Une question ?Nos experts vous répondent01 89 48 03 62
About
Philodendron selloum: the bushy philodendron with large, deeply cut leaves
The Philodendron selloum is a large tropical plant native to South America: southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Unlike climbing philodendrons, it grows in a clump without support and develops a short, thick stem as it ages. Its glossy green leaves, deeply cut into wavy lobes, spread out widely and create an instant jungle effect. Robust and generous, it is well suited to a bright living room.
Foliage: large, glossy green, deeply lobed leaves on long petioles.
Light: bright indirect light; bright partial shade is also acceptable.
Watering: when the top 2 to 3 centimetres of soil are dry; water more sparingly in winter.
Pets: toxic to cats and dogs (calcium oxalates); keep out of reach.
Location: living room, office, or conservatory, with plenty of space around it.
Packaging, choose from 2 sizes: 19 cm pot, 60 cm tall; or 21 cm pot, 90 cm tall. 1 plant in a nursery pot, without a decorative pot.
Large, easy-care tropical foliage, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Philodendron selloum - Shrubby Philodendron
Is Philodendron selloum toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Philodendron selloum is toxic to cats and dogs. Like all philodendrons, its leaves and stems contain calcium oxalate crystals. When chewed, they cause mouth irritation, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, and sometimes vomiting. Keep it out of reach of pets and young children, wear gloves when pruning it, and contact a veterinarian if ingested.
How large can a Philodendron selloum grow indoors?
Indoors, a Philodendron selloum generally reaches a height of 1 to 1.5 m and an equal, if not greater, width, as its leaves spread out in a clump. In nature or in a tropical garden, it exceeds 2 m and forms a thick stem. Here, it is delivered at 60 cm in a 19 cm pot or at 90 cm in a 21 cm pot. Therefore, provide an open space around it so that it can spread out, and a wider pot as it grows.
How to water a Philodendron selloum?
Water your Philodendron selloum when the top 2 to 3 centimeters of soil feel dry to the touch. Water the entire root ball, then empty the saucer after fifteen minutes. In spring and summer, this means watering about once a week; in winter, every 10 to 15 days, depending on the temperature of the room. Soil that is constantly waterlogged causes the lower leaves to turn yellow and the roots to rot.
Where to place a Philodendron selloum in the house?
Place your Philodendron selloum in a bright room, one or two meters from a window, away from scorching direct sunlight during the hottest hours. A bright living room, office, or tempered conservatory will suit it. It tolerates bright partial shade, but its leaves will be less deeply cut. Give it plenty of space, away from radiators and cold drafts, as its clump grows quickly. Rotate the pot from time to time so that it grows evenly.
Why are the leaves of my Philodendron selloum turning yellow?
Yellowing leaves on a Philodendron selloum most often signal overwatering: the soil remains damp for too long and the roots lack air. Let it dry out more and check the pot's drainage. A single old lower leaf turning yellow is normal: the plant is replacing it. Pale leaves and very long petioles rather indicate a lack of light, while brown edges point to too dry air.
How to propagate a Philodendron selloum?
Philodendron selloum is harder to propagate by cuttings than a climbing philodendron because it grows in a clump. The easiest way is to take a runner from the base with a few roots in spring, then pot it in a light potting mix kept just moist. You can also cut the top off a plant that has grown too tall, along with one or two aerial roots, and plant it: the base often produces new shoots.
What is the difference between Philodendron selloum and Monstera?
Philodendron selloum and Monstera deliciosa are two tropical aroids with large leaves, but they do not look alike up close. Philodendron selloum leaves are deeply lobed along the edges, without holes, and the plant grows in a self-supporting clump. Monstera has leaves with holes and splits, and climbs up a support. Both require bright indirect light and are toxic to animals.
The essentials about Philodendron selloum - Shrubby Philodendron
Philodendron selloum: characteristics and benefits
The Philodendron selloum, a member of the Araceae family, grows wild in southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northeastern Argentina. Kew botanists now classify it in the Thaumatophyllum genus (Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum), but it remains known everywhere as Philodendron selloum. Unlike climbing philodendrons, it grows as a self-supporting clump and develops a short, thick stem marked by the scars of former leaves over time. Its deeply lobed leaves, glossy green, can exceed 60 cm indoors. It also produces large aerial roots that add to its jungle plant appearance.
Where to place the Philodendron selloum? Light and location
The Philodendron selloum likes bright but filtered light. Place it in a bright living room or office, one or two meters from an east- or west-facing window, or behind a sheer curtain in the south. Allow plenty of space: the clump spreads quickly and can reach more than one meter wide. Avoid placing it near a radiator or in cold drafts. A heated conservatory is an excellent location for it. To create a tropical corner, pair it with other varieties from our Philodendron collection.
How to care for the Philodendron selloum?
Watering: when the top 2 to 3 centimeters are dry, without allowing water to stand.
Light: bright and indirect, away from the scorching midday sun.
Temperature: 18 to 27°C, never below 12°C.
Humidity: moderate to high, with misting during the heating season.
Fertilizer: houseplant fertilizer once a month from April to September.
What to do with the Philodendron selloum's aerial roots?
The aerial roots of the Philodendron selloum are normal: in nature, they anchor it to the ground and absorb moisture from the air. Indoors, guide them toward the pot, where they will root and strengthen the plant. You can cut off a particularly troublesome aerial root with clean pruning shears without serious consequences, but avoid removing them all. If the plant leans, these roots help stabilize it. Remember to wear gloves: Philodendron selloum sap is irritating.
