About

Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado': the snake plant with thin, fan-shaped leaves

Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' is a snake plant hybrid that differs greatly from flat-leaved varieties. It forms a clump of narrow, almost cylindrical pointed leaves arranged in a fan shape, which spread slightly with age. Their dark green colour is marbled with lighter bands. Its bouquet-like appearance makes it a highly graphic plant, perfect for a minimalist style.

  • Foliage: thin, rigid leaves, dark green marbled with light green.
  • Light: bright filtered light; a little gentle sunlight is acceptable.
  • Watering: when the soil is dry all the way to the bottom of the pot.
  • Pets: slightly toxic to cats and dogs (saponins).
  • Placement: desk, shelf, low cabinet, bright windowsill.
  • Packaging, 2 sizes to choose from: 12 cm pot, 40 cm tall, or 19 cm pot, 80 cm tall, without a decorative pot.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know about Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' - Mother-in-law's tongue

Is the Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado toxic to pets?

Yes, the Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado is slightly toxic to cats and dogs. Like all snake plants, it contains saponins which, according to the ASPCA, cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if ingested. Its thin and pointed leaves can attract a playful cat: place it up high, on a shelf, if your pet chews on plants, and consult your veterinarian if they have eaten any.

How tall can a Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado grow?

A Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado generally reaches 60 to 90 cm in height indoors, depending on the light and pot size. Its growth is slow, and it spreads mainly through the offsets that appear at the end of its stolons. We offer it in two sizes: 40 cm in a 12 cm pot, ideal for a desk, and 80 cm in a 19 cm pot, already quite full, to place on the floor or on a low living room cabinet.

How to water a Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado?

A Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado should only be watered when the soil is dry all the way through the pot. In summer, this means watering every 2 to 3 weeks; in winter, once a month or less. Pour the water onto the soil around the base of the plant, let it drain, then empty the saucer. If in doubt, wait another week: it tolerates prolonged dryness much better than overwatering.

Does the Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado need sunlight?

The Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado prefers bright filtered light, without all-day direct sun. A little morning sun suits it, but strong and prolonged sun through a window can discolor or burn its leaves. It tolerates a less lit room for a while, but its variegation fades and its leaves stretch. An east or west window, or a spot set back from a south window, is perfect.

Why does my Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado have dry tips?

Dry, brown tips on a Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado are most often caused by two things: a very prolonged drought or, conversely, roots damaged by overwatering that no longer supply the ends of the leaves. A shock, such as a broken tip during a move, also leaves a dry mark. The tip will not grow back: you can trim it at an angle with clean scissors, without cutting into the green part.

How to propagate offsets from a Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado?

The Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado produces stolons, a type of underground stem, from which offsets grow. In spring, when an offset is about ten centimetres tall and has its own roots, remove the root ball, cut the stolon with a clean knife and repot the young plant in a small pot with well-draining compost. Water lightly and keep it in a bright place: it will establish itself within a few weeks.

What is the difference between Sansevieria Fernwood and Sansevieria cylindrica?

Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado and Sansevieria cylindrica both have narrow, nearly round leaves, but they differ. Cylindrica is a species with thick, perfectly cylindrical leaves, often sold braided. Fernwood is a hybrid with thinner, slightly concave leaves, marbled with light green, arranged in a lighter fan shape. Their care is the same: plenty of filtered light and very little water.

The essentials about Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' - Mother-in-law's tongue

Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado': characteristics and benefits

The Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' is a snake plant hybrid from the Asparagaceae family. The 'Fernwood' cultivar was developed in California from a cross attributed to Sansevieria parva and Sansevieria suffruticosa, two African species; 'Mikado' is a selection with a more uniform habit. Kew botanists now classify these species in the Dracaena genus, but this hybrid remains known everywhere as Sansevieria. It has nothing in common with the flat-leaved Laurentii or Futura Superba: here, the leaves are narrow, almost round and pointed, arranged in a dense fan, dark green marbled with light green. As they age, they arch and twist slightly, giving each plant a unique silhouette.

Where to place the Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado'? Light and location

The Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado' likes bright rooms with bright but filtered light, for example one metre from an east- or west-facing window. The 40 cm size in a 12 cm pot sits on a desk, shelf or bedside table; the 80 cm size in a 19 cm pot is placed on the floor or on a low piece of furniture, creating a vertical bouquet effect. Its slender silhouette pairs beautifully with minimalist, Japanese-inspired or bohemian interiors. It complements the flat-leaved varieties in our Sansevieria collection.

How to care for the Sansevieria 'Fernwood Mikado'?

  • Watering: when the soil is dry all the way to the bottom of the pot, and very little in winter.
  • Light: bright and filtered; avoid full sun all day.
  • Temperature: 18 to 27°C, never below 12°C.
  • Potting mix: very well-draining; use a wide pot with drainage holes for the offsets.
  • Fertiliser: once a month, diluted, from spring to late summer.

Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado spreading out?

Sansevieria Fernwood Mikado leaves that spread out and arch outwards can be perfectly normal: as they age, the fan opens and the leaves twist slightly. If they stretch out, become paler and all lean to one side, the plant lacks light: move it closer to a window. Finally, leaves that droop and become soft at the base indicate overwatering: let the soil dry out completely and check that the pot drains well.
