Everything you need to know about Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' - Hybrid Sarracenia, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 30 cm
Who created Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' and where does its name come from?
Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' was obtained in England by Alan Hindle, who created the cross in 1985 and gave it the first name of his wife, Judith. It is a complex hybrid: a cross between Sarracenia purpurea and Sarracenia flava was then crossed with Sarracenia leucophylla. This ancestry explains its slender, numerous, and highly colorful pitchers, which are highly sought after by collectors today.
How large does Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' grow?
Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' is a medium-sized pitcher plant: its pitchers generally measure 20 to 35 cm and can approach 40 cm on a mature plant in full sun. It remains shorter than the large S. flava or S. leucophylla, but taller than compact forms. The supplied plants measure about 30 cm in a 12 cm pot and grow fuller each year thanks to their rhizome, which produces new pitchers.
Why do the pitchers of the Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' change color?
The pitchers of Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' emerge green with yellow tints, then turn dark pink and burgundy as they mature. This change depends on the sun: the more direct light they receive, the more intense the red becomes, especially in late summer. The lid becomes marbled with white and purple veins. A plant grown in the shade retains dull green pitchers, even late in the season.
Is Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' frost-hardy?
Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' can withstand winter cold and even needs it for dormancy, but not hard frosts. The Royal Horticultural Society classifies it as H3, meaning it is only hardy in mild regions. In a 12 cm pot, the roots freeze quickly: from November to February, keep it between 0 and 10°C, in a cold greenhouse, a bright garage, or an unheated conservatory, with just moist substrate.
How to water the Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' in summer?
In summer, the Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' is watered via the saucer: keep 1 to 3 cm of rainwater or demineralized water under the pot at all times. It drinks a lot in intense heat, especially in the sun, so check the level every day during heatwaves. Never use tap water or mineral water: their salts accumulate in the peat and burn the roots in a few weeks. In winter, empty the saucer.
Can a Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' be divided?
Yes, an established Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' divides every 3 to 4 years in late winter, just before new growth begins. Remove it from its pot, expose the rhizome, and cut it with a clean blade into sections, each containing roots and at least one bud. Repot each section in a mixture of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite without fertilizer, then water with rainwater. The divisions will produce mature pitchers in one to two seasons.
Is Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' toxic to cats and dogs?
Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' is not known to be toxic to cats or dogs. It is not on the ASPCA list, which, however, classifies Darlingtonia—a carnivorous plant from the same Sarracenaceae family—as non-toxic. Its digestive fluid poses no danger to animals. Still, keep it out of reach: its slender pitchers bend easily, and the potting mix can be knocked over with a single paw swipe.
The essentials about Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' - Hybrid Sarracenia, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 30 cm
Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle': characteristics and benefits
The Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' is a complex hybrid created in 1985 by the Englishman Alan Hindle. Its parents include Sarracenia flava, Sarracenia purpurea and Sarracenia leucophylla, three species from the bogs of the southeastern United States. It forms a clump of slender, upright pitchers, more numerous than in many other sarracenias, measuring 20 to 40 cm high depending on age and sunlight. Its greatest asset is its colour change: the young pitchers are green with yellow tints, then turn dark pink and burgundy, with a wavy hood marbled in white and veined in purple. In spring, mature plants bear solitary, drooping red flowers on long stems.
Where to plant the Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle'? Exposure and hardiness
This sarracenia is grown outdoors, in full sun, in a pot placed on a saucer filled with rainwater. A south-facing balcony or an open terrace is perfect for it; it thus joins our full-sun plants. Indoors, only a south-facing windowsill is suitable, and only during the warmer months. In winter, it rests in a cool place: the RHS considers it hardy only in mild regions, so protect it from hard, prolonged frosts when kept in a pot.
How to care for the Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle'?
Soil: blonde peat and perlite or non-calcareous sand, without fertiliser.
Planting: in a plastic pot, repotting every 2 to 3 years at the end of winter.
Watering: rainwater or demineralised water, with the saucer filled during the growing season.
Pruning: cut dry pitchers and faded flower stems at the base.
Fertilisation: none, as it feeds on captured insects.
Why are my Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle' pitchers green?
This is normal in spring: in the Sarracenia 'Judith Hindle', the young pitchers are green and only take on their dark pink and burgundy tints as they mature, under direct sunlight. If the pitchers remain green in midsummer, the plant lacks light: place it outdoors in a south-facing position. Hard water or fertiliser also weaken it and dull its colours. Our guide to growing sarracenias outdoors explains how to prepare it for winter.
