About
Sarracenia × farnhamii: the large sarracenia with a white throat veined with red
Sarracenia × farnhamii is a natural hybrid born in the coastal bogs of the Gulf of Mexico, where Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia rubra grow together. From the former, it takes its large upright pitchers with a white top; from the latter, its fine red veins and wavy hood. Insects, attracted by the nectar in the throat, slip to the bottom of the tube where they are digested.
Pitchers: tall and slender, green base, light throat mottled with white, veined with red, which darkens in autumn.
Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours a day, ideally outdoors.
Watering: rainwater or demineralized water, 1 to 3 cm in the saucer from spring to autumn.
Animals: no known toxicity for cats and dogs.
Hardiness: winter dormancy between 0 and 10 °C; in a 12 cm pot, protected from frost.
Packaging, 2 choices: 1 plant; or a set of 2 plants, each in a 12 cm pot, height 40 cm, without a cachepot.
A large spectacular carnivore, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Sarracenia × farnhamii - Sarracenia, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 40 cm
How large does an adult Sarracenia × farnhamii grow?
An adult Sarracenia × farnhamii forms upright pitchers 30 to 45 cm tall in summer, sometimes even taller in a well-established clump in full sun. It is one of the large sarracenias, much taller than the compact forms derived from S. purpurea. The plants supplied already measure around 40 cm in a 12 cm pot. The clump widens each year by its rhizome and can be divided every 2 to 3 years.
What is the difference between Sarracenia × farnhamii and Sarracenia leucophylla?
Sarracenia × farnhamii is a hybrid of Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia rubra. The pure leucophylla has an almost entirely white throat, like parchment veined with red. In farnhamii, the white is more subtle, appearing in patches, and the red veins of S. rubra dominate, with a narrower tube. Both love full sun, rainwater, and a cool winter rest: they are grown exactly the same way, in pots or planters.
Why are the pitchers of Sarracenia × farnhamii not red?
The pitchers of Sarracenia × farnhamii remain green when light is lacking. Their red veins and white throats only become pronounced in full sun, for at least 6 hours a day. The young spring pitchers are also lighter than those of late summer and autumn, which turn deep red with cool nights. Place it outside, facing due south, and the new pitchers will take on their colors by the end of summer.
How to overwinter a potted Sarracenia × farnhamii?
Sarracenia × farnhamii needs a winter rest from November to February, between 0 and 10 °C. Leave it outside against a sheltered wall, with just moist substrate and an empty saucer. In a 12 cm pot, the roots freeze quickly: in extreme cold, bring it inside for a few days in a bright garage or an unheated conservatory. Do not keep it warm inside the house, otherwise it will exhaust itself and not recover well in spring.
Can the set of 2 Sarracenia × farnhamii be planted in the same planter?
Yes, the two Sarracenia × farnhamii in the lot grow very well together in a planter at least 30 cm long, made of plastic, without fertilizer. Fill it with a mixture of blonde peat moss and perlite or non-calcareous sand, space the two clumps about twenty centimeters apart, and keep a few centimeters of rainwater at the bottom in summer. A larger volume of substrate also protects the roots better from frost.
Should the flower of the Sarracenia × farnhamii be cut off?
It is not necessary to cut the flower stalk of the Sarracenia × farnhamii. It appears in spring on mature plants, dark red, at the end of a long stalk, before the new pitchers. It is decorative but uses energy: if your plant is young or not very vigorous, cut the stalk at the base as soon as it opens to encourage larger pitchers. A well-established mature clump can flower without harm.
Is Sarracenia × farnhamii toxic to cats and dogs?
Sarracenia × farnhamii has no known toxicity to cats and dogs. The ASPCA does not list it, but classifies Darlingtonia, a carnivorous plant from the same family, as non-toxic, and horticultural references report no toxic effects. Its digestive fluid is harmless to animals. Still, place it out of reach, as its large pitchers break easily and the potting mix can spill.
The essentials about Sarracenia × farnhamii - Sarracenia, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 40 cm
Sarracenia × farnhamii: characteristics and benefits
The Sarracenia × farnhamii is a natural hybrid accepted by the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, resulting from a cross between Sarracenia leucophylla and Sarracenia rubra. It is found in the wild in the wet savannas of Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Mississippi, where the two parent species grow together. It forms a clump of upright, slender pitchers, 30 to 45 cm tall at maturity, green at the base, with a pale, white-mottled throat marked by broad red veins. The hood is wide and wavy, while the lip is thick and dark red. As the nights cool in autumn, the whole plant turns deep red. Its dark red flowers appear in spring on mature plants, before the new pitchers.
Where to plant Sarracenia × farnhamii? Light and hardiness
This sarracenia is grown outdoors in full sun, in a pot placed on a saucer filled with rainwater, on a balcony, patio or by the edge of a pond. Its large size makes it a striking feature among our balcony and patio plants. It is not suitable for a dark room or a living room heated year-round. In winter, it goes dormant: in a small pot, protect it from severe, prolonged frosts, as a 12 cm pot can freeze quickly to the core.
How to care for Sarracenia × farnhamii?
Soil: blonde peat and perlite or non-calcareous sand; never use potting soil or fertiliser.
Planting: in a plastic pot or planter, in spring, before growth resumes.
Watering: rainwater or demineralised water; keep the saucer filled from spring to autumn.
Pruning: cut off dry pitchers at the base in late winter.
Fertilisation: none; it catches its own insects.
Why do my Sarracenia × farnhamii pitchers remain green?
Pitchers that are uniformly green, without any white or red, almost always indicate a lack of direct sunlight. The red pigments and white spots of the Sarracenia × farnhamii only develop with several hours of sun per day. Move it to a south-facing position, preferably outdoors, and the next pitchers will take on colour. Young spring pitchers are also paler than those in late summer: be patient, this is normal. Our sarracenia growing guide also explains how to overwinter it.
