Everything you need to know about Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) - evergreen exotic palm
Is the Canary Island date palm Phoenix canariensis toxic to animals?
The Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) is not toxic to cats and dogs: the ASPCA classifies it as non-toxic. The real danger comes from its spines. The leaflets at the base of each frond are transformed into long, hard points, capable of injuring a curious animal or a child, particularly in the eyes. Keep it away from play areas and walkways, and always handle it with thick gloves.
How tall can a Phoenix canariensis grow?
When planted in the ground in the south of France, a Phoenix canariensis can grow to over 10 m tall with a crown 6 to 8 m wide, but it takes several decades. In a pot, its size remains limited by the volume of the container: it generally reaches 1.5 to 3 m, making it a spectacular but manageable patio plant. Its growth is slow in the first few years, then accelerates once the trunk has formed. The plants delivered measure 80 cm, 130 cm or 170 cm depending on the size chosen.
How to water a potted Canary Island date palm?
Water a potted Canary Island date palm when the top 3 to 5 cm of soil is dry. From May to September, water once or twice a week, pouring until water drains from the bottom, then empty the saucer. In autumn, gradually reduce watering. In winter, especially if kept in a cool place, watering lightly once a month is sufficient. The Phoenix canariensis tolerates some drought, but too much water in winter will rot its roots.
Can a Phoenix canariensis be left outside in winter?
A Phoenix canariensis can stay outdoors in winter only in regions with mild winters: the Mediterranean coast, the southern Atlantic coast, and Corsica. It can withstand around -6°C (21°F) when the soil is dry, and slightly lower temperatures when it is large and established. Elsewhere, bring it indoors before the first frosts to a conservatory, bright garage, or cool room, between 5 and 12°C (41–54°F). If it stays outdoors, wrap the crown in winter fleece and insulate the pot.
Why are my Phoenix canariensis fronds turning yellow?
The lower fronds of a Phoenix canariensis naturally yellow as it ages: cut them flush with the trunk. If the yellowing affects the center, first check the watering: waterlogged soil in winter suffocates the roots. A palm tree kept in a dark, warm room will also yellow due to a lack of light. In spring, pale foliage often indicates a magnesium or potassium deficiency, which can be corrected with a palm tree fertilizer.
When to repot a Canary Island date palm Phoenix canariensis?
Repot a Canary Island date palm (Phoenix canariensis) in spring, from April to June, every 2 to 3 years or as soon as roots emerge from the bottom of the pot. Choose a container that is deeper than it is wide, heavy to prevent it from tipping over in the wind, and with drainage holes. Use a well-draining potting mix and firm it down lightly. Wear thick gloves and safety glasses: the spines at the base of the fronds are formidable.
What is the difference between Phoenix canariensis and Phoenix roebelenii?
Phoenix canariensis and Phoenix roebelenii are two date palms of the same genus, but of very different sizes. The Canary Island date palm is a large semi-hardy outdoor palm, with a massive trunk and several-meter-long dark green fronds, which can withstand light frosts. The Phoenix roebelenii, or dwarf date palm, stays under 2 to 3 m, has fine and flexible foliage and does not tolerate frost: it is mainly grown indoors in France.
The essentials about Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) - evergreen exotic palm
Phoenix canariensis: characteristics and benefits
The Canary Island date palm, Phoenix canariensis, is a palm tree in the Arecaceae family, endemic to the Canary Islands. A close relative of the date palm, it is distinguished by its single, massive trunk, a much denser crown and very long, arching pinnate fronds of a bright dark green. Its orange dates are decorative but thin-fleshed and have no culinary appeal. Planted on the French Riviera since the 19th century, it has become the symbol of Mediterranean promenades. In southern France, it can grow to over 10 m tall over time; in a pot, it remains much more modest and makes a superb patio plant.
Where to plant Phoenix canariensis? Exposure and hardiness
Phoenix canariensis requires full sun and a warm location sheltered from cold winds. It is semi-hardy: it can withstand temperatures down to around -6°C, slightly lower when large and well established in dry soil. It should therefore only be planted in the ground around the Mediterranean coast and in coastal areas with very mild winters. Everywhere else, grow it in a large pot on a sunny patio and bring it into a conservatory or frost-free, well-lit room for winter. To complete an exotic corner, pair it with our hardy banana plants and exotic plants.
How to care for Phoenix canariensis?
Soil: deep, rich and well-drained; in a pot, use a well-drained potting mix.
Planting: in spring, only in mild regions for planting in the ground.
Watering: generously in summer, and very sparingly in winter.
Pruning: remove only dry fronds, wearing gloves and eye protection.
Fertilisation: palm fertiliser once a month from May to August.
Is Phoenix canariensis threatened by the red palm weevil?
In southern France, Phoenix canariensis is the favourite target of the red palm weevil and the Paysandisia archon moth, whose larvae tunnel into the heart and trunk. The risk is low for a young palm in a pot, but watch for warning signs: drooping central fronds, holes or sawdust at the base of the fronds, and a misshapen heart. If in doubt, contact your local town hall or regional FREDON, as control measures are strictly regulated. Also avoid pruning green fronds in summer: fresh wounds attract these insects.
