About
Sansevieria 'Moonshine': the mother-in-law's tongue with silvery foliage
Sansevieria 'Moonshine' is a horticultural variety of mother-in-law's tongue, selectively bred in cultivation and instantly recognizable. Its broad, vase-shaped leaves are an almost frosted silvery green, highlighted by a fine dark green border. Young leaves emerge very pale, then take on a slightly striped olive green tone as they age. A bright and soft touch, very different from classic green and yellow sansevières.
Foliage: broad silvery green leaves, fine dark green border.
Light: bright indirect light to maintain its silvery sheen.
Watering: when the soil is dry throughout its depth, very little in winter.
Pets: slightly toxic to cats and dogs (saponins).
Location: bright living room, bedroom, office, near a window.
Packaging: 1 plant in a 17 cm pot, 60 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.
Light foliage with a moonlit sheen, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Sansevieria 'Moonshine' - Mother-in-law's tongue - 17cm pot - Height 60cm
Is the Sansevieria Moonshine toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, the Sansevieria Moonshine is slightly toxic to cats and dogs. Like all snake plants, it contains saponins which, according to the ASPCA, cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea if the animal eats it. Severe cases are rare, as its firm and bitter leaves are not very appealing. However, place it out of reach of animals that chew on plants and call your veterinarian in case of ingestion.
How big can a Sansevieria Moonshine grow?
A Sansevieria Moonshine generally reaches 60 to 80 cm tall indoors. Its leaves measure 40 to 60 cm long by 7 to 10 cm wide, making it one of the mother-in-law's tongues with the widest leaves. Its growth is slow: a few new leaves per year, more in a bright room. The delivered plant already measures 60 cm in a 17 cm pot, and then fills out mainly through new offsets.
How do I water a Sansevieria Moonshine?
A Sansevieria Moonshine should only be watered when the soil is dry throughout the pot, which means every 2 to 3 weeks in summer and once a month in winter. Pour the water onto the soil, never into the center of the rosette: its wide leaves form a funnel where water stagnates and rots the young shoots. Let it drain well and empty the saucer or cachepot after each watering.
Can the Sansevieria Moonshine tolerate low light?
Yes, the Sansevieria Moonshine tolerates low light, but it loses some of its charm in those conditions. In a dark room, its leaves darken and take on an olive-green hue, and its growth almost stops. To maintain its silvery appearance, we recommend bright indirect light near an east- or west-facing window. Soft morning sun is suitable for it, while full afternoon sun through glass can burn its leaves.
Why does my Sansevieria Moonshine have brown spots?
Brown spots on a Sansevieria Moonshine often have three causes. Dry, beige patches indicate sunburn from too much sunlight through a window. Soft, dark brown marks at the base reveal overwatering or water trapped in the center of the rosette. Dry marks on a broken or rubbed leaf are simply wounds, which do not fade but do not spread. Its light-colored leaves show these imperfections more than green varieties.
How to propagate a Sansevieria Moonshine?
The best way to propagate a Sansevieria Moonshine is by division in spring. Remove the plant from its pot, locate a pup that has its own leaves and roots, detach it with a clean knife, and repot it in well-draining soil. Leaf cuttings also work, using 10 cm sections that are dried for a few days and then planted in sand, but the process is slow and the new plant may not retain exactly the same color.
What is the difference between Sansevieria Moonshine and Sansevieria Laurentii?
Sansevieria Moonshine and Laurentii are two varieties of the same species, but they look quite different. Moonshine has broad, almost uniform silvery-green leaves with a thin dark green border. Laurentii has narrower dark green leaves, striped with lighter bands and edged in bright yellow. Moonshine adds a soft, luminous touch, while Laurentii provides a bolder graphic contrast. They require identical care.
The essentials about Sansevieria 'Moonshine' - Mother-in-law's tongue - 17cm pot - Height 60cm
Sansevieria 'Moonshine': characteristics and benefits
The Sansevieria 'Moonshine' is a snake plant cultivar bred in nurseries, derived from the African species Sansevieria trifasciata (family Asparagaceae). Kew botanists now classify it under the genus Dracaena (Dracaena trifasciata), but it remains known everywhere as a Sansevieria. What makes it unique is its colour: broad, tongue-shaped leaves of an almost white silvery green when young, edged with a fine dark green border. While the Laurentii has a yellow border and the Futura Superba is short and stocky, the 'Moonshine' is soft and luminous, with its leaves arranged in a vase shape.
Where to place the Sansevieria 'Moonshine'? Light and location
The Sansevieria 'Moonshine' is ideally suited to a bright room, one or two metres from a window, away from harsh direct sunlight. The more light it receives, the lighter and more silvery its foliage remains; it will cope in a dark corner, but its leaves will turn olive green. Its pale colour stands out beautifully against a dark wall or next to plants with deep green foliage. On the floor in a bedroom or on a low table in the living room, it adds a luminous touch. Pair it with other varieties from our Sansevieria collection.
How to care for the Sansevieria 'Moonshine'?
Watering: when the soil is dry throughout, once a month in winter.
Light: bright and indirect to maintain its silvery sheen.
Temperature: 18 to 27°C, never below 12°C.
Potting mix: well-draining compost with added sand, in a heavy, perforated pot.
Care: dust the leaves, use diluted fertiliser once a month in summer.
Why is my Sansevieria Moonshine losing its silvery colour?
A Sansevieria Moonshine that darkens and turns olive green almost always lacks light. Its leaves produce more green pigment to compensate for a room that is too dark: move it closer to a bright window and new leaves will emerge very light again. It is also worth noting that older leaves naturally darken with age; this is normal. Finally, a layer of dust dulls their sheen: a simple wipe with a damp cloth will restore their lustre.
