Une question ?Nos experts vous répondent01 89 48 03 62
About
Phoenix roebelenii: the dwarf date palm that brings exotic flair to your living room
The Phoenix roebelenii, or dwarf date palm, is a small palm native to Southeast Asia: Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and southern China. Its arched, finely divided, deep green fronds form a light crown atop a trunk that thickens over the years. Very slow-growing and compact, it retains its apartment-friendly proportions for a long time. It requires a bright room and mild temperatures year-round.
Foliage: flexible pinnate fronds, fine dark green leaflets, sharp spines at the base of the petioles.
Light: very bright, a few hours of soft sunlight appreciated.
Watering: when the top 2 to 3 centimetres of soil are dry, without allowing water to stagnate.
Pets: non-toxic to cats and dogs, but with sharp spines at the base of the fronds.
Location: near a bay window, on a veranda, or on a sheltered terrace in summer.
Packaging, 2 sizes to choose from: with trunk, in a 21 cm pot, 100 cm tall; or in a 27 cm pot, 140 cm tall. 1 plant in a nursery pot, without a decorative pot.
An elegant palm that is safe for your pets, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Phoenix roebelenii - Dwarf date palm
Is the Phoenix roebelenii toxic to cats and dogs?
No, the Phoenix roebelenii is not toxic to cats and dogs: the ASPCA classifies it as a non-toxic plant. However, you must remain vigilant because of its spines. The leaflets located at the base of each frond are transformed into rigid and sharp points, which can injure a playful animal or a child. Place it out of the way and handle it with gloves when repotting.
How tall can a Phoenix roebelenii grow indoors?
Indoors, a Phoenix roebelenii generally reaches a height of 1.5 to 2 m over several years, as its growth is slow. In its natural habitat in Southeast Asia, it rarely exceeds 3 m. Here, it is delivered at 100 cm with a 21 cm pot, or at 140 cm in a 27 cm pot. Its slow growth is an asset: it retains its shape for a long time without becoming cumbersome, and repotting every 2 to 3 years is enough to accommodate it.
How to water a Phoenix roebelenii?
Water your Phoenix roebelenii when the top 2 to 3 centimeters of soil feel dry to the touch. Thoroughly moisten the root ball, then empty the saucer after fifteen minutes. In spring and summer, this means watering about once a week; in winter, every 10 to 15 days, depending on the temperature of the room. Avoid both extremes: a root ball that dries out completely will turn the tips brown, while standing water will rot the roots.
Where to place a Phoenix roebelenii in the house?
Place your Phoenix roebelenii in the brightest room, near a large window or on a veranda. It enjoys a few hours of gentle sunlight, in the morning or late afternoon, but behind a south-facing window in summer, a sheer curtain prevents burning. Keep it away from radiators and doors that open to the cold. Choose a spot out of the way, due to the spines at the base of the fronds.
Why are the leaves of my Phoenix roebelenii turning yellow?
If your Phoenix roebelenii leaves turn yellow, first check which ones are affected. One or two lower fronds turning yellow and then drying out is normal foliage renewal. General yellowing with waterlogged soil indicates overwatering: let it dry out more. Pale and elongated fronds indicate a lack of light. Finally, yellowing between the veins on young fronds may be due to a deficiency: fertilizer in spring corrects the problem.
When and how to repot a Phoenix roebelenii?
Repot your Phoenix roebelenii every 2 to 3 years in spring when roots emerge from the bottom of the pot. Choose a container just slightly wider and well-drained, as this palm likes to be a little snug. Use a high-quality multipurpose potting mix lightened with clay pebbles or pumice. Handle it with thick gloves and do not cut the roots: palms do not tolerate being damaged well. Then water thoroughly.
Can you put a Phoenix roebelenii out on the terrace in summer?
Yes, the Phoenix roebelenii can spend the summer outdoors, from late May to September, on a sheltered patio or balcony. First, gradually acclimate it to partial shade over a few days, as direct sunlight will burn the fronds of a plant coming from indoors. Water it more frequently than you would indoors. Bring it back inside as soon as nighttime temperatures drop below 12°C (54°F): this tropical palm is sensitive to cold and cannot tolerate frost. When you bring it back in, check under the fronds for mealybugs.
The essentials about Phoenix roebelenii - Dwarf date palm
Phoenix roebelenii: characteristics and benefits
The Phoenix roebelenii, also known as the dwarf date palm or pygmy palm, belongs to the Arecaceae family. It grows naturally along riverbanks in southern China, Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and Burma. It is a miniature relative of the date palm, Phoenix dactylifera, and the Canary Island palm, Phoenix canariensis, but on a much smaller scale: in a pot, it rarely exceeds 1.5 to 2 m. Its pinnate fronds, about one metre long, consist of fine, flexible leaflets that arch gracefully. Its growth is slow, making it a long-lasting indoor palm that retains its shape for a long time. However, be careful of the lower leaflets on each frond, which turn into very sharp spines.
Where to place the Phoenix roebelenii? Light and location
The Phoenix roebelenii requires plenty of light. Place it near a bay window, on a veranda, or in a conservatory where it can receive a few hours of gentle sunlight. Away from a window, it becomes leggy and its fronds turn yellow. Avoid placing it directly next to a radiator and keep it away from cold drafts in winter. Also choose a location out of the way to avoid pricking yourself on its spines. The version with a clear trunk is at home next to a sofa; the 27 cm pot version forms a fuller clump. To create a tropical corner, pair it with our other indoor palms.
How to care for the Phoenix roebelenii?
Watering: when the top 2 to 3 centimetres of soil are dry, less frequently in winter.
Light: very bright; gentle morning or evening sun is appreciated.
Temperature: 18 to 27°C; never below 12°C indoors in winter.
Humidity: moderate; mist when the heating is on.
Fertiliser: houseplant fertiliser once a month from April to September.
Why are the tips of my Phoenix roebelenii fronds drying out?
The brown, dry tips on a Phoenix roebelenii are most often caused by dry air from heating or watering too infrequently: increase the humidity and check the root ball more often. It is normal for lower fronds to turn yellow one by one as the plant replaces its old leaves. However, general yellowing with soil that is always damp indicates overwatering. Allow it to dry out more and check that the pot has drainage holes. A lack of light will make the fronds limp and pale.
