About

Dwarf palm: Southern Europe's compact palm, clump-forming or with a trunk

The dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) is one of only two palm species native to Europe: it grows wild along the coasts of Spain, Italy, and North Africa. It forms a dense clump of several short trunks, topped with stiff fan-shaped fronds. Its slow growth and manageable size make it the ideal palm for a terrace, balcony, or small sunny garden. The version with a clear trunk creates the silhouette of a small tree.

  • Foliage: evergreen, fan-shaped fronds ranging from bright green to blue-green, very stiff.
  • Exposure: preferably full sun, partial shade tolerated.
  • Watering: moderate; it is drought-tolerant once established in the ground.
  • Animals: petioles armed with sharp spines, to be kept out of reach of cats, dogs, and children.
  • Hardiness: down to approximately -12°C in well-drained soil.
  • Packaging, 3 sizes to choose from: in a 21 cm nursery pot, 90 cm tall; in a 24 cm nursery pot, 130 cm tall; or with a trunk, in a 24 cm nursery pot, 160 cm tall. Without decorative pot.

An understated and robust Mediterranean palm, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know about Mediterranean dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) - evergreen palm

Is the Chamaerops humilis dwarf palm dangerous to animals?

The dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) is not on the ASPCA list of toxic plants, but it is not without risk to your pets: the petioles of its fronds bear many hard and sharp spines. A dog playing around it or a cat rubbing against it can injure itself, especially in the eyes. Place it away from play areas, out of the way of walkways, and always wear thick gloves when handling or pruning it.

How tall can a Chamaerops humilis grow?

A Chamaerops humilis generally reaches a height of 2 to 4 m at maturity, sometimes more in southern France, and 2 to 3 m wide when grown in a clump. Its growth is slow: it gains a few dozen centimetres a year at best, making it an easy palm tree to keep in a pot for many years. Depending on the size chosen, the delivered specimens measure 90 cm, 130 cm or 160 cm for the trunked version.

How to water a potted Chamaerops humilis?

Water your potted Chamaerops humilis when the soil is dry 3 to 5 cm deep, pouring until water drains out the bottom. In summer, water once or twice a week depending on the heat and the size of the pot. In autumn and winter, reduce watering significantly: once a month is often enough. The dwarf palm tolerates being overlooked better than overwatering, so always empty the saucer to prevent root rot.

Can the dwarf palm Chamaerops humilis tolerate partial shade?

Yes, the dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) tolerates partial shade, but it looks its best in full sun. In partial shade, it grows more slowly, its fronds become longer, and the crown less dense. It does very well on an east- or west-facing terrace. However, avoid deep shade and dark interiors: this Mediterranean palm needs bright light and warmth to remain compact.

Why are the leaves of my Chamaerops humilis turning yellow?

The lower fronds of a Chamaerops humilis naturally turn yellow as they age: simply cut them off at the base. If the yellowing also affects the central fronds, the most common cause is overwatering, especially in winter or in a poorly drained pot. A lack of fertilizer in a pot also causes pale, yellowish foliage in spring. Finally, brown spots after winter indicate frost damage, which is not serious as long as the core remains green.

When to repot a Chamaerops humilis in a pot?

Repot a Chamaerops humilis in spring every 2 to 3 years when roots emerge from the bottom or begin to circle. Choose a container just slightly larger, heavy and well-drained, and a free-draining mix based on multipurpose compost and gravel. The dwarf palm likes its roots to be slightly confined. In years when repotting is not necessary, simply replace the top 5 centimetres of soil with fresh compost.

Can the Chamaerops humilis stay outside in winter?

Yes, Chamaerops humilis can stay outdoors all year round in most regions of western and southern France: it can withstand temperatures down to around -12°C in well-drained soil. Wet cold is more dangerous than dry cold. In a pot, the roots freeze more quickly than when planted in the ground: during severe frosts, wrap the pot in a mat or bubble wrap, place it on blocks, and cover the crown with a winter fleece.

The essentials about Mediterranean dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) - evergreen palm

Chamaerops humilis: characteristics and benefits

The dwarf palm, Chamaerops humilis, belongs to the Arecaceae family. It is native to the western Mediterranean basin, from Portugal to Italy and the Maghreb, where it colonizes garrigue and coastal cliffs. It is one of only two native palm trees in Europe, along with the Cretan palm. It naturally forms a clump of several short stems, covered in brown fibres, from which grow rigid fan-shaped fronds, bright green to blue-green. Its growth is slow and, over the years, it generally reaches 2 to 4 m. The dwarf palm with a trunk is trained on a single clear trunk, creating the effect of a small exotic tree.

Where to plant the Chamaerops humilis? Exposure and hardiness

Plant the Chamaerops humilis in full sun, in a warm location: in front of a south-facing wall, on a terrace, or by the sea. It tolerates partial shade but grows more slowly there. In terms of cold, it can withstand around -12 °C in well-drained soil, which makes it suitable for planting outdoors along the Atlantic coast, in the South of France, and in many cities. In regions with harsher winters, prefer growing it in a large pot, which you can protect. For a Mediterranean-style setting, pair it with our Mediterranean plants.

How to care for the Chamaerops humilis?

  • Soil: well-drained, even poor, stony, or alkaline.
  • Planting: in spring, when the soil warms up.
  • Watering: regularly during the first year, then only during dry periods.
  • Pruning: remove dry fronds using gloves.
  • Fertilisation: use a palm fertiliser from April to August, especially when grown in a pot.

What is the difference between a clump-forming Chamaerops humilis and one with a trunk?

Both forms belong to the same species. The clump-forming Chamaerops humilis retains all its offshoots: it forms a wide, dense bush, ideal for filling a corner of a terrace or screening a view. The dwarf palm with a trunk has been trained on a single stem, cleared of its lower fronds: its silhouette resembles that of a small mature palm tree and leaves room for plants at its base. It simply requires the occasional removal of offshoots from the base. Its requirements for sun, water, and its hardiness are identical.

Buy the Chamaerops humilis from Plant and Stories
