About
Sarracenia purpurea venosa: the purple pitcher plant with squat, velvety pitchers
Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa is the southern form of the purple pitcher plant, a botanical species native to the coastal plain bogs from the Carolinas to eastern Georgia. It does not produce long trumpets: it forms a low rosette of squat, wide, and belly-shaped pitchers with wavy necks wide open to the sky. Their outer surface is covered in a fine fuzz, a distinctive feature of this subspecies, and a network of purple veins that gives it its name. Its open pitchers collect rainwater and drown the insects they attract.
Foliage: light green to reddish pitchers, densely veined with purple, evergreen.
Exposure: full sun, outdoors from spring to autumn.
Watering: rainwater or demineralized water only; saucer always filled during the growing season.
Pets: no known toxicity to cats and dogs.
Hardiness: one of the most cold-hardy pitcher plants; pot should be sheltered during prolonged freezes.
Packaging: 1 plant in a 12 cm pot, 20 cm tall upon delivery, without an outer pot.
A compact and robust carnivore, grown and shipped by our partner grower.

Everything you need to know about Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa - Purple pitcher plant, carnivorous plant - 12cm pot - Height 20cm
Is Sarracenia purpurea venosa toxic to cats and dogs?
Sarracenia purpurea venosa is not known to be toxic to cats or dogs. No toxicity data lists it as harmful, and the ASPCA classifies Darlingtonia, a carnivorous plant from the same family, as non-toxic. The water in its pitchers is not dangerous if a pet drinks it. The real risk is the plant itself: a cat scratching the peat or chewing on a pitcher will quickly damage it, so keep it out of reach.
How large does an adult Sarracenia purpurea venosa grow?
An adult Sarracenia purpurea venosa remains low: its rosette generally measures 15 to 30 cm high and slowly spreads over 20 to 30 cm. Its squat pitchers, 10 to 30 cm long, are semi-erect and wider than those of other sarracenias. Only the flower stalk, in spring, clearly exceeds it. The delivered plant measures 20 cm in a 12 cm pot and thickens year after year by forming new rosettes.
What is the difference between Sarracenia purpurea venosa and purpurea purpurea?
Sarracenia purpurea venosa can be distinguished from the purpurea subspecies by three traits. Its pitchers are shorter and more pot-bellied, with a wider, more wavy throat. Their outer surface is covered in a fine down, whereas it is smooth in the Northern form. Finally, it comes from the southeastern United States, from the Carolinas to Georgia, while the purpurea subspecies grows as far north as Canada and withstands even harsher winters.
Can Sarracenia purpurea venosa overwinter outdoors?
Yes, the Sarracenia purpurea venosa should even spend the winter outdoors: its cold dormancy from November to February is essential. Specialized nurseries give it a hardiness of around -15°C when planted in the ground. In a pot, the root ball freezes faster than the soil: place the pot near a wall, set it on an insulating support, or bury it in the garden during prolonged periods of frost. Then empty the saucer and keep the substrate just moist.
How to water a Sarracenia purpurea venosa in summer?
Water the Sarracenia purpurea venosa by pouring water onto its saucer, using only rainwater or demineralized water. In summer, keep 1 to 3 cm of water permanently under the pot and check every two days during periods of intense heat, as the sun quickly evaporates the supply. The growing medium must never dry out. There is no need to fill the pitchers by hand: the rain does it for you. Tap water or mineral water, which are too hard, will cause it to decline.
Why does my Sarracenia purpurea venosa stay completely green?
A Sarracenia purpurea venosa that remains green almost always lacks sunlight. Its purple veins and red highlights are pigments that the plant produces under strong, direct light. Behind glass or in partial shade, the pitchers remain pale green and flimsier. Gradually introduce it to full sun over the course of a week to prevent sunburn: the new pitchers will take on color throughout the summer.
When to repot or divide a Sarracenia purpurea venosa?
Sarracenia purpurea venosa should be repotted every 2 to 3 years, in February or March, just before the growing season begins. Use a wider plastic pot with drainage holes, as the rosette grows wider, and an unfertilized mix of blonde peat moss and non-calcareous sand or perlite. A clump that has formed several rosettes should be divided at this time: each division must retain a piece of rhizome and some roots. Water immediately with rainwater.
The essentials about Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa - Purple pitcher plant, carnivorous plant - 12cm pot - Height 20cm
Sarracenia purpurea venosa: characteristics and benefits
The Sarracenia purpurea venosa (Sarracenia purpurea subsp. venosa) belongs to the Sarraceniaceae family. It is a wild subspecies and not a hybrid: it grows naturally in the bogs and wet savannas of the coastal plain of the Carolinas and eastern Georgia. It differs from the northern purple pitcher plant (subsp. purpurea) by its shorter and wider pitchers, and especially by its fuzzy outer surface, while the northern form's pitchers are smooth. Its wide-open, flexible and wavy throat does not close: the pitcher functions like a small tank. Insects attracted by the nectar on the rim slide into the accumulated rainwater, where bacteria and enzymes break them down. In spring, adult plants bear a drooping purple flower at the end of a long stalk.
Where to plant the Sarracenia purpurea venosa? Exposure and hardiness
The Sarracenia purpurea venosa can be grown outdoors all year round, in full sun. Place its pot in a saucer on a well-exposed balcony or terrace, or gather several carnivorous plants in a hole-free planter filled with damp peat, like a mini-bog. It is one of the most surprising plants for balconies and terraces. Its low rosette is quite wind-resistant. In terms of cold, it is one of the hardiest pitcher plants: outdoor winter dormancy is essential for it, only the pot needs to be protected from prolonged frosts.
How to care for the Sarracenia purpurea venosa?
Soil: blonde peat and non-calcareous sand or perlite, poor and acidic.
Planting: wide plastic pot with drainage holes, placed in a saucer.
Watering: rainwater or demineralized water, 1 to 3 cm in the saucer from April to October.
Pruning: cut off dry pitchers at the end of winter.
Fertilization: none, never use fertilizer.
Should the water be emptied from the pitchers of the Sarracenia purpurea venosa?
No, the water that stagnates in the pitchers of the Sarracenia purpurea venosa is normal and useful. Unlike trumpet-shaped pitcher plants topped with an operculum, the purple pitcher plant keeps its pitcher open and collects rainwater. This small pool houses a microfauna of bacteria and larvae that help it digest its prey. If a pitcher overflows or lies down under the weight of the water, it is no problem: it will be replaced by new ones throughout the season. Just avoid pouring tap water into it.
