  • Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours per day.
  • Watering: rainwater or demineralized water, pot placed in a saucer of water in summer.
  • Animals: no known toxicity for cats and dogs.

Help and solutions:

Everything you need to know about Sarracenia 'Maroon' - Maroon pitcher plant, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 23 cm

How large does Sarracenia 'Maroon' grow?

Sarracenia 'Maroon' is a small sarracenia: its pitchers measure about 15 to 25 cm at maturity, according to specialist nurseries. It remains much shorter than large sarracenias such as S. leucophylla or S. flava, which often exceed 50 cm. Supplied at about 23 cm in a 12 cm pot, it mainly spreads out into a clump over the years, without gaining much height. It is a good choice for a small balcony.

Why is my Sarracenia 'Maroon' not dark red?

A Sarracenia 'Maroon' remains green with red veins unless it receives enough direct sunlight. Its burgundy color develops with at least 6 hours of sun per day, and intensifies in late summer when the nights cool down. The young spring pitchers are always much lighter. Place it outside in a south-facing spot: the new pitchers will be noticeably darker. Also avoid tap water, which weakens the plant.

What is the difference between Sarracenia 'Maroon' and Sarracenia purpurea?

Sarracenia 'Maroon' is presented as a hybrid of Sarracenia purpurea and Sarracenia rubra. The purpurea forms a low rosette of open, belly-shaped pitchers that fill with rainwater. 'Maroon' produces narrower, taller pitchers, with a wavy hood above the opening and a more uniform burgundy colour. Their growing requirements are identical: full sun, rainwater and a cool winter.

Can Sarracenia 'Maroon' be grown on a windowsill?

Yes, Sarracenia 'Maroon' is one of the best-suited pitcher plants for a windowsill thanks to its small size, provided it faces due south and receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight. Keep its pot in a saucer filled with rainwater. In winter, it should not remain in a heated room: move it outside to a sheltered spot or into a cool, bright room, between 0 and 10°C, for its dormancy.

Can Sarracenia 'Maroon' stay outside in winter?

Sarracenia 'Maroon' can easily overwinter outdoors if protected from hard frosts. It needs this cool rest, between 0 and 10°C, from November to February. In a 12 cm pot, its roots freeze quickly: place it against a sheltered wall and bring it into a bright garage for a few days during extreme cold. Planted in a large planter, it can withstand much lower temperatures.

When to repot the Sarracenia 'Maroon'?

Sarracenia 'Maroon' should be repotted every 2 to 3 years at the end of winter, in February or March, just before new shoots emerge from the rhizome. Choose a slightly larger plastic pot and a mix of long-fiber sphagnum moss and perlite or non-calcareous sand, without fertilizer. If the clump is dense, take this opportunity to divide it into pieces with roots and buds, then water with rainwater.

Is Sarracenia 'Maroon' toxic to cats and dogs?

Sarracenia 'Maroon' is not known to be toxic to cats and dogs. The genus is not listed by the ASPCA, which does, however, classify Darlingtonia, a carnivorous plant from the same family, as non-toxic. Its digestive fluid is harmless to pets. Still, keep it out of reach of playful cats: its small pitchers bend easily, and the potting mix spills at the slightest paw swipe.

The essentials about Sarracenia 'Maroon' - Maroon pitcher plant, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 23 cm

Sarracenia 'Maroon': characteristics and benefits

The Sarracenia 'Maroon' is a small sarracenia, prized for the maroon color of its pitchers. Specialist nurseries describe it as a cross between Sarracenia purpurea and Sarracenia rubra, the hybrid known to botanists as Sarracenia × chelsonii. It inherits its compact growth and squat pitchers from S. purpurea, and its red veins and wavy hood from S. rubra. At maturity, its pitchers measure about 15 to 25 cm, making it one of the most compact of the genus. When young, the pitchers are green with red veins, then darken to a nearly solid maroon in full sun. In early spring, the adult plants bear dark red flowers.

Where to plant the Sarracenia 'Maroon'? Exposure and hardiness

Place it outdoors, in full sun, on a south-facing balcony, patio, or garden table, in its pot sitting in a saucer of rainwater. Its small size makes it suitable for cultivation in limited spaces, alongside our other balcony and patio plants. A south-facing windowsill is suitable during the growing season, but not a heated room in winter. During dormancy, protect its small pot from hard frosts: a French nursery indicates that in a large planter or bog, it can withstand around -15°C, but not in a 12 cm pot.

How to care for the Sarracenia 'Maroon'?

  • Soil: blonde peat and perlite or non-calcareous sand, with no fertilizer.
  • Planting: in a pot or plastic container in spring.
  • Watering: rainwater or demineralized water, 1 to 2 cm in the saucer in summer.
  • Pruning: cut brown pitchers flush with the plant in late winter.
  • Fertilizing: none, as it captures its own prey.

What is the difference between the Sarracenia 'Maroon' and the Sarracenia purpurea?

The Sarracenia purpurea spreads a rosette of squat, wide-open pitchers along the ground, which collect rainwater. The Sarracenia 'Maroon', enhanced by S. rubra, produces taller, narrower pitchers topped with a hood that protects the opening, and has a more uniform maroon color. Both are grown in the same way: full sun, rainwater, and cool dormancy. Our sarracenia growing guide details winter care.
