About
Sansevieria Laurentii, the mother-in-law's tongue with a striking vertical form
The Sansevieria Laurentii, known by nicknames such as mother-in-law's tongue, snake plant, or Saint George's plant, is native to the savannas and arid regions of West and Central Africa, particularly Nigeria, Congo, and Cameroon. Belonging to the Asparagaceae family, this perennial succulent can reach 90 to 120 cm indoors and is distinguished by its long, upright, thick, and leathery leaves, edged with a characteristic luminous golden border that contrasts with the marbled green center.
Its perfectly vertical bayonet-shaped foliage gives each specimen an architectural look that few houseplants can match. Sansevieria Laurentii is renowned for its exceptional ability to filter indoor air, particularly volatile organic compounds, according to studies conducted by NASA as early as 1989. It also stands out for the remarkable particularity of releasing oxygen at night, contrary to the majority of green plants.
Our set of 2 Sansevieria Laurentii in 17 cm pots is available for delivery, ready to create a graphic duo in your home. Order now to add this botanical icon to your collection.

Everything you need to know about Sansevieria Laurentii - Mother-in-law's tongue - Set of 2 Plants - 17cm Pot - Height 60-70cm
What light exposure is best for my Sansevieria Laurentii?
The Sansevieria Laurentii adapts to a wide range of lighting conditions, from bright indirect light to moderately dim interiors.
In its natural habitat, this African savanna plant grows under intense sun but in the partial shade of bushes and rocks. Indoors, it does best near an east- or west-facing window, without ever receiving direct afternoon sun in summer, which can scorch its leaves.
In winter, move it closer to the strongest available light source. In summer, moving it slightly back from the window is enough to prevent any heat stress. The golden edging of the Laurentii variety is preserved all the better the light is good.
Important tip 🌿A Sansevieria placed in a very dark room will considerably slow its growth and may lose the intensity of its golden leaf markings. For low-light rooms, our 2-bulb full-spectrum grow light faithfully mimics natural light, without harmful UV rays.
Is Sansevieria Laurentii toxic to pets and children?
Sansevieria Laurentii is considered toxic to cats, dogs, and young children if ingested.
It contains natural steroidal saponins present throughout its leaf tissues. These chemical compounds cause irritation of the digestive mucous membranes when ingested.
In pets, the most common symptoms of ingestion include nausea, vomiting, excessive salivation, and sometimes mild diarrhea. These effects are generally not serious but warrant a prompt veterinary consultation.
What precautions should you take on a daily basis?
Place your Sansevieria Laurentii out of reach of pets and young children, ideally on a high piece of furniture or shelf. Its vertical shape allows it to fit easily into elevated areas.
With a carefully chosen location, you can enjoy a completely safe coexistence between this plant and your loved ones every day.
Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria Laurentii turning yellow?
Sansevieria Laurentii leaves most often turn yellow due to overwatering, a lack of light, or a nutrient deficiency.
If the leaves turn yellow and become soft, the problem is generally caused by too much water, which leads to the beginning of root rot.
If the leaves gradually turn yellow while remaining firm and dry, the plant is often lacking light or fertilizer.
If the yellowing is accompanied by small light spots, a dull appearance, or fine webs, it may be a spider mite infestation, which is common indoors, especially in dry conditions.
Sansevieria Laurentii stores water in its thick, fleshy leaves: soft, translucent yellowing at the base of the leaves is almost always a sign that the growing medium has been too wet for too long.
Important tip 🌿One or two old leaves turning yellow from time to time is completely normal. However, you should be concerned if several leaves turn yellow quickly or if the problem spreads to the young leaves.
When and how should I repot my Sansevieria Laurentii?
The Sansevieria Laurentii is ideally repotted in spring, between March and May, when growth actively resumes.
Repotting is necessary when:
roots grow out through the drainage holes,
growth slows down,
or the potting mix compacts too quickly after watering.
As a general rule, repotting every 2 years is sufficient for an adult plant.
The Sansevieria Laurentii develops thick creeping rhizomes that eventually crack soft plastic pots if the plant is too cramped: carefully check the sides of the pot as spring approaches.
Choose a pot 2 to 3 cm wider than the old one, and make sure it has drainage holes. Our clear pots with holes for observing the roots after repotting are ideal: their transparency makes it easy to monitor root recovery without disturbing the plant.
Carefully remove the plant from its pot, tapping the pot if necessary.
Gently loosen the roots if they are very compacted, without breaking them.
Place a layer of potting mix, position the plant upright, and fill in around it without burying the crown.
Important tip 🌿After repotting, water to help settle the potting mix. Repotting every two years is sufficient.
When and how should I fertilize my Sansevieria Laurentii?
Sansevieria Laurentii should be fertilized every 2 to 3 weeks from March to October with a liquid fertilizer diluted in the watering water.
From November to February, reduce fertilization significantly or stop it altogether. This is the plant's dormant period.
Properly dosed fertilization promotes:
denser, more vibrant foliage,
steady growth,
and greater plant resilience.
Sansevieria Laurentii does not naturally require many nutrients: half the usual recommended dose is perfectly sufficient and helps prevent the risk of root burn.
Important tip 🌿Never fertilize dry soil, as this could burn the roots. Water first, then apply the fertilizer 2 to 3 days later.
How to properly water my Sansevieria Laurentii?
Water the Sansevieria Laurentii when the soil has dried out thoroughly, which is approximately every 10 to 14 days in summer and every 20 to 30 days in winter. Use room-temperature water.
How to know when to water?
The finger test remains the most reliable method: push your index finger 2 to 3 cm into the soil. If the soil is dry, it is time to water.
The Sansevieria Laurentii stores water in its thick succulent leaves, allowing it to go several weeks without water without any visible damage: it is one of the few houseplants that truly forgives a missed watering.
Important tip: If in doubt, wait rather than watering. Plants tolerate a lack of water better than an excess, which causes root rot.
How do I propagate my Sansevieria Laurentii?
Sansevieria Laurentii is propagated by rhizome division or leaf cuttings, ideally in spring between April and June.
Propagation by rhizome division (the most reliable method)At the time of repotting, separate the young offshoots (pups) growing at the base of the mother plant by cutting the rhizome using our stainless steel straight-tip secateurs for a clean and neat cut. Let the cut heal in the air for a few hours before replanting.
Identify an offshoot at least 5 to 8 cm tall with its own roots, and neatly cut the connecting rhizome.
Place in a bright and warm location, between 20 and 25°C, away from direct sunlight.
Note: Sansevieria Laurentii leaf cuttings do not retain the characteristic golden border of the variety. To obtain plants true to the mother plant, exclusively use rhizome division. Use our universal substrate enriched with biostimulants for transplanting.
Important tip 🌿Rooting an offshoot takes 3 to 6 weeks depending on conditions. The first signs of success are the appearance of a new leaf in the center of the offshoot. Avoid watering heavily during this phase.
The essentials about Sansevieria Laurentii - Mother-in-law's tongue - Set of 2 Plants - 17cm Pot - Height 60-70cm
Sansevieria Laurentii: identity and origin
The Sansevieria Laurentii, also known as Dracaena trifasciata 'Laurentii', is a perennial succulent in the Asparagaceae family, native to the arid regions and savannas of West and Central Africa. Recognizable by its long, upright blade-shaped leaves, marbled with green and edged with a persistent golden border, it can grow over 90 cm tall indoors. Its ability to filter volatile organic compounds has been documented in NASA studies since 1989.
Sansevieria care: light, watering and potting mix
Sansevieria tolerates bright indirect light as well as moderately dim rooms, although good light preserves the intensity of the golden border. Watering should be very infrequent: wait until the potting mix is completely dry all the way through before watering again. Our universal potting mix enriched with essential nutrients ensures optimal drainage and prevents the standing moisture that is harmful to its roots.
Where to place your Sansevieria for always striking foliage?
Ideal light: east or west window, bright indirect light.
Shade tolerance: tolerates less bright corners without damage.
Temperature: between 15 and 30°C, away from cold drafts.
Frequently asked questions: why is the golden border of my Sansevieria Laurentii fading?
The characteristic golden border of the Sansevieria Laurentii fades when the plant lacks light for an extended period. This phenomenon, linked to reduced photosynthesis in the marginal areas of the leaves, is reversible if you move the plant closer to a natural or artificial light source. Before moving it, wait 2 to 3 weeks for it to acclimate after delivery. If the trend continues, our full-spectrum grow light quickly restores the vibrancy of the leaf markings. However, avoid direct summer sun, which scorches the leaves.
