Opuntia rubescens is also more sensitive to cold: it is an indoor plant in France.
The essentials about Opuntia rubescens (Consolea) - Tree-like paddle cactus - 12 cm pot - Height 35 cm
Opuntia rubescens: characteristics and benefits
TheOpuntia rubescens, which botanists now place in the genus Consolea (Consolea rubescens), is a cactus in the Cactaceae family native to the Caribbean: Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and the Lesser Antilles. In the wild, it grows into a true tree cactus several metres tall, with a cylindrical trunk and branches made up of flat pads. It is this tree-like growth habit that sets it apart from the prickly pear, Opuntia ficus-indica, which is bushier. Its elongated pads, with slightly wavy edges, feature light mottling and few spines. In bright sunlight, they sometimes turn red. Indoors, it grows slowly and can remain a houseplant for many years.
Where to place the Opuntia rubescens? Light and location
The Opuntia rubescens requires as much light as possible: a south- or west-facing windowsill, a conservatory or a winter garden. The more sunlight it receives, the more compact it remains and the thicker its pads grow. In summer, it enjoys spending time outdoors on a warm balcony, but should be brought back inside as soon as night-time temperatures drop below 10°C. Place it out of the way and out of reach of children and pets because of its spines. To create a desert-themed display, pair it with our other cacti and succulents.
How to care for the Opuntia rubescens?
Watering: when the soil is dry throughout, almost nothing in winter.
Light: very bright, gradually acclimated to direct sunlight.
Temperature: 18 to 30°C during the growing season, resting at around 10 to 15°C in winter.
Potting mix: very well-draining, specially formulated for cacti and succulents.
Fertiliser: a cactus fertiliser once a month from April to September.
Why are my Opuntia rubescens pads soft or falling off?
Pads that are soft, wrinkled or turning black at the base almost always indicate overwatering, especially in winter when the plant is dormant. Stop watering, let the root ball dry out completely and check that the pot drains well. If the pads are wrinkled but firm in the height of summer, the Opuntia rubescens is actually thirsty: a generous watering is all it needs. Thin, pale pads that are stretching out indicate a lack of light. A fallen pad is not lost: it can be easily propagated.
