About

Chinese windmill palm: the hardiest palm for an exotic garden

The Chinese windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), also known as the hemp palm, is the palm that best withstands French winters. Native to the mountains of central China, it forms a single trunk covered with a thick brown fibrous husk, crowned by large fan-shaped fronds. It grows in the ground almost anywhere in France and also thrives in a large pot on a terrace. Its exotic silhouette immediately brings a holiday atmosphere to the garden.

  • Foliage: evergreen, large dark green fan-shaped fronds, divided into rigid segments.
  • Exposure: sun or partial shade, sheltered from strong winds that tear the fronds.
  • Watering: regular during the first year, then moderate; in a pot, as soon as the top of the substrate is dry.
  • Animals: non-toxic to cats and dogs according to the ASPCA.
  • Hardiness: down to around -15°C for a well-established plant in well-drained soil.
  • Packaging, 2 sizes to choose from: in a 21 cm nursery pot, height 85 to 100 cm; or in a 27 cm nursery pot, height 120 to 160 cm. Without decorative pot.

Everything you need to know about Chinese Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) - hardy palm

Is the Chinese windmill palm Trachycarpus fortunei toxic to cats?

No, the Chinese windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) is not toxic to cats or dogs: the ASPCA, the leading American authority on animal toxicology, classifies it as non-toxic. However, its fronds remain stiff, and the petioles of young plants have small teeth along the edges. A pet that chews on a frond is most likely to experience slight irritation in its mouth. You can therefore safely place it on a patio or in a garden frequented by your pets.

How tall does a Trachycarpus fortunei grow in a garden?

In a French garden, a Trachycarpus fortunei generally reaches a height of 5 to 10 m after several decades, with a crown 2 to 3 m wide. In its natural habitat, it sometimes exceeds 12 m. Its growth is slow in the first few years, then it gains about 20 to 30 cm per year once well established in the ground. In a pot, its size remains more modest. The delivered specimens measure 85 to 100 cm or 120 to 160 cm depending on the size chosen.

How to water a potted Chinese windmill palm?

Water a potted Chinese windmill palm as soon as the top few centimetres of the growing medium feel dry, thoroughly moistening the root ball until water drains from the bottom. In summer, this usually means watering once or twice a week. In winter, water much less frequently: once a month is enough if the pot remains outdoors and receives rain. Trachycarpus fortunei is particularly sensitive to waterlogging, so always empty the saucer and choose a pot with good drainage.

Can Trachycarpus fortunei tolerate shade?

Yes, Trachycarpus fortunei tolerates partial shade and even light shade, which is rare among palms. It grows a little more slowly in these conditions, with longer petioles and broader fronds. It also does very well in full sun, provided that young specimens are watered in summer. Its real weakness is wind: in a very exposed location, its large fronds become shredded. A sheltered spot near a wall or hedge is ideal.

Why are the fronds of my Trachycarpus fortunei turning yellow?

The yellowing of the lower fronds of a Trachycarpus fortunei is natural: each year, the oldest ones dry out while new ones emerge from the heart. Simply cut them off at the base. If several fronds turn yellow at the same time, the soil is often too wet, especially in winter or in a pot without drainage. Brown tips rather indicate a lack of water in summer or drying winds. General yellowing in spring can finally indicate a deficiency, corrected by a palm fertilizer.

When to plant a Trachycarpus fortunei in the ground?

The best time to plant a Trachycarpus fortunei in the ground is in spring, from April to June, once the severe frosts have passed. The palm tree then has the whole growing season to develop its roots before its first winter. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, add gravel to the bottom if the soil is heavy, and water thoroughly. In the south of France, planting in early autumn is also possible, as long as the soil remains warm.

How to protect a Trachycarpus fortunei from frost in winter?

A well-established Trachycarpus fortunei in the ground can withstand temperatures down to around -15°C without protection. Young plants and potted palms are more vulnerable. When severe frosts are forecast, gather the fronds upwards with soft twine and wrap the crown in a winter cover to protect the heart. Mulch around the base and place the pot on blocks, sheltered from cold rain. Remove the protection as soon as the weather warms up to prevent rot.

The essentials about Chinese Windmill Palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) - hardy palm

Trachycarpus fortunei: characteristics and benefits

The Chinese windmill palm, Trachycarpus fortunei, is a palm tree in the Arecaceae family native to the mountains of central and eastern China, where it naturally experiences cold winters. This is why it has become the benchmark hardy palm in Europe. Its single trunk is covered with a brown fibrous husk, which was once used to make ropes and rainwear, hence its other name, hemp palm. Its large, deep green fan-shaped fronds spread out at the end of long petioles. In a French garden, it grows to a height of 5 to 10 m over time while remaining narrow: it can therefore find its place even in a small garden.

Where to plant Trachycarpus fortunei? Exposure and hardiness

Trachycarpus fortunei should be planted in sun or partial shade, preferably sheltered from prevailing winds. It can withstand frosts of around -15 °C when well established in soil that does not remain waterlogged in winter, allowing it to grow outdoors in most regions, from the Brittany coast to Alsace. In regions with the harshest winters, protect the heart of young plants during severe cold. To create a hardy tropical corner, pair it with our hardy banana trees and exotic plants.

How to care for Trachycarpus fortunei?

  • Soil: ordinary, deep and above all well-drained, even alkaline.
  • Planting: in spring, after the frosts, so that it can establish its roots before winter.
  • Watering: regularly during the first year, then only in summer during dry weather.
  • Pruning: remove dry fronds at the base, nothing else.
  • Fertilisation: a palm tree or green plant fertiliser in spring and summer.

Why are the leaves of my Trachycarpus fortunei turning yellow?

It is normal for the lowest fronds to turn yellow and then dry out one by one: the palm tree renews its foliage from the heart. If several fronds turn yellow at the same time, look for an issue with watering. Waterlogged soil or a full saucer can suffocate the roots, especially in winter. Conversely, a Trachycarpus fortunei in a pot that has been forgotten in the height of summer will show dry, brown tips. General yellowing in spring can also indicate a deficiency: a palm tree fertiliser can correct this in a few weeks. After a severe winter, frost-damaged fronds can be cut off as soon as the heart starts growing again.
