Pon - Hydroponic mineral substrate for plants - Hydroponic plant cultivation

Pon is composed of three complementary minerals: zeolite, pumice and volcanic lava.

Zeolite acts like a nutrient sponge: it captures nutrients and gradually releases them to the roots. Pumice ensures rapid drainage while retaining sufficient moisture. Volcanic lava provides structure and stability, creating air pockets essential for root oxygenation.

Together, these components reproduce the ideal conditions of perfectly drained soil, without the drawbacks of organic matter.

Note: Pon is inert and contains no nutrients. Regular application of liquid fertilizer is still essential to nourish your plants.

The transition from soil to pony requires carefully removing the old substrate from the roots.

Start by watering your plant the day before to soften the root ball. Remove it from its pot and gently shake it to remove as much of the potting mix as possible. Then rinse the roots under lukewarm water to eliminate any organic residue that could mold in the soil.

Place the plant in its new pot with the pre-rinsed Pon, making sure to fill the spaces between the roots. Water generously with a diluted nutrient solution.

Don't worry if your plant looks tired in the first few weeks: adaptation is normal and recovery will be vigorous once the new roots have formed.

The majority of houseplants adapt remarkably well to Pon, especially those that are sensitive to excessive humidity.

Hoyas, Pothos, Philodendrons, and Monsteras thrive in this substrate thanks to their aerial roots, which are accustomed to well-drained soils. Plants with fleshy roots, such as Zamioculcas and succulents, particularly appreciate the absence of any risk of rot.

Calatheas and ferns can also live in Pon, but require increased vigilance regarding ambient humidity, as the mineral substrate dries out faster than potting soil.

Avoid pure Pon for bog plants or those requiring a constantly moist and acidic substrate.

A green color indicates the presence of algae, while a white deposit generally signals accumulated limestone or mineral salts.

Algae appear when the substrate remains damp and exposed to light. To limit them, reduce watering and cover the surface with a layer of dry pumice or decorative gravel. Algae are harmless but unsightly.

The white deposit comes from hard water or excess fertilizer. Rinse the Pon thoroughly under clean water to dissolve these build-ups, ideally monthly.

These phenomena do not harm your plants but indicate that periodic rinsing of the substrate will optimize its performance.

Since Pon is inert, combining it with a complete liquid fertilizer becomes essential to nourish your plants.

The Pon and the soil correspond to radically different cultural philosophies.

Enriched potting soil contains organic matter that decomposes gradually, naturally releasing nutrients but also attracting fruit flies and promoting mold growth. It requires regular replacement as its structure deteriorates over time.

Pon, being 100% mineral, never decomposes. It provides a sterile environment, free from parasites and pathogenic fungi. In return, it requires a regular supply of nutrients through fertilized watering.

Choose potting soil for its simple nutrient supply and Pon for its cleanliness and durability. Some enthusiasts use both depending on the specific needs of each plant.
