About
Sarracenia psittacina: the parrot pitcher plant with horizontal pitchers
Sarracenia psittacina, or the parrot pitcher plant, is the most striking of the genus. Instead of growing upright trumpets, it lays its pitchers flat on the ground, in a rosette, like the spokes of a wheel. Each pitcher ends in a bulbous head, mottled with white windows, which resembles a parrot's beak. The entrance, a small opening beneath this beak, leads to a tube lined with hairs pointing towards the bottom: the prey enters, but never comes out. A wild species from the marshes of the Gulf of Mexico, small and very distinctive.
Foliage: green pitchers marbled with red and white, laid out in a rosette.
Exposure: full sun, at least 6 hours a day.
Watering: rainwater or demineralized water, generous water level in the saucer.
Pets: no known toxicity for cats and dogs.
Hardiness: more sensitive to cold than other sarracenias, to be sheltered as soon as hard frosts occur.
Packaging: 1 plant in a 12 cm pot, 13 cm tall upon delivery, without a decorative pot.
A miniature and unique carnivore, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Sarracenia psittacina - Parrot's beak, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 13 cm
Is Sarracenia psittacina dangerous to cats?
Sarracenia psittacina is not known to be toxic to cats or dogs. Its pitchers only trap small crawling insects and are no match for a pet. The ASPCA, which does not have a listing for sarracenias, classifies Darlingtonia, a relative in the same family, as non-toxic. However, its rosette, which sits flush with the pot, is fragile: a cat lying on it or scratching the peat can damage it.
Why does Sarracenia psittacina have horizontal pitchers?
Sarracenia psittacina lays its pitchers on the ground because it mainly hunts crawling prey: ants, small beetles, and woodlice. The wing running along each pitcher serves as a path to the entrance. In its natural habitat, which often consists of flooded marshes, this position also allows it to trap tadpoles and aquatic insects underwater. Horizontal pitchers are therefore normal: they are not caused by a lack of light or water.
How large does an adult Sarracenia psittacina grow?
Sarracenia psittacina remains the shortest of our sarracenias: its rosette rises only 10 to 15 cm. Its horizontally oriented pitchers generally measure 12 to 20 cm long, so the plant spreads to a diameter of 20 to 30 cm. In spring, the flower stalk of an adult plant slightly exceeds its height. The plant is delivered measuring 13 cm in a 12 cm pot and grows larger each summer.
Can Sarracenia psittacina tolerate frost in winter?
Sarracenia psittacina does not tolerate severe cold well: the RHS rates it hardy only in mild climates, down to around -5°C. However, it needs a cool winter, between 0 and 10°C, to rest. In a mild region, leave it outside against a sheltered wall. Elsewhere, bring it indoors from December to February in a bright garage, a cool conservatory, or a frost-free greenhouse. A heated room would exhaust it.
Can Sarracenia psittacina be left with its roots sitting in water?
Yes, Sarracenia psittacina prefers more water than other pitcher plants, as it grows in savannas that are flooded part of the year. From spring to autumn, keep 2 to 3 cm of rainwater in the saucer, or even a little more during hot weather. Permanent full immersion is not necessary. In winter, return to a just-moist substrate to prevent rhizome rot.
What is the difference between Sarracenia psittacina and Darlingtonia?
Sarracenia psittacina and Darlingtonia californica both have a domed hood with translucent windows, but they differ greatly. Psittacina lays its pitchers on the ground and lives in the warm swamps of the southeastern United States. Darlingtonia, or cobra plant, erects tall pitchers adorned with a forked tongue and comes from the mountains of Oregon and California, where its roots bathe in cool water. Psittacina is much easier to grow.
When to repot the Sarracenia psittacina?
Sarracenia psittacina should be repotted every 2 to 3 years, in February or March, before the new pitchers emerge. Choose a plastic pot that is wider than it is deep, as the rosette spreads, and a mix of blonde peat and non-calcareous sand or perlite, without fertilizer. A dense clump divides at this time into offsets, each bearing roots. Water with rainwater and replace the saucer.
The essentials about Sarracenia psittacina - Parrot's beak, carnivorous plant - 12 cm pot - Height 13 cm
Sarracenia psittacina: characteristics and benefits
The Sarracenia psittacina (Sarraceniaceae) is a botanical species from the southeastern United States: Georgia, northern Florida, Alabama, and Mississippi. It grows there in regularly flooded pine savannas. Its name comes from the Latin psittacus, the parrot, because of the rounded head of its pitchers. It is the only sarracenia whose trap works like a lobster pot: no lid or drop into a pit, but a narrow entrance, a corridor lined with inward-pointing hairs, and translucent windows that disorient the prey. When not flooded, it mainly captures ants and small crawling insects, guided by the wing running along each pitcher. When the marsh is flooded, the trap remains effective underwater: tadpoles and aquatic insects have been found in its pitchers. Its pitchers are generally 12 to 20 cm long.
Where to plant the Sarracenia psittacina? Exposure and hardiness
The Sarracenia psittacina loves full sun on a balcony or terrace, placed in a saucer of rainwater. Its small size makes it a foreground plant: at the edge of a mini-bog, in front of upright sarracenias, it forms a graphic carpet. For the location, take inspiration from our full-sun plants. However, it is the least hardy of our sarracenias: in regions with harsh winters, bring it inside for the winter in a cool, bright, frost-free room.
How to care for the Sarracenia psittacina?
Soil: blonde peat and non-calcareous sand or perlite.
Planting: wide and shallow pot, placed in a well-filled saucer.
Watering: rainwater or demineralized water, 2 to 3 cm in the saucer during the growing season.
Pruning: brown pitchers removed in spring.
Fertilizing: none, never use fertilizer or meat.
How does the Sarracenia psittacina catch its prey?
The Sarracenia psittacina attracts insects with nectar secreted around the entrance of its pitchers and along their wing. Once inside the mouth, the prey sees the light filtering through the white windows of the hood and heads toward it, believing it can escape. It exhausts itself against these walls, then slides into the tube, where hairs pointing toward the bottom prevent it from returning. It ends up in the lower part of the pitcher, where it is digested. This passive system requires no feeding on your part.
