About
Sansevieria zeylanica: the all-green mother-in-law's tongue, without a yellow border
Sansevieria zeylanica is the Ceylon mother-in-law's tongue, native to Sri Lanka and southern India. It grows long, thin, rigid, dark green leaves, striped with zigzagging grey-green bands, without the yellow border of the Laurentii. Each clump bears many tightly packed leaves, giving it a slender and highly graphic silhouette. An indestructible plant that tolerates missed waterings and low-light rooms.
Foliage: dark green sword-shaped leaves, striped with wavy light bands.
Light: bright indirect light is ideal, tolerates partial shade.
Watering: when the soil is dry throughout its depth, very little in winter.
Pets: slightly toxic to cats and dogs (saponins).
Location: living room, entrance hall, bedroom, office, away from radiators.
Packaging, 2 sizes to choose from: 17 cm pot, 60 cm tall, or 27 cm pot, 100 to 120 cm tall, without a decorative pot.
A simple vertical plant that requires almost no maintenance, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Sansevieria zeylanica - Mother-in-law's tongue
Is Sansevieria zeylanica toxic to cats and dogs?
Yes, Sansevieria zeylanica is slightly toxic to cats and dogs. Like other snake plants, it contains saponins: the ASPCA states that if ingested, they cause nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Serious poisonings are rare, as its tough, bitter leaves quickly discourage pets. Keep it out of reach of a chewing cat or puppy, and contact your veterinarian if your pet has eaten any.
How tall can a Sansevieria zeylanica grow?
Indoors, a Sansevieria zeylanica generally reaches 1 m to 1.20 m over the years, filling out mainly in width thanks to the offsets that grow from its rhizome. Its growth is slow: a few new leaves per year, more numerous in a bright room. We offer it in two sizes: 60 cm in a 17 cm pot, and 100 to 120 cm in a 27 cm pot for those who want an immediate effect in a living room.
How often should I water a Sansevieria zeylanica?
A Sansevieria zeylanica should only be watered when the soil is dry throughout the pot. In practice, this means watering every 2 to 3 weeks in spring and summer, and once a month, or even less, in winter. Water the soil rather than the center of the leaves, let the water drain, then empty the saucer. Its thick leaves store water: it is better to forget to water it than to overwater it.
Can a Sansevieria zeylanica live in a dark room?
Yes, the Sansevieria zeylanica tolerates a low-light room, such as an entrance hall, a hallway, or an office lit by a north-facing window. It survives very well there but grows slowly, and its light bands become less contrasting. In this case, water even less frequently, as the soil dries slowly. To see it thrive, occasionally give it a brighter spot, away from harsh afternoon sun.
Why are the leaves on my Sansevieria zeylanica falling off?
A Sansevieria zeylanica with leaves that are flopping over or falling down most often suffers from overwatering: the base of the leaves rots and can no longer support them. Check if it is soft or brown, cut off the damaged parts and let the root ball dry out. A prolonged lack of light can also cause leaves that have become too long and thin to droop. A pot that is too large, which retains moisture, worsens the problem.
How to propagate Sansevieria zeylanica?
Sansevieria zeylanica is easiest to propagate by division in spring: remove the plant, use a knife to separate a pup with a few leaves and roots, then repot it in well-draining soil. You can also take a cutting from a 10 cm leaf section, leave it to dry for two or three days, then plant it in damp sand in a warm place. This method is slower, with several months passing before the first shoots appear.
What is the difference between Sansevieria zeylanica and Sansevieria Laurentii?
Sansevieria zeylanica differs from Laurentii by the absence of a yellow border: its leaves are entirely dark green, striped with grey-green bands. Laurentii, a cultivar of Sansevieria trifasciata, has wider leaves edged with a bright yellow margin. Zeylanica also forms fuller clumps, with thinner leaves. Their care is the same: very tolerant, very little water.
The essentials about Sansevieria zeylanica - Mother-in-law's tongue
Sansevieria zeylanica: characteristics and benefits
The Sansevieria zeylanica belongs to the Asparagaceae family. It grows wild in the dry areas of Sri Lanka and southern India, hence its name Ceylon mother-in-law's tongue. Kew botanists now classify it under the genus Dracaena (Dracaena zeylanica), but it remains known everywhere as Sansevieria. Its rigid, narrow leaves, slightly grooved in the center, are dark green with wavy grey-green bands. Unlike the Sansevieria Laurentii, it has no yellow border, and it is much more slender than the Futura Superba, which is short and wide. Each clump consists of many tightly packed leaves, creating a very dense and graphic effect.
Where to place the Sansevieria zeylanica? Light and location
The Sansevieria zeylanica adapts to almost any room. Its ideal spot is bright but indirect light, near an east or west-facing window, or slightly back from a bay window. It also tolerates a moderately lit entrance or hallway, where many plants struggle. The large 100 to 120 cm size dresses up a living room corner or frames a sofa; the 60 cm size finds its place on a low cabinet or on the floor in a bedroom. It beautifully complements the other varieties in our Sansevieria collection.
How to care for the Sansevieria zeylanica?
Watering: when the soil is dry throughout, once a month in winter.
Light: bright and indirect, partial shade tolerated.
Temperature: 18 to 27 °C, never below 12 °C.
Substrate: well-draining potting mix lightened with sand, pot with drainage holes.
Fertilizer: once a month, diluted, from spring to late summer.
Why are the leaves of my Sansevieria zeylanica becoming soft?
Soft leaves that bend or turn yellow at the base almost always indicate overwatering: the roots and rhizome rot in soil that has remained damp, especially in winter or in a decorative pot that retains water. Remove the root ball, cut away the brown and soft parts, let it dry for a few days, and replant in dry, well-draining substrate. Conversely, wrinkled and thin leaves that fold lengthwise indicate prolonged thirst: a good watering will plump them up in a few days.
